  • Four orange-red phosphorescent Ir(III) complexes were designed and synthesized based on the benzoylphenylpyridine ligand with a fluorine substituent. Multilayered OLEDs with the device structure, ITO/2-TNATA/NPB/CBP : 8% Ir(III) complexes/BCP/Liq/Al, were fabricated using these complexes as dopant materials. All the devices exhibited orange-red electroluminescence and their electroluminescent properties were quite sensitive to the structural features of the dopants in the emitting layers. Among these, the maximum luminance ($14700\;cd/m^2$ at 14.0 V) was observed in the device containing Ir(III) complex 1 as the dopant. In addition, its luminous, power and quantum efficiency were 11.7 cd/A, 3.88 lm/W and 9.58% at $20\;mA/cm^2$, respectively. The peak wavelength of electroluminescence was 606 nm with CIE coordinates of (0.61, 0.38) at 12.0 V. The device also showed stable color chromaticity with various voltages.

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a complex mixture of natural substances of ginseng and baeknyeoncho on the arthritic rats. Methods : In vitro experiments were conducted to ensure the stability of the complex. After setting toxicity and concentration by MTT assay, the antioxidant effect was measured through DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity. To confirm the anti-inflammatory effects of the complex, levels of nitric oxide (NO) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, TNF-α) were measured in LPS-treated macrophage cell lines (RAW264.7). We injected monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) 50 μl (60 mg/ml) into knee joints of rats to induce osteoarthritis. The rats were divided into three groups (normal (n=5), control (n=5), and OR (n=5) group). The control group consumed 2 mg/kg of physiological saline once a day for 4 weeks, and the OR group was mixed at a concentration of 416.5 mg/kg of Baengnyeoncho (O) and 208.25 mg/kg of red ginseng (R) and ingested 1 mL each 5 days a week. Results : This complex increased the DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging rate. The complex decreased NO production and pro-inflammatory cytokine production of macrophages. In the OR group, the secretion of cytokine in serum was decreased. In histopathological examination, the joint tissue of the composite showed less damage to the synovial membrane, cartilage, and fibrous tissue than the control group. Conclusions : As a result of this study, natural complexes have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cartilage protection effects. Therefore, we expect the complex to be effective in treating osteoarthritis.

  • We characterized the resistances such as to waterlogging, Phytophythora and viruses in hybrids between Italian and Korean mother lines and screened them for complex resistances and agronomic traits to select elite multi-resistant lines for hybrid breeding. Resistance to waterlogging was selectable due to diversity of the resistance. Phytophythora resistance introduced from Italian lines could also be combined with resistance to other diseases and restoration abilities from cytoplasmic male sterility that has been maintained in Korean varieties.

  • Objective : The immune system is a complex of systems, all of which work together to clear infection from the body. In Korea, red ginsenghas been one of the herbs most widely used to enhance the immune system for thousand of years. More recently, red ginseng has been reported to have many positive effects on the immune system. The purpose of this study was evaluate the effects of Korean red ginseng and Chinese red ginseng on IgG, IgM, and IgA, using immunoglobulin productivity assay. Methods : Male SD rats were separated into 3 groups. We administered Korean red ginseng (KRG) to one group and Chinese red ginseng (CRG) to another, with normal saline for the Control group consecutively and orally for 3 months. The dose of red ginseng was 500mg per day, as a powder with soluble water. Immunoglobulin levels from spleen cell were estimated by ELISA kit. Results : In immunoglobulin productivity assay (cell), the IgG level of the KRG group significantly increased but there was no significant difference in the IgG of the CRG group. The IgM level of the KRG group significantly increased stimulated with PWM. When it was unstimulated, the level of IgM in KRG and CRG increased together. The IgA level of the KRG group significantly increased when it was stimulated with PWM and unstimulated. Conclusion : According to the above results, oral administration of red ginseng for 3 months is considered useful for immunomodulatory effect, and Korean red ginseng may be superior to Chinese red ginseng in that effect.

  • The effect of pressures and temperatures on the stabilities of the durene-iodine charge transfer complex have been investigated through ultraviolet spectrophotometric measurements in n-hexane. The stabilities of complexes were measured at 25, 40 and $60^{\circ}C$ under $1{\sim}1600$ bars. The equilibrium constant of the complex was increased with pressure and decreased with temperature raising. The absorption coefficient was increased with both pressure and temperature. Changes of volume, enthalpy, free energy and entropy for the formation of complexes were obtained from the equilibrium constants. The red-shift observed at a higher pressure, the blue-shift at a higher temperature, and the relation between pressure and oscillator strength were discussed by means of thermodynamic functions.

  • Design and syntheses of four red phosphorescent heteroleptic cationic iridium(III) complexes containing two substituted phenylquinoxaline (pqx) or benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl-pyridin (btp) main ligands and one 2,2'-biimidazole (H2biim) ancillary ligand are reported: [$(pqx)_2$Ir(biim)]Cl (1), [$(dmpqx)_2$Ir(biim)]Cl (2), [$(dfpqx)_2$Ir(biim)]Cl (3), [$(btp)_2$Ir(biim)]Cl (4). Complex 1 showed a distorted octahedral geometry around the iridium(III) metal ion with cis metallated carbons and trans nitrogen atoms. The absorption, emission and electrochemical properties were systematically evaluated. The complexes exhibited red phosphorescence in the spectral range of 580 to 620 nm with high quantum efficiencies of 0.58 - 0.78 in both solution and solid-state at room temperature depending on the cyclometalated main ligands. The cyclic voltammetry of the complexes (1-3) showed a metal-centered irreversible oxidation in the range of 1.40 to 1.90 V as well as two quasi reversible reduction waves from -1.15 to -1.45 V attributed to the sequential addition of two electrons to the more electron accepting heterocyclic portion of two distinctive cyclometalated main ligands, whereas complex 4 showed a reversible oxidation potential at 1.24 V and irreversible reduction waves at -1.80 V.

  • $Eu^{3+}$ -doped $Y_2$$O_3$ phosphors has been prepared by a polymerized complex method and investigated their powder and luminescence properties. They were compared with phosphors prepared by a solid state reac-thion method. The phosphors synthesized have been characterized by X-ray diffraction low-voltage lu-minescent emission spectroscopy etc. Under low-voltage electron excitation $Eu^{3+}$-doped $Y_2$$O_3$ exhibited a strong narrow-band red emission peaking at 612nm. On the other hand the critical value for concentration quenching of sample prepared by the polymerized complex method fired at $1400^{\circ}C$ is x=0.05 for $(Y_{1-x}Eu_x__2O_3$ The emission intensity of phosphors prepared by the polymerized complex method was higher than that of phosphors prepared by the solid state reaction method.
