  • Hybrid simulation is increasingly being recognized as a powerful technique for laboratory testing. It offers the opportunity for global system evaluation of civil infrastructure systems subject to extreme dynamic loading, often with a significant reduction in time and cost. In this approach, a reference structure/system is partitioned into two or more substructures. The portion of the structural system designated as 'physical' or 'experimental' is tested in the laboratory, while other portions are replaced with a computational model. Many researchers have quite effectively used hybrid simulation (HS) and real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) methods for examination and verification of existing and new design concepts and proposed structural systems or devices. This paper provides a detailed perspective of the enabling role that HS and RTHS methods have played in advancing the practice of earthquake engineering. Herein, our focus is on investigations related to earthquake engineering, those with CURATED data available in their entirety in the NEES Data Repository.

  • Recently, as the development system has become larger, sequential simulation methods have become impossible to verify systems that take a long time or require real time results. Therefore, a study of a distributed simulation system that simulates several processes has been conducted. In order to simulate real-time systems, efficient data exchange between distributed systems is required. Data Distribution Service is a data-oriented communication middleware proposed by Object Management Group and provides efficient data exchange and various QoS. However, in a large-scale distributed simulation environment distributed over a wide area, there is a problem of Participant Discovery and QoS guarantee due to domain separation in data exchange. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a DDS/SDN architecture that can guaranteed QoS and effective Participant Discovery in an SDN-based network.

  • The object-oriented (OO) distributed real-time (RT) programming movement started in 1990´s and is growing rapidly at this turn of the century. Distributed real-time simulation is a field in its infancy but it is bounded to receive steadily growing recognition for its importance and wide applicability. The scheme is called the distributed time-triggered simulation scheme which is conceptually simple and easy to use but widely applicable. A new generation object oriented (OO) RT programming scheme is called the time-triggered message triggered object(TMO) programming scheme and it is used to make specific illustrations of the issues. The TMO structuring scheme is a general-style components structuring scheme and supports design of all types of component including hard real time objects and non real time objects within one general structure.

  • The paper presents an Experimental Vehicle Model (EVM), that utilizes the kinematic characteristics of suspensions from SPMD test data. The relative displacement and orientation of a wheel with respect to the body are represented as a function of the vertical displacement of the wheel. The equations of motion of the vehicle are formulated in terms of local coordinates that do not require coordinate transformation, which improves the efficiency of dynamic analysis. The EOM was modularized for each suspension model, and a $6{\times}6$ vehicle model was obtained by combining six suspensions. The analysis results were compared with ADAMS to verify the accuracy of the EVM. This study also verifies the feasibility of real-time simulation with the developed EVM. For a vehicle simulation for 1 ms, the real simulation time required within 20% of the prescribed time. This result shows that the EVM meets the real-time simulation requirements.

  • Development of Small UAV using HILS (Hardware In the Loop Simulation) can be effectively used to improve the reliability of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) while reducing cost and time. It is also possible to reduce the damage to people or property by simulating the malfunction of the Flight Control Computer (FCC) that may occur during the actual flight. For applying such HILS, a real-time simulation environment capable of providing an environment similar to an actual flight condition is required. In this paper, we constructed a real - time HILS environment for Small UAV using 6 D.O.F motion table. In order to link the 6 D.O.F motion table developed in the previous research with the HILS environment in real time, the motion algorithm was changed from the position control method to the velocity control method. Also, we implemented modeling of inverse kinematics model for command transmission in Matlab $Simulink^{(R)}$ and verified the action of motion table according to the simulation model.

  • The view dependency of typical spatial-partitioning based NC simulation methods is overcome by polygon rendering technique that generates polygons to represent the workpiece, thus enabling dynamic viewing transformations without reconstruction of the entire data structure. However, the polygon rendering technique still has difficulty in realizing real-time simulation due to unsatisfactory performance of current graphics devices. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a mesh decimation method that enables rapid rendering without loss of display quality. In this paper. we proposed a new mesh decimation algorithm thor a workpiece whose shape varies dynamically. In this algorithm, the 2-map data thor a given workpiece is divided into several regions, and a triangular mesh is constructed for each region first. Then, if any region it cut by the tool, its mesh is regenerated and decimated again. Since the range of mesh decimation is confined to a few regions, the reduced polygons for rendering can be obtained rapidly. Our method enables the polygon-rendering based NC simulation to be applied to the computers equipped with a wider range of graphics cards.

  • Korea High Speed Train(KHST) is supposed to run up 350km/h, in which the braking system has a crucial role for the safety of the train. In the design st데 of the braking system, its very hard to ac-quire information data for design guidelines. A HILS(Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation) system can be used to get design data which could simulate the braking system of the real train in real-time. In this paper, cars are modelled including car dynamics, brake blending algorithms, pneumatic actuator dynamics, the models of each braking devices, adhesive coefficients, and soon. Real-time braking time, distance, and other design parameters are simulated using a DSP board and C language which shows the validity of the proposed method.

  • This paper proposes a real-time simulation technique for thin shells undergoing large deformation. Thin shells are almost two-dimensional structures visually well approximated as surfaces, such as leaves, paper sheets, hats, aluminum cans. Unfortunately accurate simulation of these structures requires one of the most complex formulations in continuum mechanics, shell theory [4]. Moreover, there has not yet been any work reported to produce visually convincing animation of them while achieving real-time performance. Motivated by discrete shells [5] and modal warping [3], we formulate dynamics of thin shells using mass-spring models instead of finite element models, and then apply the modal warping technique to cope with large rotational deformation of thin shells. Experiments show that the proposed technique runs in real-time, and that it can simulate large bending and/or twisting deformations with acceptable realism.

  • Systems for physically based fluid animation have developed rapidly in the visual special effects industry and can make very high quality images. However, in the real-time application fields such as computer game, the simulation speed is more critical issue than image quality. This paper presents a real-time method for animating fluid using programmable graphics pipeline. We show that once two key-frames are given, the technique can interactively generate a sequence of images changing from the source key-frame to the target.

  • This paper proposes a real-time technique for simulating large rotational deformations. Modal analysis based on a linear strain tensor has been shown to be suitable for real-time simulation, but is accurate only for moderately small deformations. In the present work, we identify the rotational component of an infinitesimal deformation, and extend linear modal analysis to track that component. We then develop a procedure to integrate the small rotations occurring al the nodal points. An interesting feature of our formulation is that it can implement both position and orientation constraints in a straightforward manner. These constraints can be used to interactively manipulate the shape of a deformable solid by dragging/twisting a set of nodes, Experiments show that the proposed technique runs in real-time even for a complex model, and that it can simulate large bending and/or twisting deformations with acceptable realism.
