In this paper, we propose a smoke detection method using region growing method in outdoor video sequences. Our proposed method is composed of three steps; the initial change area detection step, the boundary finding and expanding step, and the smoke classification step. In the first step, we use a background subtraction to detect changed areas in the current input frame against the background image. In difference images of the background subtraction, we calculate a binary image using a threshold value and apply morphology operations to the binary image to remove noises. In the second step, we find boundaries of the changed areas using labeling algorithm and expand the boundaries to their neighbors using the region growing algorithm. In the final step, ellipses of the boundaries are estimated using moments. We classify whether the boundary is smoke by using the temporal information.

In this study, flood records from 79 sites across Thailand were analyzed to estimate flood indices using the regional frequency analysis based on the L-moments method. Observation sites were grouped into homogeneous regions using k-means and Ward's clustering techniques. Among various distributions evaluated, the generalized extreme value distribution emerged as the most appropriate for certain regions. Regional growth curves were subsequently established for each delineated region. Furthermore, 20- and 100-year return values were derived to illustrate the recurrence intervals of maximum rainfall across Thailand. The predicted return values tend to increase at each site, which is associated with growth curves that could describe an increasing long-term predictive pattern. The findings of this study hold significant implications for water management strategies and the design of flood mitigation structures in the country.

It is important to extract salient object image and to solve the invariance problem for image recognition. In this paper we propose a new hybrid algorithm for invariance and improved classification performance in image recognition, whose algorithm is combined by FT(Frequency-tuned Salient Region Detection) algorithm, Guided filter, Zernike moments, and a simple artificial neural network (Multi-layer Perceptron). The conventional FT algorithm is used to extract initial salient object image, the guided filtering to preserve edge details, Zernike moments to solve invariance problem, and a classification to recognize the extracted image. For guided filtering, guided filter is used, and Multi-layer Perceptron which is a simple artificial neural networks is introduced for classification. Experimental results show that this algorithm can achieve a superior performance in the process of extracting salient object image and invariant moment feature. And the results show that the algorithm can also classifies the extracted object image with improved recognition rate.
This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation of the effect of geotextile reinforcement on underlying buried pipe behavior using PLAXIS 3D. In this study, variable parameters such as the in-plane stiffness of the geotextile, the pipe stiffness, the soil stiffness, the footing width, the geotextile width, and the location of the geotextile reinforcement layer are investigated. Deflections and bending moments acting on the pipe are evaluated for different combinations of variables and are presented graphically. It is observed that with an increase in the in-plane stiffness of the geotextile reinforcement, there is a tendency for a decrease in both deflections in the pipe and bending moments acting on the pipe. Conversely, with an increase in the pipe stiffness, geotextile reinforcement efficiency decreases. In the investigated region of soil stiffness, for the given pipe and geotextile stiffness, an optimum efficiency of geotextile is observed in medium dense soils. Further, it is shown that relative lengths of geotextile and footing has an important role on geotextile efficiency. Lastly, it is also demonstrated that relative location of geotextile layer with respect to the buried pipe plays an important role on the geotextile efficiency in reducing the bending moments acting on the pipe and deflections in the pipe. In general, geotextiles are more efficient in reducing the bending moments as opposed to reducing deflections of the pipe. Numerical validation is done with an experimental study from the literature to observe the applicability of the numerical model used.

This study is mainly conducted to derive the design drought rainfall by the consecutive duration using probability weighted moments with rainfall in the regional drought frequency analysis. It is anticipated to suggest optimal design drought rainfall of hydraulic structures for the water requirement and drought frequency of occurrence for the safety of water utilization through this study. Preferentially, this study was conducted to derive the optimal regionalization of the precipitation data that can be classified by the climatologically and geographically homogeneous regions all over the regions except Cheju and Ulreung islands in Korea. Five homogeneous regions in view of topographical and climatological aspects were accomplished by K-means clustering method. Using the L-moment ratio diagram and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, generalized extreme value distribution was confirmed as the best fitting one among applied distributions. At-site and regional parameters of the generalized extreme value distribution were estimated by the method of L-moments. Design drought rainfalls using L-moments following the consecutive duration were derived by the at-site and regional analysis using the observed and simulated data resulted from Monte Carlo techniques. Relative root-mean-square error (RRMSE), relative bias (RBIAS) and relative reduction (RR) in RRMSE for the design drought rainfall derived by at-site and regional analysis in the observed an simulated data were computed and compared. In has shown that the regional frequency analysis procedure can substantially more reduce the RRMSE. RBIAS and RR in RRMSE than those of at-site analysis in the prediction of design drought rainfall. Consequently, optimal design drought rainfalls following the regions and consecutive durations were derived by the regional frequency analysis.

Statistical and probabilistic behaviors of fibers forming fiber webs of all kinds are of great significance in the determination of the uniformity and physical properties of the webs commonly found in many industrial products such as filters, membranes and non-woven fabrics. However, in studying the spatial geometry of the webs the observations must be theoretically as well as experimentally confined within a specified unit area. This paper provides a general theory and framework for computer simulation for quantifying the fiber segments bounded by the unit area in consideration of the "edge effects" resulting from the truncated length segments within the boundary. The probability density function and the first and second moments of the length segments found within the counting region were derived by properly defining the seeding region and counting region.

We present a two step approach for estimating the motionand sturcture parameters from region orrespondences in two frames. Given four or more region corresondences on the same planar surface, the motion and planar orientation parameters are first linearly estimated based on second-order approximation of the displacement field of the image plane. Then, using this linear estimate as an initial guess, a nonlinear estimate is obtained by iteratively minimizing an objective function using the exact experession of the displacement field. The objective function involves the centroids of corresponding regions and relationships among low-order moments. Through simulations, we show that the two-step region-based approach gives robust estimates. The performance of nonlinear region-based estimation is compared with that of linear region-based and point-based methods. Experimental results for two image pairs, on esynthetic and one real, ar epresented to show the practical applicability of our approach.

As the availability of an image information has been significantly increasing, necessity of system that can manage an image information is increasing. Accordingly, we proposed the region-based content retrieval(CBIR) algorithm based on an efficient combination of an image segmentation, an image texture, a color feature and an image's shape and position information. As a color feature, a HSI color histogram is chosen which is known to measure spatial of colors well. We used active contour and CWT(complex wavelet transform) to perform an image segmentation and extracting an image texture. And shape and position information are obtained using Hu invariant moments in the luminance of HSI model. For efficient similarity computation, the extracted features(color histogram, Hu invariant moments, and complex wavelet transform) are combined and then precision and recall are measured. As a experimental result using DB that was supported by www.freefoto.com. the proposed image retrieval engine have 94.8% precision, 82.7% recall and can apply successfully image retrieval system.

A systematic procedure of probability analysis for general distributions is developed based on the first four moments estimated from polynomial interpolation of the system response function and the Pearson system. The function approximation is based on a specially selected experimental region for accuracy and the number of function evaluations is taken equal to that of the unknown coefficient for efficiency. For this purpose, three error-minimizing conditions are proposed and corresponding canonical experimental regions are formed for popular probability. This approach is applied to study the stochastic properties of the performance functions of a MEMS structure, which has quite large fabrication errors compared to other structures. Especially, the vibratory micro-gyroscope is studied using the statistical moments and probability density function (PDF) of the performance function to be the difference between resonant frequencies corresponding to sensing and driving mode. The results show that it is very sensitive to the fabrication errors and that the types of PDF of each variable also affect the stochastic properties of the performance function although they have same the mean and variance.

We present an image retrieval method for improving retrieval performance by effective fusion of entropy features in wavelet region and wavelet moments. In this method, entropy features are sensitive to the local variation of gray level and well extract valley and edges. These features are effectively applied to contend-based image retrieval by well fusing to wavelet moments that represent texture property in multi-resolution. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. We use Corel Draw Photo DB. Experiment results show that the proposed yields 11% better performance for Corel Draw Photo DB over wavelet moments method.
