  • This study examined the growth and fruiting characteristics and the acorns biomass allometric equation of Quercus acuta to provide reference data related to the growth and seed supply during the restoration of evergreen forest in the warm temperate zone in Wando Island, Korea. For the growth survey, we selected and cut three sample trees having a mean diameter at breast height (DBH) to investigate the growth analysis through a stem analysis. We then developed the allometric equation (Y=aX+b) of DBH and tree height growth characteristic (Y) according to the average tree age (X) of sampled trees and estimated the DBH and tree height according to the age of Quercus acuta. For the fruiting survey, we selected and cut three sample trees with full fruit in August when, they are at the early mature fruiting stage, for the analysis. To develop the acorns/tree biomass allometric equation of Quercus acuta, we selected and cut ten sample trees of evenly divided diameters. The acorns biomass allometric equation ($Y=aX^b$) was derived by analyzing the biomass (Y) and the growth characteristics (X), such as the DBH, tree height, crown width, and crown height. The allometric equations of average tree age according to DBH and tree height were Y=0506X-2.064 ($R^2=0.999$) and Y=0.321X+0689 ($R^2=0.992$), respectively. The developed allometric equations estimated that the DBH were 3.0cm, 8.1cm, 13.1cm and 18.2cm while the tree heights were 3.9m, 7.1m, 10.3m, and 13.5m when the tree ages were 10, 20, 30, and 40 years, respectively. The analysis results of fruiting characteristics showed that the length, the diameter, the number of fruits, and the number of acorns per fruiting branch had the statistically significant difference and tended to decrease from the upper part to the lower part of crown downward. The total number of acorns was 1,312 acorns/tree in the upper part, 115 acorns/tree in the middle part, and 5 acorns/tree in the lower part of the crown. The allometric equation for the amount of acorns with DBH as an independent variable was $Y=0.003X^{4.260}$ with the coefficient of determination at 0.896. Although the coefficient of determination of the allometric equation using only DBH as the independent variable was lower than that using DBH and tree height ($D^2H$), it would be more practical to consider only DBH as the independent variable because of measurement errors.

  • Background: Although graded exercise stress tests are widely used for the evaluation of cardiorespiratory performance, normal standards on respiratory gas exchange and ventilatory functions at maximal exercise in Koreans have not been well established. The purpose of this study is to provide reference values on these by sex and age, along with derivation of some of their prediction equations. Method: Symptom-limited maximal exercise test was carried out by Bruce protocol in 1,000 healthy adults consisting of 603 males and 397 females, aged 20~66 years. Among them VC, $FEV_1$ and MVV were also determined in 885 cases. All the subjects were members of a health center, excluding athletes. During the exercise, subjects were allowed to hold on to front hand rail of the treadmill for safety purpose. Results: The $VO_2\;max/m^2$, $VCO_2\;max/m^2$ and $V_E\;max/m^2$ were greater in males than in females and decreased with age. The RR max in men and women was similar but decreased slightly with age. The $V_T$ max was markedly greater in men but showed no significant changes with age in either gender. The mean of $V_T$ max/VC, $V_E$ max/MVV and BR revealed that there were considerable ventilatory reserves at maximal exercise even in older females. The regression equations of the cardinal parameters obtained using exercise time(ET, min), age(A, yr), height(Ht, cm), weight(W, kg), sex(S, 0=male; 1=female), VC(L), $FEV_1$(L) and $V_E$ max(L) as variables are as follows: $VO_2\;max/m^2$(L/min)=1.449+0.073 ET-0.007A+0.010W-0.006Ht-0.209S, $VCO_2\;max/m^2$(L/min)=1.672+0.063ET-0.008A+0.010W-0.005Ht-0.319S, VE max/$m^2$(L/min)=58.161+1.503ET-0.315A-9.871S or VE max/$m^2$(L/min)=47.873+6.548 $FEV_1$-5.715 S, and VT max(L)=1.497+0.223VC-0.493S. Conclusion: Respiratory gas exchange and ventilatory variables at maximal exercise were studied in 1,000 non-athletes by Bruce protocol. During exercise, the subjects were allowed to hold on to hand rail of the treadmill for safety purpose. We feel that our results would provide ideal target values for patients and healthy individuals to be achieved, since our study subjects were members of a health center whose physical fitness levels were presumably higher than ordinary population.

  • Purpose : To assess the methods for the clinical evaluation of the longitudinal bone changes after implantation of tooth ash-plaster mixture into the defect area of human jaws. Materials and methods : Tooth ash-plaster mixtures were implanted into the defects of 8 human jaws. 48 intraoral radiograms taken with copper step wedge as reference at soon, 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th week after implantation of mixture were used. X-ray taking was standardized by using Rinn XCP device customized directly to the individual dentition with resin bite block. The images inputted by Quick scanner were digitized and analyzed by NIH image program. Cuequivalent values were measured at the implanted sites from the periodic digital images. Analysis was performed by the bidirectional subtraction with color enhancement and the surface plot of resliced contiguous image. The obtained results by the two methods were compared with Cuequivalent value changes. Results : The average determination coefficient of Cu-equivalent equations was 0.9988 and the coefficient of variation of measured Cu values ranged from 0.08~0.10. The coefficient of variation of Cu-equivalent values measured at the areas of the mixture and the bone by the conversion equation ranged from 0.06 ~0.09. The analyzed results by the bidirectional subtraction with color enhancement were coincident with the changes of Cu-equivalent values. The surface plot of the resliced contiguous image showed the three dimensional view of the longitudinal bone changes on one image and also coincident with Cu-equivalent value changes after implantation. Conclusion : The bidirectional subtraction with color enhancement and the surface plot of the resliced contiguous image was very effective and reasonable to analyze clinically and qualitatively the longitudinal bone change. These methods are expected to be applicable to the non-destructive test in other fields.

  • This study aimed to clarify the influencing site factors of the mesopore ratio on a pore geometry of surface soil in deciduous stands as an index of the water retention capacity. Fifteen factors including site conditions and soil properties were analyzed by spss/pc+ for the data collected during March to October of 1994. The factors influencing the mesopore ratio(pF2.7) on the surface soil were as follows; tree height, under vegetation coverage and organic matter contents of soil. And influencing factor on the ratio of mesopore in the soil surface was correlated with surface soil hardness shows high negative significance. Also, multiple regression equations for mesopore ratios of surface soil hardness, organic matter contents of soils show high significance($R^2=0.84$). In deciduous stands, it is effective in promoting development on the ratio of mesopore that forest practice for enhancing of the water resource retention capacity should be carried out when the under vegetation coverage rates of stands are maintained from 30 to 80 percentages.

  • Third-order shear deformation theory is reformulated using the nonlocal elasticity of Eringen. The equation of equilibrium of the nonlocal elasticity are derived. This theory has ability to capture the both small scale effects and quadratic variation of shear strain through the plate thickness. Navier's method has been used to solve the governing equations for all edges simply supported boundary conditions. Analytical solutions of buckling of nano-scale plates are presented using this theory to illustrate the effect of nonlocal theory on buckling load of the nano-scale plates. The relations between nonlocal third-order and local theories are discussed by numerical results. Further, effects of (i) length (ii) nonlocal parameter, (iii) aspect ratio and (iv) mode number on nondimensional buckling load are studied. In order to validate the present solutions, the reference solutions are used and discussed. The present results of nano-scale plates using the nonlocal theory can provide a useful benchmark to check the accuracy of related numerical solutions.

  • This study focuses on the modeling of DMFC to predict the characteristics and to improve its performance. This modeling requires deep understanding of the design and operating parameters that influence on the cell potential. Furthermore, the knowledge with reference to electrochemistry, transport phenomena and fluid dynamics should be employed for the duration of mathematical description of the given process. Considering the fact that MEA is the nucleus of DMFC, special attention was made to the development of mathematical model of MEA. Multiscale modeling is comprised of process modeling as well as a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. The CFD packages and process simulation tools are used in simulating the steady-state process. The process simulation tool calculates theelectrochemical kinetics as well as the change of fractions, and at the same time, CFD calculates various balance equations. The integrated simulation with multiscal modeling explains experimental observations of transparent DMFC.

  • The organic materials included in excreta of livestock are important resources for organic manure and for improving soil quality, although there is still far from effective using. One reason for this is still unclearly standard of quality for evaluation of manure made from excreta of livestock. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop rapid and accurate analytical method for analyzing organic compositions of manure made from excreta of livestock, and to establish quality evaluation method based on the compositions predicted by near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS). Sixteen samples of manure, each eight samples prepared from two treatments, were used in this study. The manure samples were prepared by mixing 560 kg feces of swine,60 kg sawdust with moisture content was adjusted to be 65%. The mixture was then keep under two kinds of shelter, black and clear sheets, as a treatment on the effect of sunlight. Samples were taken in every week (form week-0 to 7) during the process of manure making. Samples were analyzed to determine neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and acid detergent lignin (ADL) by detergent methods, and organic cell wall (OCW) and fibrous content of low digestibility in OCW (Ob) by enzymatic methods. Biological oxygen demand (BOD) was analyzed by coulometric respirometer method. These compositions were carbohydrateds and lignin that were hardly digested. Spectra of samples were scanned by NIR instrument model 6500 (Pacific Scientific) and read over the range of wavelength between 400 and 2500nm. Calibration equations were developed using eight manure samples collected from black sheet shelter, while prediction was conducted to the other eight samples from clear sheet shelter. Accuracy of NTRS prediction was evaluated by correlation coefficients (r), standard error of prediction (SEP) and ration of standard deviation of reference data in prediction sample set to SEP (RPD). The r, SEP and RPD value of forage were 0.99, 0.69 and 7.6 for ADL, 0.96, 1.03 and 4.1 for NDF, 0.98, 0.60 and 4.9 for ADF, 0.92, 1.24 and 2.6 for Ob, and 0.91, 1.02 and 7.3 for BOD, respectively. The results indicated that NIRS could be used to measure the organic composition of forage used in manure samples.

  • An analytical solution to generate attitude command profile for agile spacecraft is proposed. In realistic environment, obtaining analytical minimum-time optimal solution is very difficult because of following constraints-: 1) actuator saturation, 2) flexible mode excitation, 3) uplink command bandwidth limit. For that reasons, this paper applies two simplifications, an eigen-axis rotation and a finite-jerk approximated profile, to derive the solution in an analytical manner. The resulting attitude profile can be used as a feedforward or reference input to on-board attitude controller, and it can enhance spacecraft agility. Equations of attitude command profile are derived in two general boundary conditions: rest-to-rest maneuver and spin-to-spin maneuver. Simulation results demonstrate that the initial and final boundary conditions, in terms of time, attitude, and angular velocities, are well satisfied with the proposed analytical solution. The derived attitude command generation algorithm may be used to minimize a number of parameters to be uploaded to spacecraft or to automate a sequence of attitude command generation on-board.

  • The initial conditions that generate bounded motion in eccentric reference orbit are determined for satellite formation flying. Because Hill's equations cannot describe the relative motion between two satellites in eccentric orbit, a new relative dynamics utilizing the nonlinearity and eccentricity correction for Hill's initial conditions is implemented. The constraint that matches angular rates of chief and deputy satellites is used to obtain the bounded motion between them. The constraint can be applied to satellite formation motions in eccentric orbit, since it implicates J2 perturbation due to the central body's aspherical gravitational forces. The periodic bounded motions are analyzed for the orbit with the eccentricity of less than 0.05 and about 0.5 km relative distance between chief and deputy satellites. It is mainly illustrated that the satellite formations in small eccentric orbits can have hounded motions; consequently, the formation can be kept by matching angular rates of the satellites. These results demonstrate an useful method that reduces the cost for operating satellites by providing effective initial conditions for satellite formation flying in eccentric orbit.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of customer relationship management (CRM) support policies for facilitating traditional markets, especially with respect to customer acquisition and maintenance, and to investigate the factors affecting CRM. Research design, data, and methodology - We analyzed the CRM efficiency of traditional markets in 16 cities and provinces in Korea on the basis of DEA analysis and Malmquist productivity analysis. The DEA model calculates a ratio of the weighted mean of various inputs to the weighted mean of various outputs and measures the efficiency of a specific decision making unit (DMU), which is compared to the reference group that has a similar input-output structure. The input variables are coupon, event, parcel service, premiums, while is the number of customers per day. Further, through regression analysis, we analyzed CRM-related factors affecting traditional markets' customer appeal and revenue growth. Results - We obtained the results of the efficiency of traditional markets in 16 provinces. The traditional markets in Seoul, Busan, and Jeju were found to be efficient in a model CCR that used the number of customers per day as an output variable, while Chungbuk, Jeonbuk Province, and According to the results of the DEA analysis and Malmquist productivity analysis, large cities such as Seoul, Busan, and Jeju showed efficiency in CRM-related investment businesses in traditional markets for attracting customers. The Malmquist analysis results confirmed that the productivity of traditional markets increased from 2008 to 2010. The results of the regression analysis revealed that the "customer acquisition/maintenance factor" and the "offering of customer convenience facility factor" were significant to the daily average number of customers, which is a dependent variable. The results of the test with the mediating variable, "number of customers," and the final dependent variable, "sales revenue," were rejected. However, the variable "customer acquisition /maintenance" was found to affect sales revenue positively. Conclusions - It is necessary to enhance the business not only for promotional activities to attract customers, but also to strengthen customer relationships among CRM businesses, such as through the management of key customers. The regression analysis results showed that CRM businesses have yet to produce an increase in sales revenues in traditional markets. Therefore, to help customers who visit traditional markets to keep buying products, it is necessary to prepare various investment methods and provide support to improve "customer loyalty." This study has a limitation in terms of CRM-related statistics. Therefore, in the future, it is necessary to conduct a survey of customers who use traditional markets to analyze the markets by type and size as well as the CRM-related factors. Based on the analysis, we will try to perform a variety of statistical analyses, including structural equations.
