Analysis of User Preference for Designing Real-Time Warning Information (실시간 교통안전 경고정보 제공을 위한 이용자 선호도 분석 연구)

  • Provision of advanced warning information is one of the useful countermeasures to prevent traffic accidents. Analysis of user's preference for any information contents would be a backbone in designing more effective warning information systems. This study aimed at deriving more comprehensive and valuable warning information that leads to user's safer driving by conducting a questionnaire survey. In total, 258 people including various age groups and driving experiences participated in the survey. Preferable warning information contents were identified by this study. It is expected that the results would be useful data for providing warning information to drivers.

  • Variable message signs (VMS) are a useful tool for providing real-time traffic information to drivers. In particular, effective warning information provision leading to safer driving would be an important countermeasure to prevent traffic accidents. The purpose of this study was to identify users' preferences for traffic safety warning information formats. A variety of warning information scenarios using text and pictograms were devised and investigated for the purpose of selecting more effective methods to provide warning information. A portable variable message sign (PVMS) was used to evaluate users' preferences. The results of this study can be used for designing better warning information for the enhancement of traffic safety.

Preliminary study on the Earthquake Alert System (지진네트워크를 이용한 지진경보시스템 예비연구)

  • It is essential to establish an earthquake alert system real-time seismographic data acquisition and data transmission by dedicated communications,. Up to now approximately 60 earthquake stations are installed in Korea and being operated by KMA. KEPRI,. KINS and KIGAM and its number will be increased in time. The earthquake data recorded in half of these stations are transmitted to data center and analysed in quasi real-time. Therefore if these real-time seismographic stations be connected to each organization by dedicated lines and we will develop an algorithm which we can calculate the magnitude and epicenter within 25-30 seconds after an earthquake occurred it will be possible to develop an Earthquake Alert System giving several tens of seconds warning in advance.

  • Integrating a field of transportation and IT is becoming a novel solution to social and economic problems which was previously focused on the investment in infrastructures. It also created new areas of industry such as ITS and telematics. Especially, vehicle communication is being considered very important and DSRC is also important in the field of rational ITS in recent. DSRC OBE has come into wide use through ETCS. In the field of traffic signal control, the research to implement an optimal traffic signal control system using a real-time information of good quality is being carried out and also the study of WISDOM was successfully completed. This paper shows the development of Dynamic-Dilemma zone warning service utilizing WISDOM and the evaluation of a reliability and a practicality through the field test. While the proposed Dynamic-Dilemma warning system transmits an information of signal time optimized by WISDOM, the OBE which receives this information makes dilemma zone based on its location and speed and gives warning to a driver.

  • Lane extraction and lane departure warning algorithms using the image sensor attached in the vehicle are addressed. With the research about intelligent automobile, there have been many algorithms about lane recognition and lane departure warning system. However, since these algorithms require to detect 2 lanes, the high time complexity and the low recognition rate under various driving circumstances are critical problems. In this paper, we present a lane departure warning algorithm using single lane extraction and center point analysis that achieves the fast processing time and high detection rate. From the geometry between camera and objects, the region of interest (ROI) is determined and splitted into two parts. Hough transform detects the part of the lane. After the detected lane is restored to have a pre-determined size, lane departure is estimated by calculating the distance from the center point. On real driving environments, the presented algorithm is compared with previous algorithms. Experiment results support that the presented algorithm is fast and accurate.

  • Recently, as the number of high-height vehicles such as double-decker buses has increased, collision accidents have occurred in bridges and tunnels due to the deviation from the designated routes and driver's carelessness. In the case of the existing front collision warning system, it is limited to vehicles and pedestrians, so it is difficult to use it as a pass height warning system for the high height vehicles. In this paper, we propose a system that generates a warning by determining the correlation and time series characteristics of data for each segment using multiple lidar sensors and then determining the possibility of collision in the upper part of the vehicle. Also, the proposed system confirmed the proper operation through a real-time driving test and a system performance evaluation by the Korea Automobile Testing & Research Institute.

  • There is monitored amount operation variables and controlled by operating conditions and loads at many facilities using gas also chemical plants. The process fault which can be indicated by operators, is occurred when the abnormal state was accumulated continuously owing to physical failure, external disturbance or human error. This is studied a Early Warning System which is to estimate process status by real-time monitoring operation variables and to early warning before it will be occurred process fault.

  • This paper describes design and tuning of a full-range Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with collision avoidance. The control scheme is designed to control the vehicle so that it would feel natural to the human driver and passengers during normal safe driving situations and to avoid rear-end collision in vehicle following situations. In this study, driving situations are determined using a non-dimensional warning index and time-to-collision (TTC). A confusion matrix method based on natural driving data sets was used to tune control parameters in the proposed ACC System. An ECU-Brake Hardware-in-the-loop Simulation (HiLS) was developed and used for an evaluation of ACC System. The ECU-Brake HiLS results for alternative driving situation are compared to manual driving data measured on actual traffic way. The ACC/CA control logic implemented in an ECU was tested using the ECU-Brake HiLS in a real vehicle environment.

Development of Urban Flood Warning System Using Regression Analysis (회귀분석에 의한 도시홍수 예보시스템의 개발)

  • A simple web-based flood forecasting system using data from stage and rainfall monitoring stations was developed to solve the difficulty that real-time forecasting model could not get the reliabilities because of assumption of future rainfall duration and intensity. The regression model in this research could forecast future water level of maximum 2 hours after using data from stage and rainfall monitoring stations in Daejeon area. Real time stage and rainfall data were transformed from web-sites of Geum River Flood Control Office & Han River Flood Control Office based MS-Excel 2007. It showed stable forecasts by its maximum standard deviation of 5 cm, means of 1~4 cm and most of improved coefficient of determinations were over 0.95. It showed also more researches about the stationarity of watershed and time-series approach are necessary.

Architecture for Integrated Real-Time Health Monitoring using Wireless/Mobile Devices

  • This research is to propose an applicable framework for real-time health surveillance and safety monitoring at construction sites. First this study aims at finding (1) a framework for health surveillance that is likely to benefit employers and employees in the industry, (2) a valid way to identify factors or conditions with potential health concerns that can occur under particular work conditions, (3) An effective way to apply wireless/mobile sensors to construction workers using real-time/live data transmission methods, and (4) A relationship between a worker's vital signs and job site environment. Biosensors for physiological response and devices for weather/work related data are to collect real-time data. Relationships between jobs and physiological responses are analyzed and factors that touched particularly contributing to certain responses are identified. When data are incorporated with tasks, factors affecting tasks can be identified to estimate the magnitude of the factors. By comparing work and normal responses possible precautionary actions can be considered. In addition, the study would be lead to improving (1) trade-specific dynamic work schedules for workers which would be based on various factors affecting worker health level and (2) reevaluating worker productivity with health status and work schedule, thereby seeking ways to maximize worker productivity. Through a study, the paper presents expected benefits of implementing health monitoring.
