  • Sine digital signal processing for motion pictures requires huge amount of data computation to store, manipulate and transmit, more effective data compression is necessary. Therefore, the ITU-T recommended H.26x as data compression standards for digital motion pictures. The data compression method that eliminates time redundancies by motion estimation using relationship between picture frames has been widely used. Most video conding systems employ block matching algorithm for the motion estimation and compensation, and the algorithm is based on the minimun value of cast functions. Therefore, fast search algorithm rather than full search algorithm is more effective in real time low data rates encodings such as H.26x. In this paper, motion estimation employing the Nearest-Neighbors algorithm is designed to reduce search time using FPGA, coded in VHDL, and simulated and verified using Xilink Foundation.

  • Recently developed MPEG-4 Part 2 compression standard provides a novel capability to handle arbitrary video objects. To support this capability, an efficient object segmentation technique is required. This paper proposes a real-time algorithm for foreground object segmentation in video sequences. The proposed algorithm consists of two steps: the first step that segments a video frame into multiple sub-regions using Spatio-Temporal Watershed Transform and the second step in which a foreground object segment is extracted from the sub-regions generated in the first step. For real-time processing, the algorithm is partitioned into hardware and software parts so that computationally expensive parts are off-loaded from a processor and executed by hardware accelerators. Simulation results show that the proposed implementation can handle QCIF-size video at 15 fps and extracts an accurate foreground object.

  • Most of the previous video watermarking algorithms cannot be supported by real-time video processing. The maul reason is that in order to develop a robust algorithm the watermarking technique requires a very high computational cost when embedding and extracting the watermark in various frequency domains. Previous embedding methods simultaneously try to compress a video by MPEG and embed a watermark supporting real-time processing. However, In this paper, our proposed algorithm can support real-time processing in both spatial and frequency domains. First. the watermark is created on the courier transform domain, and next is inverse-Fourier-transformed ; then, we directly embed it into the video frame In the spatial domain. This procedure does not require a lot of the computational cost during embedding because of the spatial domain processing. Also, it is possible to support a video stream service and a very robust algorithm from MPEG compression and various geometric attacks.

  • Recently, the network Infrastructure grows rapidly and the digital image compression technique has made remarkable progress. Therefore, the demand of the real-time image surveillance system which uses a network camera server has been increasing. Network Camera Server has emerged as an attractive alternative to the CCTV for the wireless video surveillance. In this article, the model of JPEG Streamer for collecting and delivering JPEG image is designed and realized as a key module for the wireless video surveillance system. The thread pool and shared memory have been used to improve the stability and efficiency of the JPEG Streamer. In addition, the concept of double buffering is of much benefit to improve the quality of real-time image. In this article, the wireless video surveillance system by using JPEG Streamer is suggested to send the real-time image through the wireless internet with the personal digital assistance (PDA).

  • Recently, the demands for real-time service and multimedia data are rapidly increasing. There are significant redundancies between header fields both within the same packet header and in consecutive packets belonging to the same packet stream. But there are many overheads in using the current UDP/IP protocol. Header compression is considered to enhance the transmission efficiency for small size of payload. By sending the static field information only once initially and by utilizing dependencies and predictability for other fields, the header size can be significantly reduced for most packets. This work describes an implementation for header compression of the headers of U/UDP protocols to reduce overhead on Ethernet network. Typical UDP/IP Header packets can be compressed down to 7 bytes and the header compression system is designed and implemented on the Linux environment. Using the designed Header compression system between a server and a client have the advantage of effective data throughput in network.

  • The necessity for a technique to protect intellectual property of a digital content has been increasing, especially for the image/video contents which are the most favorite because of their high information-intensive property. According to this demand, this paper proposed a digital watermarking algorithm, which is recognized as the most promising technique. This algorithm targets MPEG compression system and the watermarking process is to be performed during the compression process. It inserts watermark only in Y components of I-frames. Experimental results showed that the proposed method satisfied both imperceptibility and robustness against various attacks. The PSNR difference between the compressed images(the average compression ratio was about 27:1 with Y:Cb:Cr=4:2:0 color format for TM5-based compression) with and without watermarking was only 1.8dB ($4.2\%$). In each case that the resulting image after an attack was reusable the normalized correlation between the extracted watermark and the original one was above 0.8.

  • Highly integrated MPEG-4@SP video compression engine, VideoCore, is proposed for mobile application. The primary components of video compression require the high memory bandwidth since they access the external memory frequently. They include motion estimation, motion compensation, quantization, discrete cosine transform, variable length coding, and so on. The motion estimation processor adopted in VideoCore utilizes the small-size local memories such that the video compression system accesses external memory as less frequently as possible. The entire video compression system is divided into two distinct sub-systems: the integer-unit motion estimation part and the others, and both operate concurrently in a pipelined architecture. Thus the VideoCore enables the real-time high-quality video compression with a relatively low operation frequency.

In this paper, my colleagues and I implement full motion video e-mail system using MPEG-4, the international standards for audio-visual data. This video e-mail system is made of web-based active-X control, so easily accessible by web, and applies real-time audio-video compression. It's possible for everyone to send video e-mail for free to everywhere in the world if this system is used. The main application areas of this system are multimedia mailing service, web-based video advertisement, remote education, remote medical service and shopping mall construction, etc.

  • In this paper, we have implemented an real-time adaptive feedback cancellation(AFC) algorithm that can be applied to multi-channel digital hearing aid. Multichannel digital hearing aid typically use the FFT filterbank based Wide Dynamic Range Compression(WDRC) algorithm to compensate for hearing loss. The implemented real-time acoustic feedback cancellation algorithm has one integrated structure using the same FFT filter bank with WDRC, which can be beneficial in terms of computation affecting the hearing aid battery life. In addition, when the AFC fails to operate due to nonlinear input and output, the reduction gain is applied to improve robustness in practical environment. The implemented algorithm can be further improved by adding various signal processing algorithm such as speech enhancement.
