The paper concerns with the method and results of wind tunnel investigations of the Strouhal number (St) of a stationary iced cable model of cable-supported bridges with respect to different angles of wind attack. The investigations were conducted in the Climatic Wind Tunnel Laboratory of the Czech Academy of Sciences in $Tel{\check{c}}$. The methodology leading to the experimental icing of the inclined cable model was prepared in a climatic section of the laboratory. The shape of the ice on the cable was registered by a photogrammetry method. A section of an iced cable model with a smaller scale was reproduced with a 3D printing procedure for subsequent aerodynamic investigations. The St values were determined within the range of the Reynolds number (Re) between $2.4{\cdot}10^4$ and $16.5{\cdot}10^4$, based on the dominant vortex shedding frequencies measured in the wake of the model. The model was oriented at three principal angles of wind attack for each of selected Re values. The flow regimes were distinguished for each model configuration. In order to recognize the tunnel blockage effect the St of a circular smooth cylinder was also tested. Good agreement with the reported values in the subcritical Re range of a circular cylinder was obtained. The knowledge of the flow regimes of the airflow around an iced cable and the associated St values could constitute a basis to formulate a mathematical description of the vortex-induced force acting on the iced cable of a cable-supported bridge and could allow predicting the cable response due to the vortex excitation phenomenon.

Investigating Backward-Facing Step(BFS) flow is important in that it is a representative case for separation flows in various engineering flow systems. There have been a wide range of experimental, theoretical, and numerical studies to investigate the flow characteristics over BFS, such as flow separation, reattachment length and recirculation zone. However, most of such previous studies were concentrated only on the perpendicular step angle. In this study, several numerical investigations on the flow pattern over BFS with various step angles (10° ~ 90°) and expansion ratios (1.48, 2 and 3.27) under different Reynolds numbers (5000 ~ 64000) were carried out, mainly focused on the reattachment length. The numerical simulations were performed using an open source 3D CFD software, OpenFOAM, in which the velocity profiles and turbulence intensities are calculated by RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation) and 3D LES (Large Eddy Simulation) turbulence models. Overall, it shows a good agreement between simulations and the experimental data by Ruck and Makiola (1993). In comparison with the results obtained from RANS and 3D LES, it was shown that 3D LES model can capture much better and more details on the velocity profiles, turbulence intensities, and reattachment length behind the step for relatively low Reynolds number(Re < 11000) cases. However, the simulation results by both of RANS and 3D LES showed very good agreement with the experimental data for the high Reynolds number cases(Re > 11000). For Re > 11000, the reattachment length is no longer dependent on the Reynolds number, and it tends to be nearly constant for the step angles larger than 30°.) Based on the calibrated and validated numerical simulations, several additional numerical simulations were also conducted with higher Reynolds number and another expansion ratio which were not considered in the experiments by Ruck and Makiola (1993).
It has been well known that the Grad thirteen-moment equations have solutions only when the Mach number is less than a limiting value for the stationary plane shock-waves. The limit of Mach number has been re-examined by including successive terms in the series expansion of distribution function. The method employed is the linear analysis of moment equations near up-streaming and down-streaming flows. For the thirteen moment case, it has been confirmed that equations have solutions only when the Mach number is less than 1.6503, which is consistent with the literature value. For the case of twenty moments, the limit of Mach number is decreased to 1.3416.
Distribution system loss minimization re-configuration is 0-1 planning problem, and the number of combinations requiring searches is extremely large when dealing with typical system scales. For this reason, the application of a genetic algorithm (GA) seems attactive to solve this problem. Although Genetic algorithms are a type of random number search method, they incorporate a multi-point search feature and are therefore superior to one-point search techniques. The efficiency of GAs for solving large combinational problem has received wide attention. Further, parallel searching can be performed and the optimal solution is more easily reached. In this paper, for improving GA convergence characteristics in the distribution system loss minimization re-configeration problem, a chromosome "Limited Life" concept is intro duced. Briefly, considering the population homogenization and genetic drift problems, natural selection is achieved by providing this new concept, in addition to natural selection by fitness. This is possible because individuals in a population have an age value. Simulations were carried out using a model system to check this method's validity.

In this study a phase diagram has been used to investigate the unsteadiness of two-dimensional lid-driven closed flows within a square cavity for twelve Reynolds numbers; $7.5{\times}10^3,\; 8{\times}10^3,\; 8.5{\times}10^3,\; 9{\times}10^3,\; 9.5{\times}10^3,\; 10^4,\;1.5{\times}10^4,\;2{\times}10^4,\; 3{\times}10^4,\; 7.5{\times}10^4$ and $10^5$. The results indicate that the first critical Reynolds number at which the flow unsteadiness of sinusoidal fluctuation appears from the temporal variation of total kinetic energy curves is assumed of sinusoidal fluctuation appears form the temporal variation of total kinetic energy curves is assumed to be in the neigh-bourhood of $Re=8.5{\times}10^3$ The second critical Reynolds number where the periodic amplitude and frequency collapse to random disturbance being existed around $Re=1.5{\times}10^4$ The exponentially decreasing vortices formed at the lower two corners are found commonly at the time-mean flow pattern of $Re=3{\times}10^4$.
In a wind tunnel experiment employing a reduced scale model, Reynolds number (Re) can hardly be respected. Its effects on the aerodynamics of closed-box bridge decks have been the subject of research in recent years. Stonecutters Bridge in Hong Kong is a cable-stayed bridge having an unprecedented central span of 1018m. The issue of Re sensitivity was raised early in the design phase of the deck of Stonecutters Bridge. The objective of this study is to summarise the results of various wind tunnel experiments in order to demonstrate the effect of Re on the steady state aerodynamic force coefficients. The results may provide an insight on the choice of scale for section model experiments in bridge design projects. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of forces on bridge deck section was also carried out to see how CFD results are compared with experimental results.

Multi-hop networks are a low-setup-cost solution for enlarging an area of network coverage through multi-hop routing. Carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) is frequently used in multi-hop networks. Multi-hop networks face multiple problems, such as a rise in contention for the medium, and packet loss under heavy-load, saturated conditions, which consumes more bandwidth due to re-transmissions. The number of re-transmissions carried out in a multi-hop network plays a major role in the achievable quality of service (QoS). This paper presents a statistical, analytical model for the end-to-end delay of contention-based medium access control (MAC) strategies. These strategies schedule a packet before performing the back-off contention for both differentiated heterogeneous data and homogeneous data under saturation conditions. The analytical model is an application of Markov chain theory and queuing theory. The M/M/1 model is used to derive access queue waiting times, and an absorbing Markov chain is used to determine the expected number of re-transmissions in a multi-hop scenario. This is then used to calculate the expected end-to-end delay. The prediction by the proposed model is compared to the simulation results, and shows close correlation for the different test cases with different arrival rates.
This paper presents a new method which applies a genetic algorithm(GA) for determining which sectionalizing switch to operate in order to solve the distribution system loss minimization re-configuration problem. The distribution system loss minimization re-configuration problem is in essence a 0-1 planning problem which means that for typical system scales the number of combinations requiring searches becomes extremely large. In order to deal with this problem, a new approach which applies a GA was presented. Briefly, GA are a type of random number search method, however, they incorporate a multi-point search feature. Further, every point is not is not separately and respectively renewed, therefore, if parallel processing is applied, we can expect a fast solution algorithm to result.

Among the approaches to image database management, content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is viewed as having the best support for effective searching and browsing of large digital image libraries. Typical CBIR systems allow a user to provide a query image, from which low-level features are extracted and used to find 'similar' images in a database. However, there exists the semantic gap between human visual perception and low-level representations. An effective methodology for overcoming this semantic gap involves relevance feedback to perform feature re-weighting. Current approaches to feature re-weighting require the number of components for a feature representation to be the same for every image in consideration. Following this assumption, they map each component to an axis in the n-dimensional space, which we call the metric space; likewise the feature representation is stored in a fixed-length vector. However, with the emergence of features that do not have a fixed number of components in their representation, existing feature re-weighting approaches are invalidated. In this paper we propose a feature re-weighting technique that supports features regardless of whether or not they can be mapped into a metric space. Our approach analyses the feature distances calculated between the query image and the images in the database. Two-sided confidence intervals are used with the distances to obtain the information for feature re-weighting. There is no restriction on how the distances are calculated for each feature. This provides freedom for how feature representations are structured, i.e. there is no requirement for features to be represented in fixed-length vectors or metric space. Our experimental results show the effectiveness of our approach and in a comparison with other work, we can see how it outperforms previous work.
In this paper, a stabilized large eddy simulation technique is developed to predict turbulent flow with high Reynolds number. Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) stabilized method and three-step technique are both implemented for the finite element formulation of Smagorinsky sub-grid scale (SGS) model. Temporal discretization is performed using three-step technique with viscous term treated implicitly. And the pressure is computed from Poisson equation derived from the incompressible condition. Then two numerical examples of turbulent flow with high Reynolds number are discussed. One is lid driven flow at Re = $10^5$ in a triangular cavity, the other is turbulent flow past a square cylinder at Re = 22000. Results show that the present technique can effectively suppress the instabilities of turbulent flow caused by traditional FEM and well predict the unsteady flow even with coarse mesh.
