  • This paper measures the forced convective heat transfer from heated cylinder to air flow in a rectangular duct at Re$_{D}$ =2,337, 4,589, 6,621 and 7,944 through experiments. And the heat transfer is computed by 3-D numerical computation in which various turbulent models are applied. It is shown through the comparison of experimental and computed data that numerical computation with standard k-$\varepsilon$ model predicts the experimental data most accurately. Furthermore, the correlation from the computed heat transfer is almost similar to that from the experiment when Re$_{D}$ is greater than 4,589. In addition, the correlation of McAdams is the closest to that from experimental data among various correlations from literature in the range of Reynolds number.ber.

  • The present study investigates the effect of the shear rate-dependent thermal conductivity of non-newtonian fluids on the heat transfer enhancement in a 2:1 rectangular duct flow. An axially-constant heat flux and a peripherally-constant temperature boundary conditions(H1) was adopted for a top-wall-heated configuration. The present numerical results of Nusselt numbers for SRDC(Separan) show heat transfer enhancement over those of SRIC. The Nusselt numbers increased linearly as Reynolds numbers increased. The heat transfer enhancement is due to an increased thermal conductivity near the wall, which is attributed to the shear rate-dependence.

  • This study is to provide the experimental information and basic data on heat transfer characteristics of horizontal liquid film driven by hot wind. Heat transfer characteristics of the liquid film in the rectangular duct was observed and the change of film temperature was measured. The experiments were carried out for a variety of parameter, such as feed water rate and velocity and temperature of feed air. From the observation and the measurement the general understanding of heat transfer characteristics for liquid film driven by hot wind was provided.

  • A comparison of fully developed heat transfer and friction factor characteristics has been made in rectangular ducts with ones roughened by five different shapes. The effects of rib shape geometries and Reynolds number are examined. The rib height-to-duct hydraulic diameter, pitch-to-height ratio, and aspect ratio of channel width to height are fixed at e/De=0.0476, P/e=8, and W/H=2.33, respectively. To understand the mechanisms of the heat transfer enhancements, the measurements of the friction factors are also conducted in the smooth and rough channels. The data indicates that the triangular type rib has a substantially higher heat transfer performance than any other ones in the range we studied.

  • This study is to analyze turbulent flow over a backward-facing step in a rectangular duct. The side wall effects on the internal flow were determined by varying the aspect ratio(defined as the step span-to-height ratio) from 1 to 20. In the flow behind a backward-facing step, separation, recirculation and redeveloping is occurred frequently. These phenomena appear in a particular variation by varying the aspect ratio. The results show that the aspect ratio has an influence on the velocity and reattachment length. When the AR is increased, the reattachment length is increased. For 6 over aspect ration, the rate of increase is decreased. The length of recirculation in the upper corner is increased, as the increase of aspect ration. It's width is not changed in the variation of aspect ration. The transverse, streamwise and spanwise velocities were decreased along the flow down stream of the step.

  • A ceramic monolith heat exchanger is studied to find the performance of heat transfer and pressure drop by numerical computation and $\xi$-NTU method. The numerical computation was performed throughout the domain including fluid region in exhaust gas-side rectangular ducts, ceramic core and fluid region in air-side rectangular duct with the air and exhaust in cross flow direction. In addition, the heat exchanger was also analyzed to estimate the performance by conventional $\xi$-NTU method with several Nusselt number correlations for flow in rectangular duct from literature. By comparisons of both performances by the numerical computation and the $\xi$-NTU method, the effectiveness by $\xi$-NTU method was closest to the result by numerical computation within a relative error of 2.14% when Stephan's Nusselt number correlation was adopted to the $\xi$-NTU method among the several correlations.

  • Accurate simulation of jet plume exhausting into the open space as well as onto the opposing wall is of interest both numerically and physically; the latter, from a system designer's point of view. In the current work, Navier-Stokes computation is undertaken to capture the flow pattern of a supersonic jet impinging onto a rectangular duct which deflects the vertical jet horizontally. Of particular interest are the flow structure in the jet exhaust area, pressure pattern and the magnitude of pressure force at the bottom wall. Usefulness of present characteristic boundary condition applied at the exiting plane of the duct is demonstrated by capturing such complex flow structures for different lengths of the deflection duct.

  • Circular-to-rectangular transition ducts are used as exhaust components of high performance fighter aircraft with vectored thrust nozzles. Three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes solver is used to analyze the transition duct. Cross sections of transition duct are defined by superelliptic equation. The grid system is generated by Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline, after generating surface grid by blending the cross sections. Good agreement between the results of the computational simulation and the experimental data is observed.

  • The present study investigates convective heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics inside the rib-roughened cooling passage of the gas turbine blades. A square duct with rectangular ribs is used and $\wedge-$ and V-shape ribs with $60^{\circ}$ attack angle are installed on the test plate surfaces. Naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the detailed local heat transfer coefficients using the heat and mass transfer analogy. The ribs disturb the main flow resulting in the recirculation and secondary flows near the ribbed wall and the vortices near the side-wall. The local heat transfer and the secondary flow in the duct are changed largely according to the rib orientation. A square duct with $\wedge$ and V-shape ribs has two pairs of secondary flow because of the rib arrangement. So, the duct has complex heat/mass transfer distribution. The average heat/mass transfer coefficient and pressure drop of $\wedge-$ and V-shape ribs are higher than those with $90^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ attack angles. The average heat/mass transfer coefficient on the $\wedge-shape$ ribs is higher than that on the V-shape ribs. Also, the uniformity of heat/mass transfer coefficient on discrete ribs is higher than that on continuous rib.
