In some port construction, a case of reclamation with dredged soil for land use can be found. Even though this is not a new technology, there are some problems on the test method and analysis. The design parameters are still remained to be solved to get accurate prediction. Sedimentation of particle and self-weight consolidation are the most important design parameters in reclamation by dredged soils. The design parameters are influenced by properties of the physical and sedimentation of dredged soils. This influencing factors can be determined depend on the history of long term sedimentation and particle characteristics. Thus, properties of the sedimentation and consolidation are varies depend on the regional geologic formation. In this paper, three different sites with different regional soil properties will be compared in design parameters of sedimentation and self-weight consolidation.
As the tideland reclamation is done on a large scale these days, construction work is active in the coastal areas. Facilities in the coastal areas must be built with the tide characteristics taken into consideration. Thus the tide characteristics affect the overall reclamation plan. The analysis of the tide data boils down to a harmonic analysis of the hourly changes of long-term tide data and extraction of unharmonic coefficients from the results. Since considerable amount of tide data of the West Coast are available, the existing data can be collected and can be used to obtain the temporal changes of the tide by being fitted into the tide prediction model. The goal of this thesis lies in assessing whether the mean sea level used in the field agrees with the analysis results from the long-term observation data obtained with their homogeneity guaranteed. To achieve this goal, the research was conducted as follows. First the present conditions of the observation stations, the land level standard, and the sea level standard were analyzed to set up a time series model formula for representing them. To secure the homogeneity of the time series, each component was separated. Lastly the mean sea level used in the field was assessed based on the results obtained form the analysis of the time series.

A long-term field demonstration experiment of selected stabilization method to reduce the heavy metal mobility in farmland soil contaminated by heavy metals around abandoned mine site was conducted. Field demonstration experiments were established on the contaminated farmland with the wooden plate(thickness=1cm) which dimension were width=200cm, Length=200cm, height=80cm and filled with treated soil, which was mixed with lime stone and steel refining slag except on control plot. Soil samples were collected and analyzed during the experiment period(2008. 2~2008. 8) after the installation of the plots. Field demonstration experiments results showed that the application ratio of lime stone 5% was effective for immobilizing heavy metal components in contaminated farmland soil.
potential assessment of converting closed non sanitary landfills into sustainable landfill through the reclamation works(= landfill mining project) of illegal landfill discovered in land development site using Sustainable Landfill Reclamation system(SLR-system) was investigated. The SLR system had treatment capacity of 91.4 $m^3/hr$ (130.61 ton/hr) in condition of 28.0% of water content. Recovery ratio and purity of sorted soil were 98.9% and 99.66%, respectively. Sorted combustibles were 91.8% and 92.0%, respectively. Especially, high heating value (HHV) and low heating value(LHV) of combustibles were 4,282kcal/kg and 3,636 kcal/kg, respectively, in considering the energy content and recovery ratio of combustibles. Therefore, combustibles separated from landfill site have higher value than Fluff RDF standard value(3,500kcal/kg) of MOE. RDF can be produced with combustibles by 84.43%. Averaged size and organic foreign matter content of the sorted soil were less than 035mm and 0.31 %(VN), respectively. In addition, concentration of all contents of hazardous matters containing soils met safety standards. Therefore, it is possible to be recycled as refilling and cover materials to rebuild Sustainable landfills by 98.42%.
The word 'Saemangeum' indicates an estuarine tidal flat in the southwestern part of the Korean peninsula. The Saemangeum Reclamation Project was launched as a national project in 1991 to reclaim a large coastal area of $401\;km^2$ by constructing a 33-km long dyke. The final dyke enclosure in April 2006 has transformed the tidal flat into lake and land. An integrated oceanographic study has been conducted since 2002 as a part of the Government Action Plan to monitor and assess changes in the marine environment. Prior to the dyke enclosure, the coastal environment in the Saemangeum was a complex system governed by tidal motion, estuarine processes, and coastal circulation of the Yellow Sea. The dyke construction has radically changed not only the estuarine tidal system inside the dyke, but also the coastal marine environment outside the dyke. Post to the dyke enclosure, subsequent changes such as red tide, hypoxia, and coastal erosion/deposition occur successively. Red tides appear almost the year round in the inner area. Even under the condition that the sluice gates are fully open, the water quality does not improve as much as the developers would expect, mainly due to the critical reduction of the hydrodynamic stirring power. We will introduce details of our monitoring program and significant changes in the Saemangeum marine environment, based on observations and model results.
This paper presented the strength and environmental characteristics of reclaimed-ground filled with controlled low-strength materials (CLSM) made of coal ash, small amounts of cement, and water in a reclamation site and evaluated the possibility of the use of coal ash on reclamation materials for beneficial use. Three-month period of SPT, CPT, environmental effects evaluation etc. were conducted. N values and cone resistances in ground filled with CLSM were greater than or similar to those in dredging sand. In case of land filled with coal ash except cement these values were lower than those in dredging sand. The results of soil and seawater pollution were lower than test criteria without high pH. Also the values of PH test were measured between pH 5.0~9.0, the criteria of industrial water in the Law for the Underground Water of Korea.
This paper aims to suggest ways of institutionally improving standards that must be applied when installing Water Reclamation/Reuse (WRR) system based on efficiency analysis. Currently, the standard for WRR system establishment requires that the system should treat more than 10% of used water in the building of over $60,000m^2$ in total area of all floors, but our research has found that it would be more effective to change the standard to $150-m^3-per-day$ reclaimed water or the total area of all floors of $30,000m^2$ ($50,000m^2$ in the case of an office building). In other words, what this paper suggests is not a one-size-fits-all standard based on the total area of all floors, but a reasonable and flexible standard that takes into account efficiency and a unit water usage according to a building's purpose. Furthermore, this paper recommends a new WRR standard that can be applied to large-scale land development for housinglots, like the New Town. The recommendation is based on the economic analysis that the WRR system will ensure efficiency only if the amount of reclaimed water is over 4,000 tons per day, which corresponds to 4 millions square meters of housinglots. Regarding the size of the established facility, this paper suggests changing the standard, which is now set at over 10% of water usage, to what is relative to the total amount of use of reclaimed water in order to ensure efficiency and promote use of reclaimed water. In addition, this paper proposes that governmental support should be offered not only to facility owners, who are recipients at present, but also to facility builders. By doing so, those who donate a facility to the government, central or local, after building it, can be provided with substantial aid. Therefore, the application of the institutional improvement suggested in this paper is expected to create environment-friendly living conditions and boost the quality of life by encouraging people to secure water resources efficiently in buildings, and in a wider range, in cities.
The supply of high quality filling materials for pavement base course or reclamation is getting harder. So, there is an attempt to use soft mudstones as an earth filling material in Pohang area. But the engineering properties of the soil deposit placed with soft mudstones have not been clearly evaluated yet. We investigated the water absorption and softening, the slaking behavior and the geological mechanism in order to obtain an effective way of estimating the magnitude of land subsidence and the reduction of soil strength. The applicability of soft mudstones is examined by a variety of laboratory tests and pilot-scale field tests. In addition, it is necessary to consider the environmental characteristics of soft mudstones as a reclaiming material, Consequently, the results from the current study can be used to prevent any construction defects due to the careless use of soft mudstones for the pavement base course or reclamation.
In Korea, the common remedial process for reclamation of agricultural soils nearby abandoned mines involves chemical soil stabilization followed by covering with clean soil. This study investigated the chemical properties of cover soils and the validity of HCl extraction method in assessing the degree of As and heavy metal stabilization in stabilized soils collected from 14 plots where mine reclamation had been completed. The results revealed there were no major differences in contaminants extraction rate between the stabilized soils and contaminated soils, suggesting HCl extraction procedure is a less feasible method to determine the efficiency of the stabilization. Soil quality indicators including OM, SiO2, P2O5, etc. of the land-covering soils were generally lower than those of stabilized soils that used to be the cultivation layer before the stabilization. Nonetheless, the value of those indicators didn't meet the regulatry limits of agricultural soil. Therefore, future strategy for mine reclamation should concentrate not only on contaminant concentration but also on soil quality parameters for agricultural use of the reclaimed soil.
This study was carried out to obtain reasonable management method of salt-affected soil for ecological restoration in the reclaimed land. Chemical properties of reclaimed soil was investigated base on reclamation years. Ionic acitivity in soil and satruration extract were analyzed to estimate the effect of salt interception by planting ground treatment. The soil porperties of reclaimed land was saline-sodic soil with $11.3dSm^{-1}$ of electrical conductivity, 34.8% of exchangeable sodium percent in first reclamation year. Electrical conductivity, exchangeable sodium and exchangeable chlorine were remarkedly decreased during six years after reclamation but chemical properties of reclaimed soil was unsuitable status for tree growth. Exchangeable sodium perecnt was higher in the neighborhood parks and street tree sites than in the buffer green spaces and was higher in subsoil than in topsoil of profile in all sites. Content of soduim, chloride and sulfate in saturation extract were more than other ions. Content of soduim and chloride were higher in the neighborhood parks and street tree sites than in the buffer green spaces and were higher in subsoil than in topsoil. Content of calcium plus magnesium of soil was higher in the buffer green space than in the neighborhood park and street tree but content of calcium and magnesium in saturation extract were higher, as result from exchangeable sodium, in the neighborhood parks and street tree sites than in the buffer green spaces. Concentration of salt in soil showed the difference with mounding height and planting ground treatment. The lowest concentration of salt appeared in buffer green spaces and street tree sites was the highest. Salt interception by mounding height in the same planting ground treatment was more effective 120cm of mounding height than 70cm of mounding height.
