  • The purpose of this study is to examine negative IT performances produced by irrational fashion-mimic IT investments in firms. Since most studies have been carried out on the assumption of rational investment decisions, many of them have revealed positive investment process and performances in firms. However, fashion-mimic investments to follow the paths of market leaders rather than rational investment decisions have been of frequent occurrence in many firms. This study divided types of mimic investments into subgroups where one subgroup has fashion-mimic properties and the other subgroup retains rational-mimic properties. We compared differences in performance of these subgroups to investigate effects of irrational investments in IT projects. The results indicated that there are differences in performance between fashion-mimic and rational-mimic investments. Additional analysis also revealed differences in performance at the presence of CEO control in the case of fashion-mimic investment subgroup.

  • There may be two methods defining the rational exponent $a^{\frac{m}{n}}$ for any positive real number a. The one which is used in all korean highschool mathematics textbooks is to define it as $\sqrt[n]{a^m}$, that is $(a^m)^{\frac{1}{n}}$. The other is to define it as $(\sqrt[n]a)^m}$, that is $(a^{\frac{1}{n}})^m$. In this paper, we insist that the latter is more appropriate and universal, and that the contents of current textbooks on the definition of the rational exponent should be corrected.

  • This paper presents four incompatible but convergent Rational quadrilateral elements, two four-node elements (RQ4Z and RQ4B) and two five-node elements (RQ5Z and RQ5B). The difference between the so-called Rational Finite Element (Zhong and Zeng 1996) and the Free Formulation (Bergan and Nygard 1984) are discussed and compared. The importance of the mode completeness in these formulations is emphasized. Numerical results for several benchmark problems show the good performance of these elements. The two five-nodes elements RQ5Z and RQ5B, which can be viewed as complete quadratic mode elements (with seven stress modes), always give better results than the four nodes elements RQ4Z and RQ4B.

  • The priority order about a rational repair and reinforcement is generally decided by subjective decision of engineer. An appearance investigation by tunnel scanner that is widely used in foreign nation was carried out to decide about a rational repair and reinforcement through systematic and objective analysis in box and NATM tunnel. We have decided on the order of priority of an rational repair and reinforcement through the crack density analysis by span, distance and location with the result of tunnel scanner.

  • Recently, the amount of disposed construction materials like demolished concrete is growing fast and the shortage of natural concrete aggregates is becoming serious. Therefore, recycling of aggregates extracted from the demolished concrete is getting important and use of the recycled aggregates for concrete has been seriously considered. However, the use of the recycled aggregates even for low performance concretes is very limited because there are few rational standard evaluation criteria for recycled aggregates which should be different from that for natural aggregates. In this study, rational evaluation criteria for the recycled aggregates are proposed for their use as concrete aggregates. The study also shows that the performance for both the recycled aggregates and the recycled concrete manufactured with the recycled aggregates can be evaluated effectively according to water absorption ratio of recycled aggregates.

  • The problem of the computation of derivatives arises in various applications of rational Bezier curves. These applications sometimes require the computation of derivative on numerous points. Therefore, many researches have dealt with the representation for the computation of derivatives with the small computation error. This paper compares the performances of the representations for the derivative of rational Bezier curves in the performances. The performance is measured as computation requirements at the pre-processing stage and at the computation stage based on the theoretical derivation of computational bound as well as the experimental verification. Based on this measurement, this paper discusses which representation is preferable in different situations.

  • This paper uses a piecewise ratonal cubic interpolant to solve the problem of shape preserving interpolation for plane curves; scalar curves are also considered as a special case. The results derived here are actually the extensions of the convexity preserving results of Delbourgo and Gregory [Delbourgo and Gregory'85] who developed a $C^{1}$ shape preserving interpolation scheme for scalar curves using the same piecewise rational function. They derived the ocnstraints, on the shape parameters occuring in the rational function under discussion, to make the interpolant preserve the convex shape of the data. This paper begins with some preliminaries about the rational cubic interpolant. The constraints consistent with convex data, are derived in Sections 3. These constraints are dependent on the tangent vectors. The description of the tangent vectors, which are consistent and dependent on the given data, is made in Section 4. the convexity preserving results are explained with examples in Section 5.

  • This paper describes one method of reverse engineering that machines a free form shape without descriptive model. A portable five-axes 3D CMM was used to digitize point data from physical model. After approximation by rational B-spline curve from digitized point data of a geometric shape, a surface was constructed by the skinning method of the cross-sectional design technique. Since a surface patch was segmented by fifteen part, surface merging was also implemented to assure the surface boundary continuity. Finally, composite surface was transferred to commercial CAD/CAM system through IFES translation in order to machine the modeled geometric shape.

  • In this paper we characterize the isogonal and isotomic conjugates of conic. Every conic can be expressed by a quadratic rational B$\acute{e}$zier curve having control polygon $b_0b_1b_2$ with weight w > 0. We show that the isotomic conjugate of parabola and hyperbola with respect to ${\Delta}b_0b_1b_2$ is ellipse, and that the isotomic conjugate of ellipse with the weight $w={\frac{1}{2}}$ is identical. We also find all cases of the isogonal conjugate of conic with respect to ${\Delta}b_0b_1b_2$. Our characterizations are derived easily due to the expression of conic by the quadratic rational B$\acute{e}$ezier curve in standard form.

  • In this paper, we propose a method of edge detection for noisy image. The proposed method uses a progressive filter for noise reduction and a Sobel operator for edge detection. The progressive filter combines a median filter and a modified rational filter. The proposed method for noise reduction adjusts rational filter direction according to an edge in the image which is obtained by median filtering. Our method effectively attenuates the noise while preserving the image details. Edge detection is performed by a Sobel operator. This operator can be implemented by integer operation and is therefore relatively fast. Our proposed method not only preserves edge, but also reduces noise in uniform region. Thus, edge detection is well performed. Our proposed method could improve results using further developed Sobel operator. Experimental results show that our proposed method has better edge detection with correct positions than those by existing median and rational filtering methods for noisy image.
