  • This study investigated the effects of steaming on the antioxidative activities of ray hydrolysates in vitro. Based on the results of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, steamed ray hydrolysate possessed significantly higher antioxidative activities than raw ray hydrolysates (p<0.05). The 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity of steamed ray hydrolysate by pancreatin was slightly lower than raw ray hydrolysate at all concentrations. Raw ray hydrolysate displayed moderate hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, while steamed ray hydrolysate showed a greater increase in hydroxyl radical scavenging activity than raw ray hydrolysate at concentrations above 21.33 mg/mL, and it reached 58.21% at 42.67 mg/mL. The results of this study show that ray hydrolysates have potent free radical scavenging activities and reducing power, and the steaming has a partial impact on the antioxidative activity of ray hydrolysates.

  • The explosion of a nuclear weapon radiates a gamma-ray in the form of a transient pulse. If the gamma-ray introduces to semiconductor devices, much Electron-Hole Pairs(EHPs) are generated in depletion region of the devices[7]. as a consequence of that, high photocurrent is created and causes upset, latchup and burnout of semiconductor devices[8]. This phenomenon is known for Transient Radiation Effects on Electronics(TREE), also called dose-rate effects. In this paper 3D structure of inverter and NAND gate device was designed and transient pulse gamma-ray was modeled. So simulation for transient radiation effect on inverter and NAND gate was accomplished and mechanism for upset and latchup was analyzed.

  • Muons and neutrons are representative secondary particles that are generated by interactions between primary cosmic ray particles (mostly protons) and the nuclei of atmospheric gas compounds. Previous studies reported that muons experience seasonal variations because of the meteorological effects of temperature. The intensity of neutrons has a typical modulation with various periods and reasons, such as diurnal and solar variation or transient events. This paper reports that cosmic ray particles, which were observed by neutron monitors, have seasonal variations using the daily data at the Oulu neutron monitor. To eliminate the effects of solar activity across time, the daily data were normalized by two different transformations: transformations with respect to the grand mean and yearly mean. The data after transformation with respect to the yearly mean showed more statistical stability and clear seasonal variations. On the other hand, it is difficult to determine if the seasonal variation results from terrestrial effects, such as meteorological factors, or extraterrestrial effects, such as the position of the Earth in its orbit of revolution.

  • Background: Gamma-ray detectors having a thin window of a material with low atomic number can increase the true coincidence summing effects for radionuclides emitting X-rays or gamma-rays. This effect can make efficiency calibration or spectrum analysis more complicated. In this study, a Cu shield was tested as an X-ray filter to neglect the true coincidence summing effect by X-rays and gamma-rays in gamma-ray spectrometry, in order to simplify gamma-ray energy spectrum analysis. Materials and Methods: A Cu shield was designed and applied to an n-type high-purity germanium detector having an $X-{\gamma}$ summing effect during efficiency calibration. This was tested using a commercial, certified mixed gamma-ray source. The feasibility of a Cu shield was evaluated by comparing efficiency calibration results with and without the shield. Results and Discussion: In this study, the thickness of a Cu shield needed to avoid true coincidence summing effects due to $X-{\gamma}$ was tested and determined to be 1 mm, considering the detection efficiency desired for higher energy. As a result, the accuracy of the detection efficiency calibration was improved by more than 13% by reducing $X-{\gamma}$ summing. Conclusion: The $X-{\gamma}$ summing effect should be considered, along with ${\gamma}-{\gamma}$ summing, when a detection efficiency calibration is implemented and appropriate shielding material can be useful for simplifying analysis of the gamma-ray energy spectra.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate radurization effects of gamma ray and electron beam irradiation at 1.5 and 3.0 kGy on beef steaks during 8 days of storage at 5$^{\circ}C$. Total bacteria count, psychrotrophs, mesophiles and thermophiles were analyzed at 2 days intervals. Nonirradiated beef steak was used a scontrol Total bacteria counts, psychrotrophs, mesophiles and thermophiles of the control samples showed 3.03∼4.72 logCFU / g at 0 day and increased to 7.67∼10.90 logCFU / g during 8 days storage except thermophiles. Total bacteria counts, psychrotrophs and mesophiles of beef steaks at 8 days were significantly (p<0.05) decreased to 3.61∼5.43 logCFU / g by gamma ray and to 3.83∼7.02 logCFU / g by electron beam irradiation at 1.5 and 3.0 kGy. Thermophiles of all irradiated samples at any dose were not detectable through 8 days storage. These results suggested that both gamma ray and electron beam irradiation were effective to extend lag phase of bacterial growth of refrigerated beef. Gamma ray irradiation was better than electron beam irradiation in terms of radurization effects of beef.

  • The $\gamma$-ray irradiation and aging effects on electrical characteristics of $^{60}Co$ $\gamma$-ray irradiated ethylene-propylene-diene-terpolymer(EPDM) contained with 1 to 3phr phenolic and quinolinic antioxidants as antirads were investigated. The marked effects of type and amounts of the antioxidant on the volume resistivity and AC breakdown strength of the $\gamma$-ray irradiated EPDM are different. A phenolic antioxidant(IR 1010) contribute to improving the electrical insulation properties on the EPDM better than quinolinic antioxidant(Kumanox RD) during irradiation. In aging the irradiated EPDM specimens contained antioxidants at room temperature in air, it was shown a improvement of insulation properties due to radical scavenging and crosslinking of EPDM aged until 360 days.

  • The present study covers an integrated simulation method to evaluate optical performance of an aspheric plastic lens by connecting an injection molding analysis with a ray tracing simulation. Traditional ray tracing methods have based on the assumption that the optical properties of a lens are homogeneous throughout the entire volume. This assumption is to a certain extent unrealistic for injection-molded plastic lenses because material properties vary at every point due to the injection molding effects. To take into account the effects of the inhomogeneous optical properties of the molded lens, a numerical scheme is developed to calculate the distribution of refractive index induced from the injection molding process. This index distribution is then reflected onto CODE $V^{(R)}$ simulation and used to calculate ray paths in inhomogeneous media. The proposed tracing scheme is implemented on the tracing of an aspheric lens for a mobile phone camera module.

  • For the purpose of improving hygienic quality of health-foods, sterilization effects of ${\gamma}$-ray and ozone on microoganisms associated with food cultured in the media and contaminated in Angelica keiskei powder were investigated. Ozone was immersed in water and sprayed in air, on the concentration of 3 mg liter-1 at an air flow rate of 5 liter min-3. Test strains cultured in the media completely inhibited by ${\gamma}$-ray at irradiation doses of 0.25~2 kGy. In the case of ozone, test bacteria inactivated after treatment of 10~20 minutes, but test mold, Aspergillus flavus was not effective. Strains contaminated in Angelica keiskei powder completely inhibited by ${\gamma}$-ray at irradiation doses of 2.5~7.5 kGy. However, when the powder was sprayed with ozonized air for 10hours, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus among five strains were eliminated.

  • The effects of the various amount of $CeO_2$ $MnO_2$ and $Fe_2O_3$ added to the high lead-silicate glasses on the X-ray induced coloration were studied. The light transmissions and chromaticities of the glasses before and after exposing to X-ray radiation were measured to investigate the effects by additivies. The results are as follows ; 1. High lead-silicate glass added $CeO_2$ or $MnO_2$ has a little effect on the transmission but has a considerable effect on the chromaticity. The chromaticies of 56.6wt% PbO content glasses were changed as 3-7 times as those of 28.3wt% PbO content glasses. 2. By the X-ray irradiation glasses containing 0.2-0.5wt% $CeO_2$ were changed the least in chromaticity that is the most effective in preventing the X-ray induced coloration. 3. By X-ray irradiation $MnO_2$ reduced the transmissions and showed purple coloration. 4. Transmission change amounts of the glasses added $CeO_2$ and $Fe_2O_3$ were less than those of the glasses added $CeO_2$ alone by X-ray irradiation.
