  • In this paper, we predicted the propagation loss for the air-to-ground (A2G) channel between the ground control system and the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) using the prediction model for the aircraft recommended by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). We analyzed the network coverage of the aerial relay system based on the medium altitude UAVs by expanding it into the air-to-air (A2A) channel. Climate and geographic factors in Korea were used to predict propagation loss due to atmospheres. We used the measured data published by the Telecommunication Technology Association (TTA) for regional rainfall-rate and effective earth radius factors to increase accuracy. In addition, the aerial relay communication system used the key parameter of the common data link (CDL) system developed in Korea recently. Prediction results show that the network coverage of the aerial relay system broadens at higher altitude.

  • Wind profiler provides vertical profiles of three-dimensional wind vectors with high spatiotemporal resolution. The wind vectors is useful to analyze severe weather phenomena and to validate the various products from numerical weather prediction model. However, the wind measurements are not immune to ground clutter, bird, insect, and aircraft. Therefore, quality of wind vectors from wind profiler must be quantitatively evaluated prior to its application. In this study, wind vectors from UHF wind profiler at Ganwon Regional Meteorological Administration was quantitatively evaluated using 27 radiosonde measurements that were launched every two or three hours according to rainfall intensity during Intensive Observation Period (IOP) from June to July 2013. In comparison between two measurements, wind vectors from wind profiler was relatively underestimated. In addition, the accuracy and quality of wind vectors from wind profiler decrease with increasing beam height. The accuracy and quality of the wind vectors for rainy periods during IOP were higher than for the clear-air measurements. The moderate rainfall intensity lead to multi-peaks in Doppler spectrum. It results in overestimation of vertical air motion, whereas wind vectors from wind profilers shows good agreement with those from radiosonde measurements for light rainfall intensity.

  • In Europe and USA, new programs called GRC(Green Rotorcraft) and SRW (Subsonic Rotary Wing program) respectively, have been currently underway for developing the next generation rotorcraft. The final goal is to develope fuel-efficient/environmental-friendly tilt-rotor civilian rotorcraft, which can partly replace short-range regional aircrafts. Also for safe operation, the new rotorcraft technology is cooperated with the new air transport management(ATM) system, called SESAR(Single European Sky ATM Research) and NextGen(Next Generation Air Transport System) in Europe and USA. In addition to achieve the final goal, the tilt-rotor aircraft, they are trying to improve the performance of conventional helicopters by adopting more efficient propulsion system, active rotor system, and reducing internal and external noise. Especially in GRC program of Europe, the environmental factors such as noise, fuel efficiency, reduction of emission gas(CO2, NOx), are focused for the new technologies.

  • In this paper, the activities carried out within the EU funded Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative (JTI GRA) Project and aimed at developing a morphing flap, are illustrated. The reference device is a regional aircraft single slotted flap, enhanced with deforming capabilities to obtain improved hyper-lift performance. The design started with the identification of the internal architecture, intended to allow camber variations. A concentrated-hinge architecture was selected, for its ability to fit different curvatures and for the possibility of easily realizing an "armadillo-like" configuration, then avoiding the use of a complicate deformable skin. The flap layout is made of segmented ribs, elastically hinged each other and span-wise connected by conventional spars. Relative rotations of the rib elements are forced by SMA structural actuators, i.e., cooperating in the external loads absorption. Super-elastic SMA are used to make up recovery elastic elements, necessary to regain the original shape after activation. These further elements in turn contribute to the overall flap rigidity. After assessing the hinge number and the size of the SMA active and passive elements, the advanced design phase was dealt with. It was aimed at solving manufacturing issues and producing the executive drawings. The realized demonstrator was finally tested in lab conditions to prove its functionality in terms of whether target shape actuation or attained shape preservation under loads. On the basis of the numerical results and the experimental outcomes, precious hints were obtained for further developments of the concept.

  • The world is currently confronted with regional conflicts among nations that seek to protect their territory. The associated counter-terrorism activities and international business flows can be increased through airworthiness-recognition tasks that are related to aircraft exports, dispatch troops, and overseas bases. It is important to establish airworthiness-recognition processes between foreign military authorities to minimize the potential for sovereign national positions and responsibilities. For this study, the military airworthiness recognition between recognition partners was surveyed to secure flight safety for the development and operation of aircrafts. The analysis of the U.S. and European Military Authority Recognition Questionsets (MARQs) in this paper introduces the rules, inspection capabilities, production process, and certification of the airworthiness authority. The regulatory activities, which are required by the Korea Military Airworthiness Authority (MAA) with respect to foreign MAAs, can be reduced by the implementation of the MARQ.

  • Koreans have emphasized education as the primary means to reconstruct our country means to reconstruct our country after two catastrophic events-the Japanese occupation and the Korean War(1950-1953). A Strong belief- in education coupled with sheer deter-mination spurred the period of industrial and eeonomic development that started in the early 1970-'s. The "can-do" attitude of the general public was matched and aided by small S & T communities. Scientists and engineers provided the neeessary expertise to manufacture goods and process the many raw materials imported from overseas. After nearly three decades of reconst-ructing our completely devastated country, Korea has become a modern, cosmo-politan, fast-paced and dynamic country. In order to further increaser our manufac- turing capabilities and double the per-capita income by the beginning of the 21st century, we must improve productivitiy and encourage creatitivity in all sectors of our country. The S & T community's efforts in research and development. education, and interna-tional cooperation will be invaluable in determining our direction and reaching these goals. The general public is eager to peacefully unite our foreign powers since 1945. Toward that end. members of the S & T community are willing to coope-rate with our north Korean counterparts in all areas of S & T with the exception of defense related endeavors. Establi-shing scientific ties with north Korea will result in mutual economic benefit and greater regional stability in East Asia. In particular. scientists and manu-facturers in each province are eager to initiate cordial and professional relation-ships with north Korea in the hopes of securing these benefits. The Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies(KOFST) has played an important role both in developing S & T policies, and in gostering the frowty of S & T societies. A non-governmental umbrella organization composed of over 251 professional societies, KOFST facili-tates the transfer of research outcomes and technology from research institutions to the various industries. KOFST also seeks to increase cooperation between the countries of the Pacific Rim. As evidence of that, we have pursued joint research and industrial ventures with China. Established projects include those on environmental conditions in the Yellow Sea, and improvement of aircraft manufacturing, telecommunica-tion equipment, and agricultural produ-cts. Increased cooperation between the Pacific Rim countries, particularly in S & T, would foster social and economic development for the region as a whole.
