A micro cyclone combustor was developed to be used as a heat source of thermoelectric power generator (TPG). The cyclone combustor was designed so that fuel and air were supplied to the combustion chamber separately. The mixing and flow characteristics in the combustor were investigated numerically. The global equivalence ratio (${\Phi}$), defined using the fuel and air flow rates, was introduced to examine the flow features of the combustor. The mixing of fuel and air inside the combustor could be well understood using the fuel concentration distribution. It was found that the weak recirculating zone was formed upper the fuel-supplying tube in case of ${\Phi}$ < 1.0. In addition, it was found that small regions that have a negative axial velocity exist near the fuel injection ports. It is assumed that these negative axial velocity regions can stabilize a flame inside the micro cyclone combustor.
The recirculating flows which occur in the prosthetic heart valve have been known to cause several diseases in the human body. And the recent studies show that the shear stress at the wall of the artery is also very important factor in the formation of thrombus. And many studies knave been devoted in obtaining more information about the blood flow through the prosthetic heart valve. In this Paper, the steady axisymmetric flow through the Disc-Type Heart Valve is studied by using the numerical method. The geometry of the Disc-Type Heart Valve is simplified, and the flow is assumed to be steady axisymmetric flow. The vorticity transport equation derived from the Wavier-Stoke's equation is used as the governing equation, and the explicit finite difference method is used to obtain the steady state solution. The results for several Reynolds numbers show that the recirculating flow becomes large as the Remolds number increases. Furthermore, it can be shown that the magnitudes of the vorticity and the stresses are also increased with the Reynolds number, but there is only a little change in their configurations of distribution and in their positions of maximum values.
Two combined autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD) and biofilter (BF) systems were operated to treat the piggery wastewater and the ammonia offgas. Experimental results indicated that the organic removal efficiency of ATAD-2, operated with oxygen, was higher than that of ATAD-1, operated with air. The concentration of ammonia in ATAD-2 offgas was higher compared to ATAD-1 offgas, but the total amount of ammonia produced from ATAD-2 was less than that from ATAD-1 due to the lower oxygen flowrate. The ammonia gas produced from both ATAD reactors was successfully removed by the BF. The BF-1, connected with ATAD-1, removed 93% of ammonia at the loading rate of $9.4g\;NH_3-N/m^3/hr$. The BF-2, connected with ATAD-2, removed 95% of ammonia gas at the loading rate of $8.1g\;NH_3-N/m^3/hr$. As the nitrification process continued, pH value of recirculating solution continuously decreased due to the accumulation of nitrate. When the ammonia loading rate was less than $22.7g\;NH_3-N/m^3/h$, the proper replacing cycle of recirculating solution was in the range of 10 to 11 days. Almost 90% of total mass of nitrogen fed into the each BF was confirmed from the mass balance on nitrogen.
Numerical changes of coliform bacteria in a recirculating aquarium were measured as fouling indicator. The contamination of the filter bed was mainly due to the food given to fishes, the fecal materials and the additional supply of water polluted already. Abundance of the bacteria in the aquarium was controlled by the physiochemical factors of water quality. Of these factors, pH was the main factor. Under the water temperature $20^{\circ}C$, if pH was controlled at lower than $5\~6$, the bacteria did not flourish seriously. Under the water temperature over $30^{\circ}C$, the bacterial growth was markedly decreased regardless of the pH value, and the bacterial flora seemed to be active in growth under temperature condition lower than $30^{\circ}C$.
Marine diesel engines with high thermal efficiency and fuel diversity used for propulsive power have been taking charge of important position on marine transport. However, marine environment has recently focused on emissions such as nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide which is generated from combustion of low grade fuels. EGR(Exhaust gas recirculation) system is one of effective methods to reduce the nitrogen oxide emission from marine diesel engines. In general, it is considered that recirculating gas influences fuel combustion and emissions in diesel engines. However, along with positive effects of EGR, the EGR system using fuels of including high sulfur concentration should be considered about re-combustion and activation of sulfur dioxide in recirculating gas. Therefore, in experimental study, an author investigates effects of sulfur dioxide mixture concentration in intake air on combustion and exhaust emission characteristics in a direct injection diesel engine. In results, change of sulfur dioxide concentrations in intake air had negligible impact on combustion chamber pressure, rate of heat release and emissions compared with effects of oxygen decreasing and carbon dioxide increasing of EGR.

An experimental study on the flow over the axisymmetric backward-facing step was carried out. The purposes of the present study are to investigate the effect of the free stream turbulence intensity on the reattachment length and to understand the turbulence structure of the recirculating flows. Local mean and fluctuating velocity components were measured in the separated and reattaching axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer over the wall of convex cylinder placed in a water tunnel by using 2-color 4-beam fiber optics laser Doppler velocimetry. As the free stream turbulence intensity increased, the reattachment length became shorter due to the enhanced mixing in the separated shear layer. It was also observed that the reverse flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy increase with increasing free stream turbulence intensity. Spectral data and flow visualization showed that low-frequency motions occur in the separated flow behind a backward-facing step. These motions have a significant effect on the time-averaged turbulence data.

There have been many studies on biofilter process regarding satisfactory water quality and the operational conditions of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS). For effective nitrification processes, it is necessary to dynamically identify and apply nitrifying microorganisms. Physical, chemical and biological processes concerning biofilms can be applied and influential factors including substrate, dissolved oxygen concentrations, organic matter, temperature, pH, alkalinity, salinity and mixing velocity intensity need to be considered. Also, designing and managing the process based on the dynamic interpretation of these factors are prerequisites for engineering applications of the biofilter process. This paper draws on current literature on the kinetics of nitrification of biofilms in the biofilter process. Influential factors for nitrification are crucial during the biofilter process and are expected to be critical in informing the design and operation of recirculating aquaculture systems.
The effects of temperature on nitrification of enriched nitrifiers were investigated by using kinetics and thermodynamics method through the batch test. Aquaculture recirculating water, which was sampled at Chung Cheong Buk-Do Inland Fisheries Research Institute, was analized to observe the characteristics of nitrification. Temporal variation of ammonium, nitrite and nitrate concentration was measured at batch experiments. Activation energy was calculated using Arrhenius equation with the oxidation rates of specific ammonium or nitrite ion. These oxidation rates were measured at temperature range of $6-35^{\circ}C$ and ammonium concentration range of 0.2-1.8 mg/L. Two distinct activation energy of Nitrosomonas sp. at temperature $6-15^{\circ}C\;and\;15-35^{\circ}C$ was 93.1 and 25.0 KJ/mol, respectively. Nitrate accumulation was observed at temperature over $15^{\circ}C.$

Combustion and extinction limits in heat-recirculating excess enthalpy reactors employing both gas-phase and catalytic reaction have been examined with an emphasis Reynolds number (Re) effects and possible application to microscale combustion devices. In this paper, geometrically similar reactors of different physical sizes and different numbers of turns were tested with the aim of estimating for combustor characteristics. Combustion efficiency is estimated by measuring exhausted gases through the gas chromatograph. From these results the effect of scale and number of turns are demonstrated and optimal operating conditions for Swiss roll combustors are identified.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of flow and wall shear stress under steady and pulsatile flow in the aneurysm. The numerical simulation using the software were carried out for the diameter ratios ranging from 1.5 to 3.0, Reynolds number ranging from 900 to 1800 and Womersley number, 15.47. For steady flow, it was shown that a recirculating vortex occupied the entire bulge with its core located closer to the distal end of the bulge and the strength of vortex increased with increase of the Reynolds number and diameter ratio. The position of a maximum wall shear stress was the distal end of the aneurysm regardless of the Reynolds number and diameter ratios. For the pulsatile flow, a recirculating flow at the bulge was developed and disappeared for one period and the strength of vortex increased with the diameter ratio. The maximum values of the wall shear stress increased in proportion to the diameter ratio. However, the position of a maximum wall shear stress was the distal end of the aneurysm regardless of the diameter ratios.
