  • There are two methods for train control in information transmission by using track circuit system and installing wayside transmitter. Information signal is transmitted to the on-board antenna by using rails. Continuous information about train intervals, speed and route is received by on-board antenna in AF track circuit system. The information signal is included with carrier wave and received by magnetic coupling in the on-board antenna. Therefore, it is important to define standard current level in the AF track circuit system. When current flowed to rails is low, magnetic sensors are not operated by decreasing magnetic field intensity. Hence, SNR is decreased because electric field intensity is decreased. When the SNR is decreased, there is the serious influence of noise upon demodulation. So, the frequency of information signal is not extracted in frequency response. Thus, it is possible to happen to train accident and delay as the information signal is not analyzed in the on-board antenna. In this paper, standard energy density is calculated by using Parseval's theory in UM71c track circuit. Hence, detection time of information signal is presented.

  • Underwater images carry information that is useful in the fields of aquaculture, underwater military security, navigation, transportation, and so on. In this research, we transmitted an underwater image through various underwater mediums in the presence of underwater turbulence and beam attenuation effects using a high-speed visible optical carrier signal. The optical beam undergoes scintillation because of the turbulence and attenuation effects; therefore, distorted images were observed at the receiver end. To understand the behavior of the communication media, we obtained the bit error rate (BER) performance of the system with respect to the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Also, the structural similarity index (SSI) and peak SNR (PSNR) metrics of the received image were evaluated. Based on the received images, we employed suitable nonlinear filters to recover the distorted images and enhance them further. The BER, SSI, and PSNR metrics of the specific nonlinear filters were also evaluated and compared with the unfiltered metrics. These metrics were evaluated using the on-off keying and binary phase-shift keying modulation techniques for the 50-m and 100-m links for beam attenuation resulting from pure seawater, clear ocean water, and coastal ocean water mediums.

  • OFDM (Orthogonal frequency Division Multiplexing) systems convert serial data stream to N parallel data streams and modulate them to N orthogonal subcarriers. Thus spectrum utilization efficiency of the OFDM systems are high and high-speed data transmission is possible. However, with the OFDM systems using the same modulation method at all subcarriers, the error probability is dominated by the subcarriers which experience deep fades. Therefore, in order to enhance the performance of the system adaptive modulation is required, with which the modulation methods of the subcarriers are determined according to the estimated SNRs. The IEEE 802.11a system selects various transmission speed between 6 and 54 Mbps according to the modulation mode. There are three typical methods for SNR estimation: Direct estimation method uses the frequency domain symbols to estimate SNR directly by minimizing MSE (Mean Square Error), EVM method utilizes the distance between the demodulated constellation points and received complex values, and the method utilizing the Viterbi algorithm uses the cumulative minimum distance in decoding process to estimate the SNR indirectly. Through comparison analyses of three methods we propose a new SNR estimation method, which employs both the EVM method and the Viterbi algorithm. Finally, we perform extensive computer simulations to confirm the performance improvement of the proposed adaptive OFDM systems on the basis of IEEE 802.11a.

  • The multiband communication technique is effective in terms of performance and throughput efficiency because it can overcome selective frequency fading by allocating the same data to different frequency bands in the environment of rapidly changing channel transfer characteristic. In addition, the transmission distance can be further extended while overcoming various underwater channel environments. In this paper, we analyzed the performance of multiband transmission technique in underwater communication by increasing number of band using Turbo pi code with a coding rate of 1/3. Simulation results shows that the performance is improved when the number of bands is increased based on the received SNR.

  • In medical ultrasound imaging, frequency-dependent attenuation downshifts and reduces a center frequency and a frequency bandwidth of received echo signals, respectively. This causes considerable errors in quadrature demodulation (QDM), result in lowering signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast resolution (CR). To address this problem, adaptive dynamic QDM (ADQDM) that estimates center frequencies along depth was introduced. However, the ADQDM often fails when imaging regions contain hypoechoic regions. In this paper, we introduce a valid region-based ADQDM (VR-ADQDM) method to reject the misestimated center frequencies to further improve SNR and CR. The valid regions are regions where the center frequency decreases monotonically along depth. In addition, as a low-pass filter of QDM, Gaussian wavelet based dynamic filtering was adopted. From the phantom experiments, average SNR improvements of the ADQDM and the VR-ADQDM over the traditional QDM were 1.22 and 5.27 dB, respectively, and the corresponding maximum SNR improvements were 2.56 and 10.58 dB. The contrast resolution of the VR-ADQDM was also improved by 0.68 compared to that of the ADQDM. Similar results were obtained from in vivo experiments. These results indicate that the proposed method would offer promises for imaging technically-difficult patients due to its capability in improving SNR and CR.

  • Identification of communication channels is a problem of important current theoretical and practical concerns. Recently proposed solutions for this problem exploit the diversity induced by antenna array or time oversampling. The method resorts to an adaptive filter with a linear constraint. In this paper, an approach is proposed that is based on decomposition. Indeed, the eigenvector corresponding to the minimum eigenvalue of the covariance matrix of the received signals contains the channel impulse response. And we present an adaptive algorithm to solve this problem. Proposed technique shows the better performance than one of existing algorithms.

  • We propose a sub-band spreading technique for adaptive modulation (AM) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in order to reduce signaling overheads and to average frequency selective fading channels causing different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values for subcarriers in each subband. The conventional sub-band based AM schemes can also reduce signaling overheads and complexity for allocating a resource per sub-band at a time. However, they may suffer from the channel variation in a sub-band when the sub-band size is larger than the channel coherence bandwidth (BW). The sub-band spreading at the transmitter enables the received symbols in each sub-band to have an identical reliability even in a frequency selective fading channel. We rigorously analyze the averaged SNR value at the receiver of the sub-band spreading system and the analyzed average SNR in a sub-band is used for an adaptation criterion. The proposed AM scheme outperforms the conventional sub-band based OFDM scheme without spreading, and it can yield better throughput performance than the conventional subcarrier based AM schemes when we consider the signaling overheads.

  • This paper presents the performance evaluation of an adaptive QAM scheme under flat and frequency selective fading channels for indoor wireless communication systems. The QAM modulation is combined with differential encoding and the demodulation process is carried out noncoherently. The adaptation is performed by varying the modulation level of QAM, depending upon received signal strength. The adaptation mechanism allows a 2- or 3-bit increase or decrease at a time, if the channel condition is considered to be significantly good or bad. Simulation results show that the average number of bits per symbol (ABPS) for each symbol block transmitted over a flat fading channel is higher than 5.0 and the BER performance is better than 10^-4 for a SNR value higher than 30 dB. For frequency selective fading channels, an oversampling technique in the receiver was employed. The BER performance obtained for frequency selective fading channels is better than 10^-4 with a SNR value of 40 dB and ABPS is found to be approximately 5.5. Therefore, this scheme is very useful in that it provides both very high bandwidth efficiency and acceptable performance with moderate SNR values over flat and frequency selective fading channels. In addition, this scheme provides reduced receiver complexity by way of noncoherent detection.

  • In this paper, Polarity Thresholding(PT) algorithm has been studied to enhance the received signal in ultrasonic inspection of the stainless-steel(SUS 304) which is the primary piping material of a nuclear power plant. The spectral decomposition components obtained by splitting the spectrum of received signals are composed of dispersive signal of the interference pattern produced by the grain boundaries and nondispersive signal by the flaw. PT algorithm enhance the SNR of received signal by using above properties. In experiment the stainless-steel has been chosen as the sample and heat-treated at 1125, 1150, 1175, and $1200^\circ{C}$, respectively. And the flat-bottom hole type defects have been made artificially in samples. The pulse-echo signals from the sample by using ultrasonic transducer of center frequency 5 MHz have been processed by PT algorithm. It has been shown that PT algorithm enhanced the SNR by average 14.2 dB.

  • We propose a linear precoding scheme combining the merits of beamforming and orthogonal space-time block coding based on the imperfect CSI without knowing the CSI reliability. We first investigate the impact of the CSI reliability on precoding performance by assuming various values of the CSI reliability. Then, we propose a method of predicting the CSI reliability based on the received SNR for the design of an efficient precoder. We show the efficiency of the proposed scheme by simulation.
