Tiled Image Compression Method to Reduce the Amount of Memory Needed for Image Processing in Mobile Devices (모바일 단말기에서 이미지 처리에 필요한 메모리 사용량을 줄이기 위한 타일화 이미지 압축 기법)

  • A new compressed image format is proposed to use a large size of image in mobile games without the constraints of hardware specifications such as memory amount, processing power, which encodes each block of a large size image in scan line order. Using the experiments, we show the effectiveness of proposed method compared with a general PNG in terms of compression ratios and required memory in decoding processes. Also, the loading delay can be reduced by decoding only the displaying area of a large image in run-time.

A Design on the Wavelet Transform Digital Filter for an Image Processing (영상처리를 위한 웨이브렛 변환 디지털 필터의 설계)

  • In this paper, we proposed the hardware architecture of wavelet transform digital filter for an image processing. Filter bank pyramid algorithm is used for wavelet transform and each fillet is implemented by the FIR filter. For DWT computation, because the memory controller is implemented by hardware, we can efficiently process the multisolution decomposition of the image data only input the parameter. As a result of the image Processing in this paper, 33㏈ PSNR has been obtained on 512$\times$512 B/W image due to 11-bit mantissa processing in FPGA Implementation. And because of using QMF( Quadrature Mirror Filter) properties, it reduces half number of the multiplier needed DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform) computation so the hardware size is reduced largely. The proposed scheme can increase the efficiency of an image Processing as well as hardware size reduced. The hardware design proposed of DWT fillet bank is synthesized by VHDL coding and then the test board is manufactured, the operating Program and the application Program are implemented using MFC++ and C++ language each other.

  • Image normalization is one of the important areas in pattern recognition. Also, log-polar images are useful in the sense that their image data size is reduced dramatically comparing with conventional images and it is possible to develop faster pattern recognition algorithms. Especially, the log-polar image is very similar with the structure of human eyes. However, there are almost no researches on pattern recognition using the log-polar images while a number of researches on visual tracking have been executed. We propose an image normalization technique of log-polar images using momentums applicable for affine-invariant pattern recognition. We handle basic distortions of an image including translation, rotation, scaling, and skew of a log-polar image. The algorithm is experimented in a PC-based real-time vision system successfully.

  • Symmetry region searching can extract face region without a prior information in an image by using symmetric. However, this method requires a plenty of the computation time because the mask size to process symmetry region searching must be larger than the size of object such as eye, nose and mouth in face. In this paper, we proposed symmetric by using symmetry region searching in the reduced image to reduce computation time of symmetry region searching. It was applied to this method in an original image. To extract exact face region, we also experimented face region searching by using domain division in extraction legion.

Memory-Efficient Belief Propagation for Stereo Matching on GPU (GPU 에서의 고속 스테레오 정합을 위한 메모리 효율적인 Belief Propagation)

  • Belief propagation (BP) is a commonly used global energy minimization algorithm for solving stereo matching problem in 3D reconstruction. However, it requires large memory bandwidth and data size. In this paper, we propose a novel memory-efficient algorithm of BP in stereo matching on the Graphics Processing Units (GPU). The data size and transfer bandwidth are significantly reduced by storing only a part of the whole message. In order to maintain the accuracy of the matching result, the local messages are reconstructed using shared memory available in GPU. Experimental result shows that there is almost an order of reduction in the global memory consumption, and 21 to 46% saving in memory bandwidth when compared to the conventional algorithm. The implementation result on a recent GPU shows that we can obtain 22.8 times speedup in execution time compared to the execution on CPU.

Block-based subband/DCT coding (블록단위 대역분할/DCT 부호화)

  • Subband/DCT coding has been introduced in order to transmit images of various resultions using one given image-codec, for nowadays there are various grades of quality in visual communication services. However, subband/DCT results in the increawse of multiplication number and memory size. In order to resolve this problem, we propose block-based subband/DCT coding in this paper. In block-based subband/DCT, the number of multiplications is not only reduced because we combine subband decomposistion with DCT, but the size of memory is also reduced because images can be parallel-processed block by block. We show that the number of multiplications is reduced, by analyzing the property ofblock-based subband/DCT matrix mathematically, and examine the performance of proposed coder, which adopts JPEG as backhand-coder after block-based subband/DCT.

CNN based Image Restoration Method for the Reduction of Compression Artifacts (압축 왜곡 감소를 위한 CNN 기반 이미지 화질개선 알고리즘)

  • As realistic media are widespread in various image processing areas, image or video compression is one of the key technologies to enable real-time applications with limited network bandwidth. Generally, image or video compression cause the unnecessary compression artifacts, such as blocking artifacts and ringing effects. In this study, we propose a Deep Residual Channel-attention Network, so called DRCAN, which consists of an input layer, a feature extractor and an output layer. Experimental results showed that the proposed DRCAN can reduced the total memory size and the inference time by as low as 47% and 59%, respectively. In addition, DRCAN can achieve a better peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity index measure for compressed images compared to the previous methods.

  • This paper proposes a variable block size vector quantization based on a biorthogonal wavelet transform for image compression. An image is first decomposed with the biorthogonal wavelet transform into multiresolution image and the wavelet coefficients of the middle frequency bands are segmented using the quadtree sturcture to extract the perceptually important regions in the middle frequency bands. A sedges of middle frequency bands exist the corresponding position of high frequency bands, the complicated quadtree structure of middle frequency bands is equally applied to the high frequency bands. Therefore the overhaed information of the quadtree codes needed to segment the high frequency bands can be reduced. The segmented subblocks are encoded with the codebook designed at the each scales and directions. The simulation results showed that the proposed methods could reproduce higher quality image with bit rate reduced about 20(%) than of the preceding VQ method and sufficiently reduce the bolck effect and the edge degradation.

Facial Feature Extraction in Reduced Image using Generalized Symmetry Transform (일반화 대칭 변환을 이용한 축소 영상에서의 얼굴특징추출)

  • The GST can extract the position of facial features without a prior information in an image. However, this method requires a plenty of the processing time because the mask size to process GST must be larger than the size of object such as eye, mouth and nose in an image. In addition, it has the complexity for the computation of middle line to decide facial features. In this paper, we proposed two methods to overcome these disadvantage of the conventional method. First, we used the reduced image having enough information instead of an original image to decrease the processing time. Second, we used the extracted peak positions instead of the complex statistical processing to get the middle lines. To analyze the performance of the proposed method, we tested 200 images including, the front, rotated, spectacled, and mustached facial images. In result, the proposed method shows 85% in the performance of feature extraction and can reduce the processing time over 53 times, compared with existing method.

  • This paper introduces a possibility of a low-cost, high-resolution fingerprint sensor chip. The test chip is composed of $64{\times}256$ sensing cells(chip size : $2.7mm{\times}10.8mm$). A new detection circuit of charge sharing is proposed, which eliminates the influences of internal parasitic copacitances. This the reduced sensing-capacitor size enables a high resolution of 600dpi, using even conventional 0.6${\mu}m$ CMOS process. The partial fingerprint image captured therefrom are synthesized into a full fingerprint image with a image synthesis algorithm. The problems and possibilities of image synthesis technique are also analyzed and discussed.
