  • The present study conducted heat transfer analysis in multi-layer of CD-R. It is necessary to analyze heat transfer during the recording process to find optimum power and write strategy in CD-R. This study investigated effects of several parameters such as recording speed, laser power, layer thickness and thermal property. The calculated results presented temperature distribution in the multi-layer and detailed information of recording characteristics. Optimum laser power was estimated, comparing an optimum mark length with the calculated mark lengths. The results showed that the optimum laser power was influenced significantly by the layer thickness and the thermal properties of the dye.

  • KVN(Korean VLBI Network) introduced the Mark6 system of the MIT haystack observatory as a recorder for data recording up to 32 Gbps for VLBI(Very Long Baseline Interferometry) observation. The Mark6 recorder can record data at up to 32Gbps when two systems and 64 HDDs are installed. However, because of the unique recording method that is characteristic of Mark6, we are introducing a large amount of data into a virtual file system, or using a general RAID method, which causes data loss when reading and transferring files at the highest recording speed or file system have. The Flexbuff system, a software recorder developed by JIVE(Joint Institute for VLBI ERIC), can be configured to operate as a data recorder through RAID configuration and network upgrades. In particular, when installed in the Mark6 system, it can record VLBI data at a maximum speed of 32 Gbps with less loss of data compared to the existing Mark6 by utilizing Mark6 resources well. In this paper, we propose that the existing Mark6 system can be operated as Mark6-Flexbuff by installing jive5ab software, and it is verified through experiment that it can be effectively used for VLBI observation operation through data recording test.

  • Read out signal and temperature distribution of magnetic amplifying magnetooptical disk were studied. Temperature distribution of recording layer and adjacent layers were calculated when the disk was at rest. Mark size, length and location were simulated from a chain of recording beam pulses. In addition, signal amplitude depending on the shape of the marks, readout signals from the recording layer and amplified marks of the readout layer, were simulated. Simplified thermal conduction model was used to calculate the temperature distribution of recording and adjacent layers as a function of time as well as to calculate the mark size, length and location. Readout signal was calculated by the convolution of the disk reflectivity and the Gaussian beam intensity. Readout signal from the mark in the readout layer amplified to the size of the laser beam fumed out to be twice as large as the signal from the crescent shaped mark in the recording layer.

  • In this paper, we evaluated error correction performance and recording density of an optical disc system. The performance of Low-Density Parity Check code (LDPC) is compared to the HD-DVD (BD) ECC. The recording density of optical disc can be increased by reducing the redundancy of the user data. Moreover, since the correction capability of LDPC with decreased redundancy is better than that of BD, the recording density can also be increased by reducing the mark length of the data on the disc surface.

  • In this paper, we developed new time information recording module of VSI (VLBI Standard Interface) format by analyzing the Mark5B recorder control and operation software with 1Gbps speed, which is able to record the weak signal of space radio source, through the Korean VLBI Network (KVN). The control and operation software of high-speed recorder consists of 2 kinds of software, which is that it can operate RAID control board by controlling large capacity HDD drive and the network control and operation. Especially, core software in high-speed recorder is able to output the results after performing and analyzing the input command. Through the analysis of control and operation software, new time information recording module, which is needed to process the observed data for correlation, is developed. New developed time information recording module can record the time information together after checking the interrupt of 1PPS(Pulse Per Second) input signal when the observed data will be recorded. To verify the normal operation of the developed time information recording module, we performed the real observation test and confirmed the effectiveness of developed software through analyzing the recorded observation data.

  • Using metal/Si materials as a recording layer, we have achieved good results for a SR disc (super resolution disc). Mainly by controlling metal composition and the ratio of metal to Si of recording layer, signal qualities were greatly enhanced. At the mark length of 75nm, the best CNR (Carrier to Noise Ratio) was about 45dB. Write power was reduced down to about 6.5mW. LFN (Low Frequency Noise) could also be reduced down to 14dB. Single tone pattern jitters for every mark whose length is from 2T through 8T were achieved to be below 10%. The readout signal was stable sustaining CNR>40dB during about 15,000 times reading. The so-called "3T-problem" could be avoided.

  • This study deals with the heat transfer analysis on phase change optical disc with land/groove recording by means of numerical method. Finite difference time domain(FDTD) method was used to obtain the amount of absorption of light propagating inside disc and finite difference element(FEM) method was used to calculate the temperature distribution. The calculated results present the detailed information of recording characteristics on the phase change optical disc. The temperature profiles are quite different between the land track and the groove track. The recorded mark shape on land track is smaller and more elliptic than that on groove track. It is shown that the thermal problem to the neighboring track takes place due to secondary peaks. It is found that the different write strategy should be applied to land and groove recording, respectively.

  • The research topic of super-RENS technology is shifting from the signal intensity (CNR; Carrier to Noise Ratio) to the signal uniformity (Jitter or bER). To achieve an uniform signal characteristics, it is important to reduce signal fluctuation in a super-RENS disc. In this study, we investigated the relation between signal fluctuation and low frequency noise (LFN), and analyzed LFN increase in recording and readout processes. It was found that signal fluctuation had a close relationship with the LFN. Also, it was found that the recorded mark shape such a bubble type and high readout power increased the LFN in recording and readout process of a super-RENS disc. So, using non-bubble type recording material and low super-resolution readout material, we markedly improved the LFN in a super-RENS disc.

  • PURPOSE. Articulation paper mark size is widely accepted as an indicator of forceful tooth contacts. However, mark size is indicative of contact location and surface area only, and does not quantify occlusal force. The purpose of this study is to determine if a relationship exists between the size of paper marks and the percentage of force applied to the same tooth. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty dentate female subjects intercuspated into articulation paper strips to mark occlusal contacts on their maxillary posterior teeth, followed by taking photographs. Then each subject made a multi-bite digital occlusal force percentage recording. The surface area of the largest and darkest articulation paper mark (n = 240 marks) in each quadrant (n = 60 quadrants) was calculated in photographic pixels, and compared with the force percentage present on the same tooth. RESULTS. Regression analysis shows a bi-variant fit of force % on tooth (P<.05). The correlation coefficient between the mark area and the percentage of force indicated a low positive correlation. The coefficient of determination showed a low causative relationship between mark area and force ($r^2$ = 0.067). The largest paper mark in each quadrant was matched with the most forceful tooth in that same quadrant only 38.3% of time. Only 6 2/3% of mark surface area could be explained by applied occlusal force, while most of the mark area results from other factors unrelated to the applied occlusal force. CONCLUSION. The findings of this study indicate that size of articulation paper mark is an unreliable indicator of applied occlusal force, to guide treatment occlusal adjustments.
