  • One of the biggest drawbacks of online education using virtual environments is that teachers cannot see students' facial expressions. In offline classes, teachers usually observe students' expressions to determine if they are focused or enjoying the lesson, and they can adjust their teaching accordingly. For example, if a teacher notices that students are losing focus, they can slow down the pace of the lesson or tell an interesting story to regain their attention. However, in a virtual environment, it is impossible to see students' expressions, making it difficult to gather any information about them. As a result, instructors may feel like they are teaching in isolation and are unable to appropriately respond to students' reactions. This can easily lead to a lack of interaction between the teacher and students. This issue has already been raised in other studies, and research has been conducted to measure student engagement and attention. However, existing systems typically measure overall engagement for the entire class or represent the data in numbers or graphs, which doesn't provide impactful real-time feedback to the instructor. This study proposes an online education system that visually displays each student's level of engagement and attention in real time to address this issue. The key advantage of this system is that it allows teachers to quickly and intuitively grasp students' reactions and adjust their teaching in real time accordingly.

  • The monitoring and abnormality warning of marine diesel engine are important to take appropriate responses for safety navigation. If maintenance engineers do not take appropriate response because of diagnosis mistakes, it will occur a nasty accident. Therefore, we need integrated monitoring and diagnosis system for supporting a diagnosis objectively. In this paper, we analyze time-series data which measured by real-time, monitor the changing of conditions and trends of the analyzed data. Furthermore, we design and implement a monitoring and diagnosis system for objective supporting of real-time diagnosis. When the integrated monitoring and diagnosis system is adopted, it can help to improve stability of marine diesel engine by providing abnormality warning alarm with appropriate responses.

  • Recently, development and application of the condition monitoring and diagnostic system for improvement of durability and reliability and reduction of operating cost is generalized in the aircraft propulsion system. Especially, for reliable operation of the UAV which is flying in high altitude more than 40,000 ft for a long time an condition monitoring system to identify faults and degradations of its propulsion system should be needed. Therefore, this work proposes an on-line condition monitoring program using MATLAB/SIMULINK. In the development phase of the program, a engine signal generation module is used to simulate real engine measuring parameters instead of the real engine. The proposed on-line condition monitoring program was applied to a real turboprop engine to validate its application capability.

  • Recently, the information appliance devices integrating information technology, appliance technology, and communication technology are appeared in home. And this environment requires that the monitoring technology should include the interaction and the real-time controlling among these devices using home network. In this paper, we implemented the active objects for information appliances by applying the Time-triggered Message-triggered Object(TMO) scheme supporting real-time service. Based on distributed real-time services supporting platform using the TMO Support Middleware(TMOSM), we also constructed the real-time information appliance controlling simulator supporting the remote controlling and monitoring service among active objects. The information appliance devices implemented by the TMO scheme can exchange the housing information by autonomous triggering. And we can conveniently reconfigure the executing environment for information appliances when new devices were inserted. For constructing the simulator on the distributed real-time service supporting platform, we described the functions of the active TMOs for information appliances that execute the temperature management, the illuminance management, and the time management controlling services, and designed the remote interaction among them. Finally, by implementing the simulating environment of information appliance devices on distributed platform, we showed whether the procedures of the real-time controlling and the monitoring service for the active objects of information appliances corresponding to physical devices are processed in given executing conditions correctly.

  • Spatiotemporal changes of brain rhythmic activity at a certain frequency have been usually monitored in real time using scalp potential maps of multi-channel electroencephalography(EEG) or magnetic field maps of magnetoencephalography(MEG). In the present study, we investigate if it is possible to implement a real-time brain activity monitoring system which can monitor spatiotemporal changes of cortical rhythmic activity on a subject's cortical surface, neither on a sensor plane nor on a standard brain model, with a high temporal resolution. In the suggested system, a frequency domain inverse operator is preliminarily constructed, considering the individual subject's anatomical information, noise level, and sensor configurations. Spectral current power at each cortical vertex is then calculated for the Fourier transforms of successive sections of continuous data, when a single frequency or particular frequency band is given. An offline study which perfectly simulated the suggested system demonstrates that cortical rhythmic source changes can be monitored at the cortical level with a maximal delay time of about 200 ms, when 18 channel EEG data are analyzed under Pentium4 3.4GHz environment. Two sets of artifact-free, eye closed, resting EEG data acquired from a dementia patient and a normal male subject were used to show the feasibility of the suggested system. Factors influencing the computational delay are investigated and possible applications of the system are discussed as well.

  • Bolted joint connection is the most commonly used connection element in structures and devices. The loosening due to external dynamic loads cannot be observed and measured easily and may cause catastrophic loss especially in an extreme requirement and/or environment. In this paper, an innovative Real-time Cross-Correlation Method (RCCM) for monitoring of the bolted joint loosening was proposed. We apply time reversal process on stress wave propagation to obtain correlation signal. The correlation signal's peak amplitude represents the cross-correlation between the loosening state and the baseline working state; therefore, it can detect the state of loosening. Since the bolt states are uncorrelated with noise, the peak amplitude will not be affected by noise and disturbance while it increases SNR level and increases the measured signals' reliability. The correlation process is carried out online through physical wave propagation without any other post offline complicated analyses and calculations. We implemented the proposed RCCM on a single bolt/nut joint experimental device to quantitatively detect the loosening states successfully. After that we implemented the proposed method on a real large structure (reaction wall) with multiple bolted joint connections. Loosening indexes were built for both experiments to indicate the loosening states. Finally, we demonstrated the proposed method's great anti-noise and/or disturbance ability. In the instrumentation, we simply mounted Lead Zirconium Titanate (PZT) patches on the device/structure surface without any modifications of the bolted connection. The low-cost PZTs used as actuators and sensors for active sensing are easily extended to a sensing network for large scale bolted joint network monitoring.

  • Because worldwide interest in the health is increased, the real-time health monitoring system has been demanded to be more convenient non-contact and precise medical devices than conventional. Therefore we developed the blood pressure monitoring system using UWB(Ultra Wide Band) radio wave which contact to the human body through the radar and continuously collect a movement signal of the blood vessel. Then the collected data including pulse rate, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure is processed in real time. The system monitors and controls through a program-based embedded LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) using Qt GUI(Graphic User Interface) to be displayed in real time. We implement the system as a embedded system because of reducing the size of the limited resources. Existing PC GUI design mode is used relatively large memory, therefore it requires more CPU(Central Processing Unit) capacity and processing time.

  • For the purpose of monitoring the abnormal state in proportion to cutting in automatic production process, the 3 kinds of specimens different from mechanical properties by austempering through temperature variation were manufactured, and the effects of tool wear on thrust and AE RMS was analyzed with sequential drilling in in-process. When the ADI specimens were drilled, the relationship of thrust and AE RMS with flank wear was studied through experiments, and it is confirmed that the reliable wear state is able to be monitored by using these signals. It was shown that thrust and AE RMS increased slowly till flank wear reached to V$_{B}$ = 0.25mm, and they increased steeply over the value. The effective tool exchange time was able to be pre-estimated by using this fact. It was validated that the tool breakage was able to be detected on the real time by monitoring in in-process.s.

  • Recently, an advanced video deflectometer based on the principle of off-axis digital image correlation was presented and advocated for remote and real-time deflection monitoring of large engineering structures. In engineering practice, measurement accuracy is one of the most important technical indicators of the video deflectometer. However, it has been observed in many outdoor experiments that data drift often presents in the measured deflection-time curves, which is caused by the instability of imaging system and the unavoidable influences of ambient interferences (e.g., ambient light changes, ambient temperature variations as well as ambient vibrations) in non-laboratory conditions. The non-ideal unstable imaging conditions seriously deteriorate the measurement accuracy of the video deflectometer. In this work, to perform high-accuracy deflection monitoring, potential sources for the drift error are analyzed, and a drift error model is established by considering these error sources. Based on this model, a simple, easy-to-implement yet effective reference point compensation method is proposed for real-time removal of the drift error in measured deflections. The practicality and effectiveness of the proposed method are demonstrated by in-situ deflection monitoring of railway and highway bridges.

  • As the power plant industry has been changed into competition structure, power generation companies do more with less by increasing capacity and lowering operation costs. In order to achieve this goals, an on-line real-time performance monitoring system has been needed to introduced to fossil power plant. The system represents a suite of related software modules which consist of on-line data, and on-line performance modules. This system can help the plant staff get the most out of their facilities by continuously monitoring deviations in equipment performance and the impact on those deviations on plant power, heat rate and operating cost. This paper shows the comparison of design value with acceptance test and current(measured) value.
