  • For a detailed investigation of the dynamic behaviour of slender bridges under wind action especially the motion-induced fluid forces should be available not only for harmonic motions but also for more general ones. If linear transfer behaviour is assumed, the force-displacement relation for almost arbitrary motions can be handled in the frequency domain using aerodynamic transfer functions. In aerospace engineering as well as in bridge engineering, these functions are usually approximated by special kinds of complex-valued rational functions which depend on complex frequencies. The quality of this approximation is evaluated for several bridge cross sections in this article. It is shown that rational functions are for some sections scarcely suitable to realistically represent the transfer behaviour of motion-induced aerodynamic forces for arbitrarily complex frequencies.

  • This paper uses a piecewise ratonal cubic interpolant to solve the problem of shape preserving interpolation for plane curves; scalar curves are also considered as a special case. The results derived here are actually the extensions of the convexity preserving results of Delbourgo and Gregory [Delbourgo and Gregory'85] who developed a $C^{1}$ shape preserving interpolation scheme for scalar curves using the same piecewise rational function. They derived the ocnstraints, on the shape parameters occuring in the rational function under discussion, to make the interpolant preserve the convex shape of the data. This paper begins with some preliminaries about the rational cubic interpolant. The constraints consistent with convex data, are derived in Sections 3. These constraints are dependent on the tangent vectors. The description of the tangent vectors, which are consistent and dependent on the given data, is made in Section 4. the convexity preserving results are explained with examples in Section 5.

  • A new numerical algorithm of finite element methods is presented to solve high Deborah number flow problems with geometric singularities. The steady inertialess planar 4 : 1 contraction flow is chosen for its test. As a viscoelastic constitutive equation, we have applied the globally stable (dissipative and Hadamard stable) Leonov model that can also properly accommodate important nonlinear viscoelastic phenomena. The streamline upwinding method with discrete elastic-viscous stress splitting is incorporated. New interpolation functions classified as rational interpolation, an alternative formalism to enhance numerical convergence at high Deborah number, are implemented not for the whole set of finite elements but for a few elements attached to the entrance comer, where stress singularity seems to exist. The rational interpolation scheme contains one arbitrary parameter b that controls the singular behavior of the rational functions, and its value is specified to yield the best stabilization effect. The new interpolation method raises the limit of Deborah number by 2∼5 times. Therefore on average, we can obtain convergent solution up to the Deborah number of 200 for which the comer vortex size reaches 1.6 times of the half width of the upstream reservoir. Examining spatial violation of the positive definiteness of the elastic strain tensor, we conjecture that the stabilization effect results from the peculiar behavior of rational functions identified as steep gradient on one domain boundary and linear slope on the other. Whereas the rational interpolation of both elastic strain and velocity distorts solutions significantly, it is shown that the variation of solutions incurred by rational interpolation only of the elastic strain is almost negligible. It is also verified that the rational interpolation deteriorates speed of convergence with respect to mesh refinement.

  • A complete invariant defined for (closed connected orientable) 3-manifolds is an invariant defined for the 3-manifolds such that any two 3-manifolds with the same invariant are homeomorphic. Further, if the 3-manifold itself can be reconstructed from the data of the complete invariant, then it is called a characteristic invariant defined for the 3-manifolds. In a previous work, a characteristic lattice point invariant defined for the 3-manifolds was constructed by using an embedding of the prime links into the set of lattice points. In this paper, a characteristic rational invariant defined for the 3-manifolds called the characteristic genus defined for the 3-manifolds is constructed by using an embedding of a set of lattice points called the PDelta set into the set of rational numbers. The characteristic genus defined for the 3-manifolds is also compared with the Heegaard genus, the bridge genus and the braid genus defined for the 3-manifolds. By using this characteristic rational invariant defined for the 3-manifolds, a smooth real function with the definition interval (-1, 1) called the characteristic genus function is constructed as a characteristic invariant defined for the 3-manifolds.

  • In this paper, the necessary and sufficient conditions for strict positive realness of the rational transfer functions directly from basic definitions in the frequency domain are studied. A new frequency domain approach is used to check if a rational transfer function is a strictly positive real or not. This approach is based on the Taylor expansion and the Maximum Modulus Principle which are the fundamental tools in the complex functions analysis. Four related common statements in the strict positive realness literature which is appeared in the control theory are discussed. The drawback of these common statements is analyzed through some counter examples. Moreover a new necessary condition for strict positive realness is obtained from high frequency behavior of the Nyquist diagram of the transfer function. Finally a more simplified and completed conditions for strict positive realness of single-input single-output linear time-invariant systems are presented based on the complex functions analysis approach.

  • This Paper Presents a Rational Function Model (RFM)-based image matching technique for IKONOS satellite imagery. This algorithm adopts the object-space approach and reduces the search space within the confined line-shaped area called the Piecewise Matching Line (PLM). Also, the detailed procedure of generating 3-D surface information using the Rational Function model Coefficients (RFCs) is introduced as an end-user point of view. As a result, the final generated Digital Elevation Model (DEM) using the proposed scheme shows a mean error of 2$\cdot$2 m and RMSE of 3$\cdot$8 m compared with that from 1:5000 digital map.

  • This paper presents an aeroelastic analysis procedure to highlight the influence of wind velocity on the structural damping and frequency of a long span cable-stayed bridge. Frequency dependent self-excited forces in terms of flutter derivatives are expressed as continuous functions using rational function approximation technique. The aeroelastically modified structural equation of motion is expressed in terms of frequency independent modal state-space parameters. The modal logarithmic dampings and frequencies corresponding to a particular wind speed are then determined from the eigen solution of the state matrix.

  • Rational function model (RFM) is a universal sensor model for remote sensing image restitution. It is able to substitute for models of all known sensors. In this paper, RFM generation by CCD linear image models is described in detail. A principle of RFM-based 3D reconstruction and its implementation in JX4 DPW is also described. Experiments using IKONOS and SPOT5 images are carried out on JX4 DPW. Results show that RFM generated is feasible for photogrammetric restitution of CCD linear images.

  • If one can find a control Lyapunov function (CLF) for a given nonlinear system, the control input stabilizing the system can be easily obtained. To find a CLF, the time derivative of an energy function should be negative definite. This procedure frequently requires a control input which is a rational function or includes an inverse function. The control input is not defined on the specific state-space where the denominator of the rational function is equal to 0 or the inverse function does not exist. In this region with singularities, the trajectory of the control system cannot be generated, which is one of the most important reasons why it is hard to make the origin of a nonlinear system be globally asymptotically stable. In this paper, we propose a smooth control law ensuring the globally asymptotic stability by means of cancelling the singularity in the control input.
