  • In this study, optical and mechanical properties were investigated with 4 kinds of commercial dental enamels. As a result of EDS analysis $SiO_2,\;Na_{2}O,\;Al_{2}O_3\;and\;K_{2}O$ were the main components of commercial dental enamels. In case of H specimen, content of $SiO_2\;and\;K_2O$ were more than that of another specimens. Starting powder and fired specimens were glass ceramics which were consist of amorphous phase and leucite (crystalline) phase. Crystallization did not occurred during firing process, since the XRD peak intensity was similar between starting powder and fired specimens. As a result of differential thermal analysis, $T_g$ and crystalline temperature was varied with composition in the range of $548\sim576^{\circ}C$ and $735\sim780^{\circ}C$ respectively. 0.5mm thickness dental enamel specimens showed sufficient translucent properties. However, transmittance and reflectance were lower than 5% result from scattering due to the refractive index difference between glass and crystalline phase. 3 point bending strength was in the range of 73.9$\sim$101.8MPa which was similar or slightly higher than enamel of natural teeth and Vickers hardness was higher than enamel of natural teeth more than 100.

  • Clinical evaluation of the Closed-view autorefractor and Open-view autorefractor was performed to examine validity and repeatability compared with subjective refraction. Measurements of refractive error were performed on 126 eyes of 65 subjects (aged $26{\pm}7.5$ years) subjectively noncycloplegic. Intersession repeatability of the Closed-view and Open-view were also assessed on all 65 subjects together with Intersession repeatability on 7 to 14 days intervals. Spherical powers and spherical equivalent values of subjective refraction and autorefractions by Closed-view and Open-view were analyzed by paired T-test. The mean spherical powers of subjective refraction, Closed-view and Open-view were determined to be $-2.125{\pm}2.155D$, $-2.146{\pm}1.907D$, $-2.117{\pm}2.121D$, respectively. The mean spherical equivalent values of subjective refraction, Closed-view and Open-view were determined to be $-2.362{\pm}2.204D$, $-2.391{\pm}1.967D$, $-2.366{\pm}2.162D$, respectively. The results showed that the refractive errors as measured by the Closed-view and Open-view were found to be similar to the subjective refraction in all components.

  • In this study we suggest a humidity-sensitive color sensor using a one-dimensional photonic crystal and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology-1 (HKUST-1), which is a metal-organic framework (MOF) substance. One-dimensional photonic crystals have a photonic band gap, due to a periodic refractive-index change, and block and reflect light components in a specific wavelength band. The refractive index of HKUST-1 differs in dry and humid environments. Herein we designed a sensor using the presence of the photonic band gap, with FDTD simulation. As a result of optical analysis, the color conversion of the reflected light was superior to the color conversion of the transmitted light. When the center wavelength of the photonic band gap was 550 nm, the maximum peak value of the wet environment increased by a factor of about 9.5 compared to the dry environment, and the color conversion from achromatic to green was excellent as a sensor. The results of this study suggest the application of MOF materials to moisture sensors, and the nanostructure design of MOF materials will expand the applications to industrial devices.

  • N-RTK(Network based RTK) methods are able to improve the accuracy of GNSS positioning results through modelling of the distance-dependent error sources(i.e. primarily the ionospheric and tropospheric delays and orbit errors). In this study, the comparison of the TTFF(Time-To-Fix-First ambiguity), accuracy and discrepancies in horizontal/vertical components of N-RTK methods(VRS and FKP) with the static GNSS at 20 Unified Control Stations covering Incheon metropolitan city area during solar storms(Solar cycle 24 period) were performed. The results showed that the best method, compared with the statics GNSS survey, is the VRS, followed by the FKP, but vertical components of both VRS and FKP were approximately two times bigger than horizontal components. The reason for this is considered as the ionospheric scintillation because of irregularities in electron density, and the tropospheric scintillation because of fluctuations on the refractive index take the place. When the TTFF at each station for each technique used, VRS gave shorter initialization time than FKP. The possible reasons for this result might be the inherent differences in principles, errors in characteristics of different correction networks, interpolating errors of FKP parameters according to the non-linear variation of the dispersive and non-dispersive errors at rover when considering both domestic mobile communication infra and the standardized high-compact data format for N-RTK. Also, those test results revealed degradation of positing accuracy, long initialization time, and sudden re-initialization, but more failures to resolve ambiguity during space weather events caused by Sunspot activity and solar flares.

  • The glass of $BaO-GeO_2-La_2O_3-ZnO$ system with a transmittance of more than 75 % at mid-wave infrared (MWIR) region in the range of $3{\mu}m$ to $5{\mu}m$ is manufactured and its property is evaluated. After selecting construction that can melt glass through flow button test, $BaO-GeO_2-La_2O_3$ system where 10 mol%, 20 mol% of ZnO were added respectively were melted at $1350^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour and $BaO-GeO_2-La_2O_3$ system of glass was manufactured. Among them, with 20 mol% of ZnO, 16 mol% BaO-56 mol% $GeO_2-8mol%$ $La_2O_3-16mol%$ ZnO system of glass was found to has less than $660^{\circ}C$ of glass transition temperature, more than 1.70 of refractive index, and more than 530 of knoop hardness. Therefore, it is concluded that glass of $BaO-GeO_2-La_2O_3-ZnO$ system of glass with 20 mol% ZnO has good melting conditions at low temperatures and excellent optical properties, thus, can be utilized for special optical materials field.

  • In this study, the performance between subjective refraction and open-field/closed view autorefraction was estimated. We measured the refractive error of early adults aged 18 to 20 years who did not have eye disease. The differences between measurements obtained by subjective refraction and open-field autorefraction for SE, J0, and J45 were $-0.13{\pm}0.53D$ (p=0.17), $+0.33{\pm}0.68D$ (p=0.01), and $+0.13{\pm}0.68D$ (p=0.26), respectively, with only J0 differing significantly. The differences between the measurements of subjective refraction and closed-view autorefraction for SE, J0, and J45 were $-0.30{\pm}0.42D$ (p=0.00), $+0.30{\pm}0.71D$ (p=0.02), and $-0.02{\pm}0.63D$ (p=0.88), respectively, with only SE and J0 differing significantly. The coefficient of accuracy for SE, J0, and J45 components of open-field and closed-view autorefraction were 1.04, 1.33, and 1.34 and 0.83, 1.40, and 1.24, respectively. It is possible to predict the refractive error, which is necessary when deciding on subjective refraction, by measuring the objective refraction of open-field/closed view autorefractors.

  • Quantitative analysis is an important requirement in exploration, mining and processing of minerals. There is an increasing need for the use of quantitative mineralogical data to assist with bore hole logging, deposit delineation, grade control, feed to processing plants and monitoring of solid process residues. Quantitative analysis using X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) requires fine grinding and the addition of a reference material, or the application of Rietveld analysis to XRD patterns to provide accurate analysis of the suite of minerals present. Whilst accurate quantitative data can be obtained in this manner, the method is time consuming and limited to the laboratory. Mid infrared when combined with multivariant analysis has also been used for quantitative analysis. However, factors such as the absorption coefficients and refractive index of the minerals requires special sample preparation and dilution in a dispersive medium, such as KBr to minimize distortion of spectral features. In contrast, the lower intensity of the overtones and combinations of the fundamental vibrations in the near infrared allow direct measurement of virtually any solid without special sample preparation or dilution. Thus Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR) has found application for quantitative on-line/in line analysis and control in a range of processing applications which include, moisture control in clay and textile processing, fermentation processes, wheat analysis, gasoline analysis and chemicals and polymers. It is developing rapidly in the mineral exploration industry and has been underpinned by the development of portable NIR spectrometers and spectral libraries of a wide range of minerals. For example, iron ores have been identified and characterized in terms of the individual mineral components using field spectrometers. Data acquisition time of NIR field instruments is of the order of seconds and sample preparation is minimal. Consequently these types of spectrometers have great potential for in-line or on-line application in the minerals industry. To demonstrate the applicability of NIR field spectroscopy for quantitative analysis of minerals, a specific example on the quantification of lateritic bauxites will be presented. It has been shown that the application of Partial Least Squares regression analysis (PLS) to the NIR spectra can be used to quantify chemistry and mineralogy in a range of lateritic bauxites. Important, issues such as sampling, precision, repeatability, and replication which influence the results will be discussed.
