Ion exchange procedure was studied for the separation of thorium from the acidic solution obtained by means of decomposition of monazite with alkali solution. Present cation exchange method consists of adsorption of cations from the sample solution (ca. 0.6N HCl acidic) onto Amberlite IR-120 resin, elution of all of the rare earth cations with 700 ml. of 2N Hydrochloric acid, and recovery of the thorium by elution with 200ml. of 6N sulfaric acid. Thorium recovery by the ion-exchange method mentioned above, was quantitative, and it is concluded that this ion-exchange method may be used not only for industrial separation of thorium from rare earths but also for quantitative determination of thorium with relative error, ${\pm}1.0.$.
The elution characteristics of rare earth elements in $NH^{4+}$ form cation exchange resin had been investigated. Elution were performed varing the loading amount, column diameter, column length and eluent pH. Analysing the chemical species contained in each effluent, elution mechanisms of rare earth elements and the separation of rare earth elements in monazite could be understood. The resolution values of adjacent rare earth elements were improved increasing rare earths adsorption amount wfith the same column within it's exchange capacity. With $NH^{4+}$ resin form, column length does not affect on the resolution values and retention time of rare earth elements and the rare earth-EDTA complex were not adsorbed on $NH^{4+}$ resin form. pH of eluent affected on the reactivities between rare earth elements and EDTA. Decreasing eluent pH, resolution values of adjacent rare earth elements were increased while increasing elution time.
An aspect of organophilic modification for the delamination is described for the layered rare-earth hydroxides in this paper. The interlayer property of $RE_2(OH)_5NO_3{\cdot}nH_2O$, where RE=Eu (LEuH) and Tb (LTbH), was modified by the exchange reaction of nitrate ion with oleate anion that is one of the representative dispersion agents in nonpolar solvents. The bilayer arrangement of long oleate anions in the gallery of $RE_2(OH)_5NO_3{\cdot}nH_2O$ could effectively weaken the stacking of the hydroxide layers. Highly organophilic environment of the interlayer space promoted the introduction of toluene to delaminate the layered structure into their individual sheets. When irradiated with 365 nm UV, the resulting transparent colloidal solutions of toluene containing LEuH and LTbH nanosheets yielded typical red and green emissions, respectively, which are visible to the naked eye.
Although the rare earth elements (REEs) recycling industry is expected to increase worldwide in hightech industry, regulations for worker safety have yet to be established. This study was conducted to understand the potential hazard/risk of REE recycling and to support the establishment of regulations or standards. We review the extensive literature on the toxicology, occupational safety, and health issues, and epidemiological surveys related to the REEs, and propose suitable management measures. REE recycling has four key steps such as collection, dismantling, separation, and processing. In these processes, hazardous substances, such as REEs-containing dust, metals, and chemicals, were used or occurred, including the risk of ignition and explosion, and the workers can be easily exposed to them. In addition, skin irritation and toxicities for respiratory, nervous, and cardiovascular systems with the liver toxicity were reported; however, more supplementary data are needed, owing to incompleteness. Therefore, monitoring systems concerning health, environmental impacts, and safety need to be established, based on additional research studies. It is also necessary to develop innovative and environment-friendly recycling technologies, analytical methods, and biomarkers with government support. Through these efforts, the occupational safety and health status will be improved, along with the establishment of advanced REE recycling industry.

Oxyapatite[Ca2Nd8(SiO4)6O2] glass-ceramics have been suggested as wasteforms for the immobilisation of rare-earth radioactive nuclides because of their high waste-loading capability and good chemical durability. In particular, a partitioning effect is predicted to contribute to an enhancement of corrosion resistance in glass-ceramics compared with that of conjugate glasses of the same composition. Because rare-earths are inherently insoluble nuclides, detection of changes in corrosion behavior between glass-ceramics and conjugate glasses under normal conditions is not easy. In this study, therefore, we revealed the partitioning effect by exposing glass-ceramics and glasses to solution of pH 2, 7 and 10 at 90 ℃ for 20 d. In addition, we proposed the corrosion mechanism for oxyapatite glass-ceramics under various corrosion conditions. Especially, the glassy phase dissolved first, followed by the oxyapatite phase during pH 7 corrosion.
The separation of the rare earth elements with diethylene triamine N, N, N', N', N"-pentaacetic acid (DTPA) as eluent was carried out at different pH and concentrations by using anion exchange resin column. The rare earth elements were absorbed on the upper of the resin column and the best condition of the separation behavior was 0.025M of DTPA at pH 8.35. The elution order of the rare earths was in the order of the atomic number of the rare earth elements except samarium. The resolution of adjacent rare earth elements that have been separated with 0.025M-DTPA as eluent, was from 3.03 to 1.25 at pH 8.35. Resolution of Ce-Pr was maximum value in 3.03 and Eu-Gd was minimum in 1.25 at condition mentioned above, respectively. The resolution of rare earth elements separated with 0.025M DTPA eluent was very good at pH range of 8.0~8.6.

For the recovering rare earths in the spent nickel-metal hydride batteries, 10 M NaOH is added to the solution leached with sulfuric acid. The rare earth powders were precipitated at rate of 98 % at the condition of pH 2.0 or less. The recovered rare earth complex precipitate increased the leaching rate to nitric acid by heat treatment at $800^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. Subsequently secondary precipitation was performed by adding oxalic acid to the solution in which the rare earth complex precipitate was dissolved. The re-precipitated rare earth powders were converted into oxide form through heat treatment at $800^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours with purity of 99.5 %.

As industry and medicine developed, many people became interested in the quality of life. As the concern for health became higher, vegetarian or vegetable oils became more popular than meat. With the development of processes primarily using nickel catalysts today, the shelf life of vegetable oils has increased and mobility has become more convenient. Currently nickel catalysts for the curing of oil are dominated by foreign companies in the world market. On the other hand, the mass production technology of domestic nickel catalyst is backward, and the entire amount is imported from foreign countries. Therefore, there is a need for active research and development of a catalyst that can be commercialized in korea. In this study, nickel as a main active catalyst was used as a base for hydrogen curing reaction, and the effect of rare earth on catalytic activity was investigated. A certain amount of rare earths could induce the dispersion of nickel to increase efficiency and use as co-catalyst.
Ge-Ga-S glasses, contrary to other well-known chalcogenide glasses, show high rare-earth solubility. Raman spectra of GeS2-Ga2S3 glasses showed that two peaks at 260 cm-1 and 385 cm-1 increased in intensity with the addition of Ga2S3. These peaks are associated with the vibration of Ge-Ge bonds and edge-shared [GsS4] tetrahedra, respectively. In GeS2-Ga2S3-La2S3 glasses, the peak at 260 cm-1 decreased in intensity with addition of La2S3 and the one at 375 cm-1 due to the vibration of tetrahedra with non-bridging sulfurs increased. It indicated that La, or rare-earths in general, can easily be dissolved into the glass network as charge compensators for non-bridging sulfurs which were formed through the dissociation of Ge-Ge bonds and edge-shared [GaS4] tetrahedra. Since no such structural modification is expected in glasses as Ga-As-S, these peculiar transitions on the connection scheme in Ga-containing chalcogenide glasses seem to be playing the most important role on the enhanced rare-earth solubility.
