  • 반사형 STN-LCD (supertwisted nematic liquid crystal display) 는 많은 display에서 사용되고 있는 LCD mode 중의 하나이다. 그러나 현재 많이 사용되는 반사형 STN-LCD는 그림 1과 같이 한 장의 polarizer와 두장의 retardation film을 사용하는 구조이므로 각각의 component에 대한 parameter들에 의해 display의 표시 성능이 좌우된다. 먼저 Reflective STN-LCD의 보상에 필요한 parameter를 살펴보면, 그림 1과 같이 5개 ( $\alpha$, ø$_1$, ø$_2$, 각 retarder의 retardation : Δnd$_1$, Δnd$_2$)의 parameter의 결정이 필요하다.   • A novel single cell gap transflective liquid crystal display was developed. By using the ink jet printing technology, we fabricated a transflective liquid crystal display with the hybrid alignment in the reflective region and the homogeneous alignment in the transmission region. Compared with the traditional technologies, our technology provided the advantages of easy process, high yield, fast throughput, and less material usage. We also applied this technology to the 2.4 inch prototype. This panel could be implemented in the handheld product applications.

  • Bistable chiral splay nematic liquid crystal display (BCSN LCD) is a memory type liquid crystal display using splay and $-\pi$ twist states as two stable states. When the cell thickness to pitch (d/p) ratio is 0.25, splay and $-\pi$ twist states have permanent memory time. However, when the transition from $-\pi$ twist state to splay state is caused by a fringe field, pixel regions show that the splay state is not perfect, but rather includes a contribution from the $-\pi$ twist state. In this paper, we propose a reflective BCSN LCD using $-\pi$ twist state in which the two stable states do not coexist. The fabricated reflective BCSN LC cell shows a high contrast ratio of over 30:1 and response times of 950 ms and 450 ms in vertical and fringe field switching, respectively. The proposed cell also shows wide viewing angle characteristics of $180^{\circ}$ in left- and right directions.

  • A development of low power display is an important problem from a point of reduction in worldwide energy consumption. In this research, we aimed to achieve a high quality and low power paper-like reflective full-color display and investigated the design rules for the light diffusing film, LC-cell structure, front lighting systems based on the diffused light control technology. As a result, we successfully obtained the high quality reflective liquid crystal display with a high reflectivity, a wide color gamut and a high motion picture quality.

  • A replica-molding method of fabricating a dual-gap substrate for transflective liquid crystal (LC) displays is demonstrated. The dual-gap substrate provides homeotropic alignment for the LC molecules without any surface treatment and embedded bilevel microstructure on one of the two surfaces to maintain different cell gaps between the transmissive and reflective subpixels. The proposed transflective LC cell shows no electro-optic disparity between two subpixels and reduces the panel thickness and weight by 30% compared to the conventional transflective LC cell, which has two glass substrates.

  • We propose an optical configuration for a transflective display mode using a transflective film and a half-wave AFLC cell whose in-plane tilt angle is 22.5。. It provides high brightness and high contrast in the reflective mode as well as in the transmissive mode.

  • The structure of the prism sheet and the reflective polarizer sheet in the direct - illumination liquid crystal display (LCD) backlight is optimized and fabricated. The apex angle of the prism sheet was changed from 90 degree to 96.5 and 101.5 degree and the angular spread of the diffuser films attached on the reflective polarizer sheet was changed from 7 to 1.5 degrees. The measured view angle, the normal luminance, and the contrast ratio from the optimized backlight unit showed improved optical performances.

  • We present the results of a study of the polarizing photovoltaic (PV) effects in an aligned polymer bulk heterojuction PV layer. The fairly uniform in-plane uniaxial alignment of the PV layer with a macroscopic axial orientational order parameter of 0.40 was achieved by means of a simple rubbing technique. Moreover, reflective polarizing PSCs having the aligned PV layers were applied to power-generating reflective type liquid crystal displays (LCDs), which exhibited a maximum contrast ratio of 1.7. These results form a promising foundation for various energy harvesting polarization dependent opto-electrical LCD device applications.
