  • The purpose of this study was to observe the effect on the water quality and sediment environment by the use of Nano-S for anti-Red tide material. The experiment was performed at subtidal and intertidal zone during six months(from Aug 2005 to Feb. 2006). The experiment sites were divided with concentration of materials. One is lower concentration(0.1%) and the other is higher concentration(1%). The results of experiments didn't show the remarkable influence of the materials effect before and after applying the Nano-S and the red mud. pH, salinity and DO were slowly increased during experiment period but nutrients were conversely decreased in the seawater. In the subtidal zone, qualities of sediments, IL, AVS and COD, were gradually lowered and the similar results were appeared in the intertidal zone. These results showed similar trends over all the experiment sites including control site. The results of heavy metals also did not show the interest different effect before and after applying the Nano-S and red mud compared with control site.

  • 12 or 25 hours continuous observations were made for the variations of nutrients and chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ with tidal cycle at a fixed station located at a mid-channel of the Masan Bay. High nitrate concentrations were observed at the time of low tides whereas high phosphate concentrations at the time of high tides. It is suggested that anoxic bottom waters could also be the possible source of high phosphates in the outer bay. Chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentrations were related to the nitrates in April and to the phosphates in June and August. The possible role of growth stimulators in causing the extensive blooms of red tide organisms is suggested.

  • Cochlodinium polykrikoides is one of the most harmful red tide dinoflagellates and is highly toxic to fish. Red tides due to this dinoflagellate have been reported in Korea, Japan, and other countries, and frequently cause severe damage to fish farming. Recently study has suggested that C. polykrikoides generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide anion ($O_{2-}$) and hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$), and the ROS-mediated ichthyotoxicity has been proposed. • Small red algae, especially those previously referred to as 'primitive' are often overlooked, but can be quite abundant. These 'primitive' red algae are now placed in several classes distinct from the Florideophyceae, for example the Stylonematophyceae. A brownish-red filamentous alga was collected from a sandy tide pool at Cape Tribulation, Queensland, Australia. Cultured specimens were identified as Bangiopsis and conformed to the morphological characters of the genus (multicellular base, erect filaments branched or unbranched, uniseriate to multiseriate-tubular, single multilobed purple-red to red-brown plastid with central pyrenoid, vegetative cells released directly as spores). Molecular data of two plastid genes (rbcL, psbA) support placement of the Australian isolate and isolates from India in Bangiopsis. The genetic variation between these isolates and isolates from Puerto Rico previously attributed to B. subsimplex indicates that these should be considered as a separate species. As the type locality is in the Atlantic Ocean, French Guiana, and not far from Puerto Rico, and the Puerto Rican isolate has been used often in phylogenetic analyses, we propose that the Indian and Pacific Ocean isolates be designated a new species, B. franklynottii, to acknowledge Ott's many years of research on inconspicuous freshwater and marine red algae. Our research also highlights the lack of careful descriptions in many of the records of this genus and the lack of morphological characters to distinguish species. Especially within the morphologically simple red algae, morphological distinctness does not necessarily reflect evolutionary divergences.

  • A red tide organism, Amphidinium carterae was incubated under different iron/chelator and nitrate concentrations to investigate the factors controlling the growth. The chelation capacity played a critical role in regulating the nitrate reductase (NR) activity and in vivo fluorescence of this organism. However, there was a significant difference between the NR activity and in vivo fluorescence in response to trace metals and chelator treatments. In vivo fluorescence was the highest in FeEDTA 10 ${\mu}$M treatments and the lowest in DTPA 10 ${\mu}$M treatments. This indicates that the availability of the trace metal is important in regulating the in vivo fluorescence of this photosynthetic microalgae In contrast, NR activity showed the highest values in trace metal enriched treatments, and trace metal + DTPA treatments showed fairly high NR activities. This suggests that DTPA treatment did not hinder the NR activity as much as it did in vivo fluorescence. In vivo fluorescence and NR activity increased with nitrate concentration of up to 50 ${\mu}$M and remained relatively constant or the rate of increase decreased above that concentration, indicating that initial nitrate concentration of higher than a certain level would not accelerate the growth of A. carterae. Further investigation is needed to elucidate the reason for the difference in timing sequence between the NR and in vivo fluorescence in response to different metal treatments and chelation capacity.

  • Recently, the prediction and analysis technology of marine environment are actively being studied since the ocean resources in the world is taken notice. The prediction of marine disaster by automatic collecting marine environment data and analyzing the collected data can contribute to minimized the damages with respect to marine pollution of oil spill and fisheries damage by red tide blooms and marine environment upsets. However the studies of the marine environment monitoring and analysis system are limited in South Korea. In this paper, we study the marine disasters prediction system model to analyze collection marine information of out sea and near sea. This paper proposes the models for the marine disasters prediction system as communication system model, a marine environment data monitoring system model, prediction and analyzing system model, and situations propagation system model. The red tide prediction model and summarizing and analyzing model is proposed for prediction and analyzing system model.

  • The damage of water quality like red tide occurs every year inspite of the total load regulation of pollutant inflows from land such as COD, phosphorus and so on around Seto inland sea in Japan. It is attributed to the increase of primary production due to eutrophication. and the rising and settling from the sediment containing nutrient salt. Furthermore, the recent research shows that nutrient salt such as nitrogen and phosphorus, flows into Kii channel from land as well as the Pacific ocean. To investigate the distribution of water quality and flow and residual current in Kitan strait, the field observations were carried out. The field data were obtained a time each season from 1999 to 2002. The results of observations and data of other research institution are used to understand the mechanism of pollution in the strait.
