Comparison of Condenser Characteristics Using R407C and R22 on the Same Inlet Temperature Condition (동일한 유입온도조건에서 R407C와 R22 적용 응축기의 특성비교)

  • R407C is considered as an alternative refrigerant to R22 for air conditioners. An experimental investigation was made to study the characteristics of the condensation heat transfer and pressure drop for R407C flowing in a fin-and-tube heat exchanger used for commercial air-conditioning units. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of inlet refrigerant temperature of 6$0^{\circ}C$ and refrigerant mass flux varying from 150 to 250 kg/$m^2$s for refrigerant side. The inlet air has dry bulb temperature of 35$^{\circ}C$ , relative humidity of 50% and air velocity varying from 0.8 to 1.6 m/s. Experiments show that air velocity increased by 25% is needed for R407C than that of R22 for subcooling temperature of 5$^{\circ}C$, which resulted in air-side pressure drop increase of 28.8% for R407C as compared to R22. As a consequence, in order to provide the same design condition of a condenser, the fan requires higher electric-power consumption with R407C than that with R22.

  • This paper presents the results of thermodynamic cycle analysis and performance tests of alternative mixtures in low temperature applications. Two near-azeotropic binary mixtures R-152a/R-1270 (35:65 by wt.%) and R-290/E170 (35:65 by wt.%) are considered in this study. They have zero ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) and much lower GWP (Global Warming Potential) than R-404A which is an alternative of R-502. Refrigeration cycle characteristics such as cooling capacity, coefficient of performance, suction and discharge pressures and temperatures are compared to those for the baseline refrigerants (R-502 and R-404A) cycles. The performance tests are conducted at the evaporation and condensation temperatures of $5^{\circ}C$ and $45^{\circ}C$, subcooling and superheating temperatures of $5^{\circ}C$, respectively. Performance comparisons between baseline and alternative refrigerants are conducted on the same cooling capacity. The system performance of newly proposed refrigerant mixtures show promising results.

  • In this study, a simulation program has been developed to predict the performance of a parallel flow condenser of an air conditioning system for an automobile. The well-known correlations for he heat transfer rates and the pressure drops are included in this model. It is fond that the numerical model can predict the heat transfer rate and the pressure drop accurately. As the condensing pressure increases of fixed air inlet temperature, the heat transfer rate increases and the pressure drop decreases. The effect of he degree of subcooling on the performance of the condenser is greater than that of the degree of super-heating because the ratio of the area occupied by he tow-phase refrigerant the total area is significantly affected by he degree of subcooling rather than the degree of superheating.

  • This study analyzed facts affecting the performance of refrigeration systems after throttling actions, by changing the amount of refrigerant according to adjusting the opening of manual expansion valve to 80%, or 20% with vapor compressional refrigeration training equipment. At opening of 20%, the inlet and outlet temperature of compressor, subcooling and superheat, condenser heat, refrigeration effect, flash gas heat, coefficient of performance were higher, while at 80%, condensing pressure, evaporating pressure, compression work were higher, Thus, we could see changes in the amount of refrigerant affect the performance of the refrigeration system.

  • Real quality and axial void fraction distribution of subcooled refrigerant flow is very important to predict the heat transfer rate and pressure drop in the design of refrigerating system. In the subcooled boiling region, the liquid bulk temperature is still below the corresponding saturation temperature. But beyond the net vapor generation point, bubble detachment is occured actively from the vapor layer formed on the wall. A reliable method to predict the vapor fraction from the liquid bulk temperature is suggested in this paper. And also the actual quality of the subcooled R-113 flow is calculated in the range of 261-1239kg/$m^2$s mass velocity and 10-30K subcooling.

Investigation on the Selection of Capillary Tube for the Alternative Refrigerant R-407C

  • The capillary tube performance for R-407C is experimentally investigated. The experimental setup is a real vapor-compression refrigerating system. Mass flow rate is measured for various diameter and length while inlet pressure and degree of subcooling are changed. These data are compared with the results of a numerical model. The mass flow rate of the numerical model is about 14% less than the measured mass flow rate. It is found that mass flow rate and length for R-407C are less than those for R-22 under the same condition. Based on this experimental study and the numerical model, a set of design charts for capillary tube of R-407C is proposed.

  • An experimental study on condensation heat transfer characteristics of helically coiled spiral tubes was performed. The refrigerant is R-113. A refrigerant loop was established to measure the condensation heat transfer coefficients. Experiments were carried out uniform heat flux of 15 kw/m$^2$, refrigerant quality of 0.1∼0.9, curvature ratio of 0.016, 0.025 and 0.045. The curvature of a coil was defined as the ratio of the inside diameter of the tube to the diameter of the bending circle. To compare the condensation heat transfer coefficients of coiled spiral tubes, the previous results on coiled plain tubes and straight plain tubes were used. The results shows that the condensation heat transfer coefficients of coiled spiral tubes largely increase, as increasing Re and quality, compared to those of coiled plain tubes and straight plain tubes. As increasing degree of subcooling, however, the condensation heat transfer coefficients on coiled spiral tubes decrease. It is found that the heat transfer enhancement is more better than coiled plain tubes and straight plain tubes, as increasing curvature ratio.

Condensation heat transfer characteristics of alternative refrigerants for CFC-11, CFC-12 for enhanced tubes (열전달 촉진관에서 CFC-11 및 CFC-12 대체냉매의 응축 열전달 특성 연구)

  • In this study, condensation heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of a plain tube, low fin tube, and Turbo-C enhanced tube for CFC-11, HCFC-123, CFC-12, HFC-l34a are measured and compared against each other. All data are taken at the vapor temperature of 39$^{\circ}C$ with a wall subcooling temperature 3~8$^{\circ}C$. Test results show that HTCs of a low vapor pressure refrigerant, HFC-123, for a plain, low fin, and Turbo-C tubes are 10.5~20.5%, 8.2~12.2%, 16.5~19.2% lower than those of CFC-11, respectively. On the other hand, HTCs of a medium vapor refrigerant, HFC-l34a, for a plain, low fin, and Turbo-C tubes are 20.6~31.8%, 0.0~8.0%, 13.2~20.9% higher than those of CFC-12, respectively. For all refrigerants tested, HTCs of Turbo-C tube are the highest among the three tubes showing almost 8 times increase in HTCs as compared to those of a plain tube. Nusselt's prediction equation for a plain tube yielded 12% deviation for all plain tube data while Realty and Katz's prediction equation for a low fin tube yielded 20% deviation for all low tube data.

  • The important problems from the point of view of preventing global warming are to save the power consumption of automotive air-conditioning systems and reduce the refrigerant amount filled. To achieve such requirements, integral receiver/dryer (R/D) condensers were developed recently. Typical integral R/D condensers have extra headers that play the role of R/D. Except an extra header and somewhat complex tube array resulting from the extra header, the most integral R/D condensers have almost the same specification that tube has multi channels, fin has louvers, flow in tube is parallel, etc. When integral condensers are applied, it is known that the refrigerating effect increases, resulting from the increase of subcooling degree in condenser, and the refrigerant amount used saves. In spite of several merits, integral condensers have not been applied a lot. That is why there is an uncertainty in performance, using integral condensers. The objective of this study is to theoretically optimize the tube array in an integral R/D condenser that is really being applied to some vehicles. The tube array has a great effect on the performance of the integral condenser as well as common ones. Through computer simulation, we could see that the tube array, 14-6-3-5-3-4, in the same condenser was the best, comparing heat release rate, pressure drop, etc. to the real array, 17-5-3-3-2-5. It should be noted that the optimization is based on the condenser performance only.

Performance Analysis of a Seawater Ice Machine Applied Two-stage vapor compression refrigeration system for Various Refrigerants (2단 증기 압축식 냉동시스템을 적용한 해상용 제빙장치의 냉매에 따른 성능 분석)

  • Coefficient of performance (COP) for two-stage compression system is investigated in this paper to develop seawater ice machine. The system performance is analyzed with respect to degrees of superheating and subcooling, condensing and evaporating temperatures, compression and mechanical efficiencies and mass flow ratio in an inter-cooler. The main results are summarized as follows : The COP of the system grows when the mass flow ratio, subcooling degree and evaporating temperature edge up. Contrariwise, the system performance descends in case that superheating degree and condensing temperature increase. The most effective factor for the COP is the mass flow rate ratio. Each refrigerant has different limitation for a value of the mass flow ratio in the inter-cooler because of difference in material property.
