  • We fabricated and tested a resistive type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) based on BSCCO-2212 bulk coils. Each bulk coils of the SFCL was designed to have the rated voltage of 220 $V_{rms}$ and the critical current($I_C$) of 320$\sim$340 A at 77K. Ten components in series, make the SFCL having the rated voltage of 2.2 $kV_{rms}$ for equal quench test. The fault test was conducted at an input voltage of 2.2 $kV_{rms}$ and fault current of 25 $kA_{rms}$. In addition, we examined the endurance characteristics for all bulk coils through repeat fault test. Test results shows that the SFCL successfully limited the fault current of 25$kA_{rms}$ to below $7{\sim}8kA_{p}$ within minimum 1.1msec after fault occurred. All bulk coils quenched together upon faults and shared the rated voltage evenly. The endurance test results show an equivalent among repeat fault test. During the quench process, average temperature of all bulk coils did not exceed 250 K, and the SFCL was totally safe during the whole operation.

  • Wide operating range and speed control is needed for wind power generating and a Doubly Fed Induction Generator(DFIG) has good adaptivity for that purpose. This paper deals with the speed, power, and power factor control using the Grid connected DFIG in the super-synchronous speed regions, by controlling frequency and voltage fed to the rotor. Power flow of the DFIG and steady-state algebraic equations of the equivalent circuit are analyzed. The wind turbine speed and constant stator power were controlled by the rotor exciting frequency. For a normal operating region, in which the generator ratings were not exceeded, rotor exciting frequency. For a normal operating region, in which the generator ratings were not exceeded, the rotor current was either less than or equal to the rated value. Accordingly, the optimal power factor can be selected relative to the permissible rated current at the rotor coil which controls the magnitude of the injected rotor voltage to the rotor according to a given rotor frequency. Consequently, it is possible to determine the optimal drive of a DFIG for wind power generation application.

  • The power transmission to the traction devices may be very important for the tractor performance and therefore this system has been studied very much in the past. On the other hand, the PTO(Power-take-off) has been considered as an accessary on the tractor with a few work for its power transmission. Because of increased use of PTO operation in various kind of farming operations in recent years, the function of PTO may become such important as the traction facilities. In this study, the power transmission characteristics of PTO drive was analyzed theoretically and some experimental work was done to study on it. The results of the study are as follows: 1) The most stable condition of PTO work was obtained when the intersection angle of the two curves for driving and driven torques was about ${\pi}/2$. 2) To obtain the most stable operation it is better to use both the speed control and the full control together. 3) Six steps differential gear may not be enough to use the PTO power smoothly. It is thought that the three steps differential gear on the shaft of PTO may be necessary additionally for a smooth operation. 4) When the traction facilities and the PTO are used at the same time, the torque of crank shaft becomes Tt + Tp, and the high efficiency and good stability of word will be obtained with the small variation of driving speed. 5) When the tractor was operated with 75% of the rated horse power and 70% of maximum speed, the best thermal efficiency could be obtained. 6) The most dangerous sound for human occured at the rated speed of PTO and tus it may be necessary to control the dangerous noise.

  • This paper proposes a field weakening control method for operating an induction motor with a variable DC input voltage condition. In the variable DC voltage condition such as a battery, the field weakening method are required for the maximum output power. The conventional field weakening control methods can be used for operating the induction motor over the rated speed in a constant DC-link voltage condition. However, the conventional methods for operating the motor with the variable DC voltage is not suitable for the maximum output power. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes the optimized field weakening control method to extend the operating range of the induction motor with a rated power in a limited thermal and a wide DC input voltage conditions. The optimized d-axis and q-axis current equations are derived according to the field weakening region I and II to extend the operating region. The experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • In this study, an organic Rankine cycle(ORC) for gas engine waste heat recovery for industry has been constructed and a performance analysis test has been carried out. Shell & tube style heat exchanger has been equipped on an engine exhaust manifold in order to absorb heat of engine exhaust gas into the working fluid(refrigerant R134a). Under 60 kW of engine power output, about 63 kW of engine exhaust gas heat was discharged and the proportion of heat recovered was 68~73% while 43~46 kW of heat was absorbed into working fluid. Consequently rated power output of ORC was 4.6 kW while the ratio of rated power output to engine exhaust gas heat was 7.3%.

  • Faced with unbalanced grid operation mode, the high voltage direct current (HVDC) based on voltage source converter (VSC) can be properly controlled by a dual current control scheme. For the modular multilevel converter (MMC) controlling the AC side current is able to limit the arm current which flows along the IGBT of submodule (SM) to rated current. However the limitation of the arm current results in leaving the control range of active power at MMC confined to below the rated capacity. As a result, limiting the arm current causes the problem that the DC side voltage of the HVDC can not be controlled to the reference value since MMC HVDC adjusts the DC side voltage through the active power. In this paper, we propose the algorithm adjusting the active powers of both MMCs to resolve the problem. The back-to-back MMC HVDC applying the algorithm is modeled by PSCAD/EMTDC to verify the algorithm.

  • Three-phase inductive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with DC reactor rated on 6.6 $KV_{rms}/200 A_{rms}$ has been developed in Korea. This system consists of one DC reactor, AC/DC power converter, and a three-phase transformer, which is called magnetic core reactor (MCR). This paper deals with the short-circuit analysis of the SFCL. The DC reactor was the HTS solenoid coil whose inductance was 84mH. The power converter was performed as the dual-mode operation for dividing voltage between the rectifying devices. The short-term normal operation (1 see) and short-circuit tests (2∼3 cycles) of this SFCL were performed successfully. In regular short-circuit test, the fault current was limited as 30% of rated short-circuit current at 2 cycles after the fault. The experimental results have a very similar tendency to the simulation results. Using the technique for the fault detection and SCR firing control, the fault current limiting rate of the SFCL was improved. From this research, the parameters for design and manufacture of large-scale SFCL were obtained.

  • Prior to destructive testing, diagnostic tests were performed in eight high voltage motors. Diagnostic tests included polarization index, ac current, dissipation factor($tan{\delta}$) and partial discharge magnitude. The rewind of motor stator insulation at rated voltage is assessed by the results of these tests. After completing the diagnostic tests, the stator windings of motors were subjected to gradually increasing ac voltage, until the insulation punctured. No. 1 motor failed near rated voltage of 12.96 kV. The breakdown voltage of No. 4 motor was 6.99 kV which is lower that expected for good quality coils in 6.6 kV class motors. The failure was located in a line-end coil at the exit from the core slot. These two motors began operation in 1994. While testing No. 7 motor, flashover occurred between the stator winding and the stator frame at 15 kV. The relationship between the diagnostic test and the drop in insulation breakdown voltage was analyzed.
