  • In this paper, we propose a hybrid filter for noise reduction. The proposed method adjusts rational filtering direction according to an edge in the image using median filtered data. Rational filter modulates the coefficients of a linear lowpass filter to limit its action in presence of image details. By the ratio of polynomials in the input variables, rational filter reduces noise adaptively. Median filter is widely used to reduce impulse noise, but removes some details for highly corrupted images. Also, desirable details are removed when the window size is large. Our proposed algorithm combines rational filter and median filter. Thus, proposed method not only preserves edge, but also reduces noise in uniform region. Experimental results show that our proposed method has better quality than those by existing median and rational filtering methods.

  • In this paper, we propose a method of edge detection for noisy image. The proposed method uses a progressive filter for noise reduction and a Sobel operator for edge detection. The progressive filter combines a median filter and a modified rational filter. The proposed method for noise reduction adjusts rational filter direction according to an edge in the image which is obtained by median filtering. Our method effectively attenuates the noise while preserving the image details. Edge detection is performed by a Sobel operator. This operator can be implemented by integer operation and is therefore relatively fast. Our proposed method not only preserves edge, but also reduces noise in uniform region. Thus, edge detection is well performed. Our proposed method could improve results using further developed Sobel operator. Experimental results show that our proposed method has better edge detection with correct positions than those by existing median and rational filtering methods for noisy image.

  • The objective of this investigation is to compare the geometric precision of Rigorous Sensor Model and Rational Function Model for QuickBird images. In rigorous sensor model, we use the on-board data and ground control points to fit an orbit; then, a least squares filtering technique is applied to collocate the orbit. In rational function model, we first use the rational polynomial coefficients provided by the satellite company. Then the systematic bias of the coefficients is compensated by an affine transformation using ground control points. Experimental results indicate that, the RFM provides a good approximation in the position accuracy.

  • A 2-D digital filter with rational frequency response can be expanded into an infinite sequence of filterins operations. Each filtering operation can be implemented by convolution with a Low-order 20D finite-extent impulse response. If a convergence constraint is satisfied, the sequence of estimates will approach the desired output signal. In practice, as the number of iterations is finite, the frequency response implemented by iterative computations is an approximation to the desired rational frequency response.

  • The acoustic parabolic equation method in the ocean is an efficient technique to calculate the acoustic field in the range-dependent environment, emanating from a point source. However, we often need to use the directional source with a main beam in the practical problem. In this paper, we present two methods to implement the directional source in the acoustic parabolic equation code easily. One is simply to filter the Delta function idealized as an omni-directional point source. Another method is based on the rational filtering of the self-starter solution. It has a limitation not to separate the up-going and the down-going wave for the depth, but would be useful in implementing the mode propagation. Numerical examples for validation are given in the Pekeris environment and the deep sea environment.

  • Effective monitoring, reliable data analysis, and rational data interpretations are challenges for engineers who are specialized in bridge health monitoring. This paper demonstrates how to use the Global Positioning System (GPS) and accelerometer data to accurately extract static and quasi-static displacements of the bridge induced by ambient effects. To eliminate the disadvantages of the two separate units, based on the characteristics of the bias terms derived from the GPS and accelerometer respectively, a wavelet based multi-step filtering method by combining the merits of the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) with the discrete stationary wavelet transform (SWT) is proposed so as to address the GPS deformation monitoring application more efficiently. The field measurements are carried out on an existing suspension bridge under the normal operation without any traffic interference. Experimental results showed that the frequencies and absolute displacements of the bridge can be accurate extracted by the proposed method. The integration of GPS and accelerometer can be used as a reliable tool to characterize the dynamic behavior of large structures such as suspension bridges undergoing environmental loads.

  • Realizations of multirate converters are proposed using periodically time-varying (PTV) structures. By exploiting the computational redundancy of the filtering operation in a multirate filter, it is possible to implement the filter with much less hardware. In the proposed implementations, several coefficients time-share in a periodic fashion the hardware of one multiply-and-add. Therefore, each multiply-and-add circuit performs different coefficient scalings at different time instants within a period. Compared to the direct form realization, the proposed realizations reduce the hardware of an interpolator and a decimator by a factor of approximately U and M, respectively, while retaining the same processing speed, where U and M are the upsampling and downsampling factors, respectively. The approach can be used to obtain realizations for sampling rate conversion by a rational factor of U/M, where U and M are relatively prime, in which case hardware reduction by a factor of approximately UM can be achieved.

  • The study presents the linear dynamic analysis of bridges under vehicular movement to examine the performance characteristics due to the various structural and loading conditions. The road surface roughness and bridge-vehicle interactions are considered. The road surface profiles for the approaching roadway and bridge decks are generated from power spectral density functions for different road roughness conditions. A new filtering method using the wheel trace is proposed to obtain the more rational bridge-vehicle interactions from the randomly generated road surface. The dynamic responses of various bridges designed according to current design practice are examined, in which important structural parameters(such as span length, girder spacing, etc.) are considering systematically. In addition, the traffic conditions of multi-truck traveling either consecutively on the same lane or side-by-side on the adjacent lanes are also evaluated.

  • A technique for fast image reduction or expansion, in which the reduction(expansion) factor is either any integer or any rational number M/L Is represented. The multiresolution is modeled as an interpolation and filtering followed by a decimation. The model enables frequency domain analysts of the muitiresolution representations as well as convenient design of the Kernels(filters). Using any rin linear phase(Type I) filters a fine to coarse multiresolution structure can be generated.

  • This study is daytime and nighttime runoff image data caused by heavy rain on May 27, 2013 at Oedo Water Treatment Plant of Oedo-Stream, Jeju to compute runoff by applying Surface image velocimeter (SIV) and analyzing correlation according to current. At the same time, current was comparatively analyzed using ADCP observation data and fixed electromagnetic surface current meter (Kalesto) observed at the runoff site. As a result of comparison on resolutions of daytime and nighttime runoff images collected, correlation coefficient corresponding to the range of 0.6~0.7 was 6.8% higher for nighttime runoff image compared to daytime runoff image. On the contrary, correlation coefficient corresponding to the range of 0.9~1.0 was 17% lower. This result implies that nighttime runoff image has lower image quality than daytime runoff image. In the process of computing current using SIV, a rational filtering process for correlation coefficient is needed according to images obtained.
