  • With increasing complexity of digital logic circuits, fast and accurate verification of functional behaviour becomes most critical bottleneck in meeting time-to-market requirement. This paper presents several techniques for accelerating a cycle-based logic simulation. The acceleration techniques include parallel pattern logic evaluation, circuit size reduction, and the partition of feedback loops in sequential circuits. Among all, the circuit size reduction plays a critical role in maximizing logic simulation speedup by reducing 50% of entire circuit nodes on the average. These techniques are incorporated into a levelized table-driven logic simulation system rather than a compiled-code simulation algorithm. Finally, experimental results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed acceleration techniques. Experimental results show more than 27 times performance improvement over single pattern levelized logic simulation.

  • In this paper, the application of genetic algorithms (GAs) for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction is investigated. A GA is applied in order to enhance the performance of some known techniques for OFDM PAPR reduction and the potential benefits are analyzed. Using the proposed techniques, the system designer can take advantage of the GA versatility, robustness, and adaptability to specific system requirements, in order to achieve a convenient trade-off between effectiveness and computational burden.

  • This paper presents Variance Reduction Techniques of the Monte Carlo Simulation considering Non-Exponential Distribution for Power System Reliability Evaluation. Generally, the components consisting of power system are assumed to be exponentially distributed in their state residence time. Sometimes, however, this assumption may cause a lot of errors in the reliability index evaluation. Non-exponential distribution can be approximated by a sum of several Erlangian distributions, whose inverse transform is easily calculated by using composition method. This paper proposes a new approach to deal with the non-exponential distribution and to reduce the simulation time by virtue of Variance Reduction Techniques such as Control Variate and Antithetic Variate.

  • Air lubrication techniques for frictional drag reduction on ships have been proposed by numerous researchers since the 19th century. However, these techniques have not been widely adopted as questions persist about their drag reduction performance beyond the laboratory, as well as energy and economic cost-benefit. This paper draws on data from the literature to consider the suitability of air lubrication for large ocean going and U.S. Great Lakes ships, by establishing the basic energy economic calculations and presenting results for a hypothetical air lubricated ship. All the assumptions made in the course of the analysis are clearly stated so that they can be refined when considering application of air lubrication to a specific ship. The analysis suggests that, if successfully implemented, both air layer and partial cavity drag reduction could lead to net energy savings of 10 to 20%, with corresponding reductions in emissions.

  • Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiplexing is an attractive technology that increases the channel capacity without requiring additional spectral resources. The design of low complexity and high performance detection algorithms capable of accurately demultiplexing the transmitted signals is challenging. In this technical survey, we introduce the state-of-the-art MIMO detection techniques. These techniques are divided into three categories, viz. linear detection (LD), decision-feedback detection (DFD), and tree-search detection (TSD). Also, we introduce the lattice basis reduction techniques that obtain a more orthogonal channel matrix over which the detection is done. Detailed discussions on the advantages and drawbacks of each detection algorithm are also introduced. Furthermore, several recent author contributions related to MIMO detection are revisited throughout this survey.

  • The need for assessing dynamic response of typical industrial piping systems subjected to seismic loading motivated the authors to apply model reduction techniques to experimental dynamic substructuring. Initially, a better insight into the dynamic response of the emulated system was provided by means of the principal component analysis. The clear understanding of reduction basis requirements paved the way for the implementation of a number of model reduction techniques aimed at extending the applicability range of the hybrid testing technique beyond its traditional scope. Therefore, several hybrid simulations were performed on a typical full-scale industrial piping system endowed with a number of critical components, like elbows, Tee joints and bolted flange joints, ranging from operational to collapse limit states. Then, the favourable performance of the L-Stable Real-Time compatible time integrator and an effective delay compensation method were also checked throughout the testing campaign. Finally, several aspects of the piping performance were commented and conclusions drawn.

  • The reliability evaluation of the large scale network becomes very complicate according to the growing size of network. Moreover if the reliability is not constant but follows probability distribution function, it is almost impossible to compute them in theory. This paper studies the network evaluation methods in order to overcome such difficulties. For this an efficient path set algorithm which seeks the path set connecting the start and terminal nodes efficiently is developed. Also, various variance reduction techniques are applied to compute the system reliability to enhance the simulation performance. As a numerical example, a large scale network is given. The comparisons of the path set algorithm and the variance reduction techniques are discussed.

  • RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) is a technology that facilitates transcriptome analysis using next-generation sequencing (NSG) tools. Information on the quantity and sequences of RNA is vital to relate our genomes to functional protein expression. RNA-Seq data are characterized as being high-dimensional in that the number of variables (i.e., transcripts) far exceeds the number of observations (e.g., experiments). Given the wide range of dimensionality reduction techniques, it is not clear which is best for RNA-Seq data analysis. In this paper, we study the effect of three dimensionality reduction techniques to improve the classification of the RNA-Seq dataset. In particular, we use PCA, SVD, and SOM to obtain a reduced feature space. We built nine classification models for a cancer dataset and compared their performance. Our experimental results indicate that better classification performance is obtained with PCA and SOM. Overall, the combinations PCA+KNN, SOM+RF, and SOM+KNN produce preferred results.

  • One of the main techniques for diagnosing heart disease is by examining the electrocardiogram(ECG). The earlier noise reduction techniques can not effectively cancellation complex noise from the noisy ECG such powrline interference, baseline drift, muscle artifact. In this paper, we performed the extrude noise from and recovering the ECG signal using wavelets transform that has recently been applying to various fields.

  • The singular value decomposition is a tool which is used to find a linear structure of reduced dimension and to give interpretation of the lower dimensional structure about multivariate data. In this paper the singular value decomposition is reviewed from both algebraic and geometric point of view and, is illustrated the way which the tool is used in the multivariate techniques finding a simpler geometric structure for the data.
