  • The purpose of present study is to investigate children's attitude toward reading, reading method, reading environment, reading volume, and then to compare the results obtained by sex, area and grade. The tool used in this survey was a questionaire designed specially by the investigator. The questionaire was distributed to 1339 children selected at the descretion of the investigator with due consideration of sex, area(large city, medium city and rural community) and grade (from 2nd grade of primary school to 2nd year of middle school). The results of this study are summerized as follows : 1) Regional difference was observed in respect of the followiug : Awareness on reading, motivation for reading, reading method, activity after reading, number of books collected, reading guidance, how to obtain books to read, monthly reading volume, and reading tendency. 2) Also difference by grade was observed in respcet of the following ; Activity after reading, reading guidance, monthly reading volume and reading tendency. The following conclusions have been made based on the results of the survey: 1) The children's attitude toward reading and reading method may be considered favorable while reading environment is not satisfactory yet. Especially, reading environment of school children in medium cities and rural communities is worse than that of large cities. 2) No difference by sex was observed in respect of attitudes toward reading, reading method, reading environment and reading volume while difference by sex was observed in respect of reading tendency. The followings are recommended based on the results of survey: 1) To establish and carry out a comprehensive program for the improvement of reading environment of the school children in medium cities and rural communities. 2) To improve and substantiate school library facilities and design a proper guidance program to have children utilize school library to the maximum extent. 3) To contemplate on the consolidated measures for reading behavior survey.

  • Because the educational significance of reading activities for growing children is so great, the importance of reading cannot be overemphasized. While the reading volume of elementary school students in Korea is very high, as they go up to middle school, the reading volume falls rapidly. This study examined a more effective way to resolve this middle school reduction in reading volume. Middle school freshmen were surveyed on their reading habits and preferences in the sixth grade of elementary school, after which the groups were divided into two groups based on their averages; groups with high/low reading habits and groups with high/low reading preferences). Participants also wrote reading reports for six weeks, kept a record of the days of the week they read for more than 20 minutes, and noted down the time they read in minutes. It was found that 75% of participants did not read one book a week when in the sixth grade of elementary school and it was confirmed that reading many books and liking to read were elements that had different dimensions. For example, about 35% of the participants said they liked books but rarely read them. It was also confirmed that the reading habits formed in elementary school were a strong variable that affected the number of days that and the reading time of middle school students rather than the reading preferences formed in elementary school. This study concluded that a subjective attitude toward reading and actually reading were completely different problems, which suggested that 'habits' could have a greater influence than 'preferences' when performing tasks to achieve goals.

  • The objective of the current study is to explore psychological factors that can encourage elementary school students to read. Specifically, the current study verified the effect of manipulating the construal level, which is known to influence goal achievement, on the reading volume of the students. Two hundred elementary school students were separated into groups with high and low preferences for reading, as well as those with high and low reading volumes in general. Then, the study proceeded to categorize the students into the abstract construal-level group who were directed to think about why they have to read and the concrete construal-level group who were directed to think about how they should read. The participants were asked to read for two weeks, and their reading volume and reported pleasure of reading were measured. As a result, the study confirmed the main effect of the construal level, in that the group of students who were directed to have a concrete perspective about their reading objective by thinking about how to read had a higher reading volume than the group directed to have an abstract perspective about their reading objective. In addition, the group that generally had a lower-level preference for reading both read more and enjoyed reading more after it was directed to construe the reading activity concretely. However, the group that generally had a higher level of preference for reading maintained high reading volumes and high pleasure of reading regardless of the construal level. Furthermore, the group that generally read less both read more and enjoyed reading more after it was directed to construe reading concretely. However the group that generally read more also enjoyed reading more after it was directed to construe reading abstractly. The current study is significant in that it expands the discussion about the effect of construal level, which had been mainly a subject of behavioral economic research, into the field of educational instruction. The study also provides a practical implication for the types of perspective that are effective in motivating people with a higher or lower preference for certain tasks, as well as those with higher or lower levels of achievement for certain tasks.

  • The study is about the influence of literal, symbolic and graphics languages on mathematics reading. The results show that the scores of symbolic language volume are significantly lower than that of literal language volume. The abstractness of the mathematical symbols will not have a significant impact on the students with excellent mathematical academic, but as for the medium and poor students, abstract mathematics symbols will cause their cognitive impairment. Due to picture-superiority-effect, the test scores of the graphics language volume are significantly higher than that of the symbolic language volume. Graphics language will have a significant impact on the excellent and medium students, but has no impact on the poor students.

  • A speckle pattern from an optical fiber is used for a reference beam in writing and reading a volume hologram. The photorefractive volume hologram with this scheme shows good spatial selectivity for spatial(shift) multiplexing because the speckle pattern in writing and reading a hologram looses correlation with a small spatial shift. This scheme has the insensitivity to axial movement. The data storage system with this scheme will have a high storage density and a good stability in operation. We theoretically analyze the diffracted beam from a volume hologram recorded with the speckle pattern from the optical fiber. Experimental results are presented and compared with numerical analysis.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between reading attitude, reading amount, and personality type of college students, and to prepare a plan to improve the reading rate. As a result of the study, Reading attitudes have been shown to affect reading volume, paper book reading amount, personal reading amount, and e-book reading amount. In the personality type, openness has had a positive impact on reading and reading attitudes. On the other hand, the attention was negatively affecting the reading amount and the reading attitude, except for the amount of e-book reading. The implications derived from this are as follows. First, college students need a library environment and a library environment that can read books that can read books. Second, in order to increase the reading amount of extraversion, it is necessary to conduct dynamic reading activities in the center of the activity and conduct a local reading club activity linked to community activities.

  • In terms of water meter reading, the majority of 16 million houses use mechanical water meter in korea. So, a member of the utility's staff needs to access periodically the water meter and the value of the metered volume. However, due to the use of mechanical water meter, many issues have been appeared as cost, time, errors, accessibility, and readability. To settle these issues, we developed the walk-by meter reading system of digital water meter and outside indicator based on ubiquitous. And we could get the characteristics and the economical efficiency for water meter reading system. Thus, this study shows that the system can be widely used to the block system and the meter reading system for stable water supply.

  • This study investigated both elementary and middle school students' abilities of reading scales and students' conceptions of measuring instruments and units. Seventy two students with 5th grade, sixty nine students with 7th grade, and eighty students with 9th grade were participated. Performance tests and written questionnaires were used. To assess their scale reading abilities, individual performance test was used. Every student should measure length of an envelope, temperature of water, volume of water, etc. And to find out students' conceptions related with measuring instruments and units, written questionnaires with pictures and photographs were used. Some of the students' abilities of reading scales were considerably poor. The results of a two-plate-balance and measuring-cylinder were worse than those of a ruler, a spring-balance, and a thermometer. Many of the students had misconceptions related with measuring instruments. Some of them did not know exactly the meaning of volume, or mass, or force. So they did not know what to measure with the measuring instruments. Also students were confused with several units of volume, force, weight and mass.
