Real Time Driver's Respiration Monitoring (실시간 운전자 호흡 모니터링)

  • Real time driver's respiration monitoring method for detecting driver's drowsiness is investigated. The sensor to obtain driver's respiration signal was a piezoelectric pressure sensor attached at the abdominal region of the seat belt. The resistance of the pressure sensor was changed according to the pressure applied to the seat belt due to the driver's respiration. Monitoring driver's respiration was carried out by driving on the virtual road in a driving simulator from Cheonan to Seoul and monitoring results were compared to the PELCLOS. Experiment results show that the driver's respiration signal can be used for detecting driver's drowsiness.

A Case Study of the Rock-fall Signal Lamp System for Preventing the Damage at the Cut-Slopes (사면붕괴 피해 예방을 위한 낙석신호등 설치 사례 연구)

  • The failure of the road cut-slope due to heavy rains brings about lots of injuries and damage on national properties. KICT has developed CSMS system by means of prevention to manage the dangerous cut slopes. In spite of the continuous management the frequency of cut-slopes failure is increasing the past due to changes of earth-environment. KICT has installed the "Real-Time Monitoring System" on dangerous slopes. The operation of Real-Time Monitoring System is used as a positive system to reduce injuries and damages. However, Although the slope manager is aware of the signs collapsed in advance, it has temporal and spatial limits until the slope manager performs the works which are preventing the accidents. When real time monitoring system finds out an indication of slope collapse, the Rock-fall Signal Lamp System makes road-users indicated the risk of cut slopes. It is a kind of prevention system that it will minimize the damages of the properties as suspension of traffic automatically or passively.

An USN Test Bed Construction for Real Time Monitoring of Road Environment Information (실시간 도로 환경 정보 모니터링을 위한 USN 테스트베드 구축)

  • Recently, the development of the information-communications industry has created a new paradigm of the ubiquitous and the smart environments. An USN is a typical technology for constructing a ubiquitous environments. But the USN technologies applied in practice have a lot of problems and to solve these problems that this study was to build a test bed. For the creation of the needs of USN technology, we suggest a method and service of monitoring of road hazards combining the USN and the Geographic Information System(GIS). We conduct making the USN equipment relevant provisions surveys, making installation guidelines, construction system and real-time testing. This study is capable of the management of public facilities, real-time monitoring of accident and the environment data and is expected to be expanded to a 3D facility management combineded with BIM in the future.

On-road Air Pollution Characteristics around a Day-care Center in Urban Area (도심 어린이집 주변 도로상 대기오염도 특징)

  • Five on-road measurements were made using a mobile laboratory (ML) to characterize spatial and temporal air pollutant distributions over roads around a day-care center in urban area on 30 August 2013. Fixed monitoring was also done near the day-care center using the ML during the periods between on-road measurements. On-road air pollution monitoring route was classified into seven sections and three zones to identify severe polluted roads among many roads having different traffic volumes and directions. Typical pollutants emitted from vehicles such as $NO_x$, black carbon, particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and submicron particles including nanoparticles were monitored using real-time instruments. Peak concentration episodes were frequently observed during the on-road measurements and most peaks were simultaneously monitored at four pollutants. Colored on-road air pollution map for each pollutant provides an insight on spatial air pollution distribution, showing heavily polluted roads and sections. Average on-road $NO_x$ concentration of each run was similar to that monitored at the nearest roadside air monitoring station.

  • Traffic congestion is a severe problem in many modern cities around the world. Real-time and accurate traffic congestion identification can provide the advanced traffic management systems with a reliable basis to take measurements. The most used data sources for traffic congestion are loop detector, GPS data, and video surveillance. Video based traffic monitoring systems have gained much attention due to their enormous advantages, such as low cost, flexibility to redesign the system and providing a rich information source for human understanding. In general, most existing video based systems for monitoring road traffic rely on stationary cameras and multiple vehicle tracking method. However, most commonly used multiple vehicle tracking methods are lack of effective track initiation schemes. Based on the motion of the vehicle usually obeys constant velocity model, a novel vehicle recognition method is proposed. The state of recognized vehicle is sent to the GM-PHD filter as birth target. In this way, we relieve the insensitive of GM-PHD filter for new entering vehicle. Combining with the advanced vehicle detection and data association techniques, this multiple vehicle tracking method is used to identify traffic congestion. It can be implemented in real-time with high accuracy and robustness. The advantages of our proposed method are validated on four real traffic data.

  • This paper introduces a real time inspecting and monitoring system by using wireless communication and image processing technique. The communication system is developed by using 80c196kc microprocessor and it has data acquisition function for several kinds of sensors such as pluviometer, temperature, tension meter, elinometer and so on. The image processing method adopts Lalacian of Gaussian operator and least square method to extract line features for the captured images and uses a relaxation matching algorithm based in global structure constraint satisfaction to distinguish the matching error for those features.   • The movement of rock cut slopes may result in upheaval of an adjacent road. Because most cut slopes consist of rock, road upheaval due to the movement of a cut slope is a rare phenomenon in Korea. We found that the movement of rock slopes which are heavily weathered and with strongly developed weak zones is governed by circular failure of the overall rock formation rather than by failure along discontinuities. The results of a numerical analysis revealed that the application of a ubiquitous joint model in a continuum analysis is appropriate for anisotropic rocks (e.g., schist) and for slopes for which the stability is influenced by a particular discontinuity. The results of a field investigation and numerical analyses suggest that retaining walls and anchors should be used to stabilize rock slopes and that real-time monitoring equipment should be installed to assess the reinforcing effect of the remedial measures.

  • Road surface measurement is an essential process for quantifying the degree and displacement of roughness in road surface management. For safer road surface management and quick maintenance, it is important to accurately measure the road surface while mounted on a vehicle. In this paper, we propose a sophisticated road surface measurement system that can be measured on a moving vehicle. The proposed road surface measurement system supports more accurate measurement of the road surface by using a high-performance line laser sensor. It is also possible to measure the transverse and longitudinal profile by matching the position information acquired from the RTK, and the velocity adaptive update algorithm allows a manager to monitor in a real-time manner. In order to evaluate the proposed system, the Gocator laser sensor, MRP module, and NVIDIA Xavier processor were mounted on a test mobile and tested on the road surface. Our evaluation results demonstrate that our system measures accurate profile base on the MSE. Our proposed system can be used not only for evaluating the condition of roads but also for evaluating the impact of adjacent excavation.

Analysis of Roadside Fugitive Dust Generation Characteristics in Rural Areas Adjacent to Quarry Sites (채석단지 인근 농촌지역 도로 비산먼지 발생 특성 분석)

  • This study focused on quantifying fugitive dust levels around rural village adjacent near a stone quarry, specifically examining the influence of quarry operations and gravel transport vehicles on road dust dispersion. For this purpose, fugitive dust concentration monitoring was conducted to understand the impact of gravel transport vehicles operating through the quarry area on the generation of road dust. Gravimetric analysis indicated substantial increases in Total Suspended Particulate (TSP) concentration (5.8 times), PM-10 (3.6 times), and PM-2.5 (2.0 times) during quarry operations on the quarry transport road. Real-time monitoring during dump truck operation revealed average dust concentrations of TSP 566.8 ㎍/m3, PM-10 174.8 ㎍/m3, and PM-2.5 55.3 ㎍/m. This indicates a significant increase compared to non-operation periods, with TSP concentration rising by 5.8 times, PM-10 concentration by 3.6 times, and PM-2.5 concentration by 2.0 times. Significantly elevated dust levels were observed at the village entrance road and quarry transport road during quarry operations, with PM-10 exceeding regulatory limits by 2.2 times and PM-2.5 exceeding limits by 1.9 times on the quarry transport road. Especially, particles with a diameter greater than 10 ㎛ exhibited a meaningful increase during dump truck transportation. Considering these findings, the study recommends implementing dust mitigation measures, including the introduction of dust barriers, screens, and wheel washing facilities for quarry-bound dump trucks.

  • In this paper, We propose a method which prevents severe traffic jam by controlling traffic signal by itself based on image-processed information and fuzzy logic. The detailed idea of this method is first to let a closed monitoring camera gather the number of cars which show the flow of traffic the designated roads which are commonly considered to have traffic. After executing the image processing method on each image gathered from the monitoring camera, this system determines the changing timing of traffic signal based on fuzzy logic. Also, this image processing method shows good performance in real road environment because the setup background image which used in this system is designed to be updated in real time. All of good points mentioned above would lead driver and users to cost efficient and time efficient results by preventing the increase of the number of traffic on road in advance with the automatic traffic signal controlling algorithm based on the fuzzy logic.
