Mechanical Properties of Rapid-Setting Latex Modified Mortar for Antifoam Agent Type and Content (소포제 종류 및 혼입률에 따른 초속경 라텍스개질 모르타르의 역학적 특성)

  • The purpose of this study was to remove the excessive air foaming which was produced in mixing the RSLMC(latex-modified concrete with rapid-setting cement) by choosing the best antifoam agent type. A series of RSLMM(latex-modified mortar with rapid-setting cement) experiments were carried out as a basic experiments for RSLMC with the main experimental variables such as antifiamer types(A, B, C, D), antifoamer contents(0, 1, 2, 3%), and latex contents(10, 15%). Air content test and compressive strength tests were carried out to measure the improved properties of RSLMM. SEM analysis, also, was carried to observe the formation of latex film. The results of RSLMM showed that the decrease of 50% air content was obtained by admixturing an antifoam agent by 1%. This made the strength enhanced and the workability be within the purposed. The best properties of compressive strengths was obtained at latex content of 15% and D antifoam agent of 1%. compressive strength increased about 32.6%. The analysis of SEM results no difference in a formation of later film.

  • The purpose of this study was to remove the excessive air foaming which was produced in mixing the RSLMC(latex-modified concrete with rapid- setting cement) by choosing the best antifoam agent type and the optimized quantity for performance improved RSLMC. A series of RSLMM(latex-modified mortar with rapid-setting cement) experiments were carried out as the basic for RSLMC with the main experimental variables such as antifiamer types(A, B, C, D), antifoamer contents(0, 1, 2, 3%). Air content test and compressive, flexural tests were carried out to measure the improved properties of RSLMM and RSLMC. Chloride ion permeability test was carried out to estimate water permeability resistance. The results of RSLMM showed that the decrease of 50% air content was obtained by admixturing a antifoam agent by 1%. The compressive strength and flexural strength at 3 hours after RSLMC placement were 235kgf/cm$^2$ and 49kgf/cm$^2$, respectively, which exceeded the flexural strength criterion of 45kgf/cm$^2$ in order to open the RSLMC placed to traffic. The chloride permeability using A and C antifoamer at 28 days were below 100 coulombs, which was the permeability rating of negligible according to ASTM.

  • Controlled low-strength material(CLSM) which is easily excavated and also known as flowable material, is commonly used as a backfill in utility trenches and other applications. In this study, a rapid-setting flowable material a kind of CLSM made with a field soil were evaluated by an experimental study. The properties ordinarily desired from the mix are: (a) flow under gravity; (b) hardening for early workability(after 4 hours)and cover; and (c) ultimate strength low enough to allow ready excavation. Fluidity of fresh material is evaluated using a simple spread test. Hardening is measured by a mortar penetrometer, and these values are correlated with unconfined compressive strength. It is desirable to keep the ultimate strength to less than $5.6kg/cm^2$ somewhat less target strength is selected for the 28-day value.

  • The aim of the research is evaluating a fundamental properties of mortar with atomized molten slag to develop a hardener for dry soil paving concrete. According to the analyzing results, comparing OPC, more favorable strength characteristics were obtained, while it showed rapid setting when the mixture contained more than 10 %. Therefore, when the atomized molten slag is used as a hardener, appropriate retarding process is needed.

  • Blossom-end rot is probably the most recognizable Ca deficiency that affects fruit production including pepper. We investigated the induction of blossom-end rot during the period of rapid vegetative growth and fruit setting, and the effect of Ca fertilization on the suppression of blossom-end rot in pepper plants grown in a plastic-film house. During the first fruit setting period, more than 60% of pepper fruits larger than 8 cm showed the symptoms of blossom-end rot. Under the condition of transpiration occurring at a much faster rate, growing leaves of pepper plants could be the greater sinks for Ca than developing fruits. The incidence of blossom-end rot was significantly decreased after two weeks of Ca fertigation. Calcium application during the rapid vegetative growth and fruit setting period could be suggested as a preventive step to overcome the local Ca deficiency inducing blossom-end rot of pepper fruits.

Cost-Effectiveness of Voluntary HIV Testing Strategies in a Very Low-Prevalence Country, the Republic of Korea

  • Background: The Republic of Korea has a very low prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, but the number of new HIV diagnoses has steadily risen, strongly indicating a large number of undetected HIV infections. Thus, it is important for Korean public health authorities to adopt and encourage cost-effective HIV detection tools, such as rapid HIV screening tests. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and rapid tests in a public health center (PHC) setting. Methods: We developed a decision analytic model to assess the per-examinee cost and the cost-effectiveness of identifying HIV patients in a PHC setting using two HIV testing strategies: conventional HIV screening by ELISA versus rapid HIV testing. Analysis was performed in two scenarios: HIV testing in an average-risk population and in a high-risk population. Results: Compared to the ELISA, the rapid test was cost-saving and cost-effective. The per-examinee cost was USD 1.61 with rapid testing versus USD 3.38 with ELISA in an average-risk population, and USD 4.77 with rapid testing versus USD 7.62 with ELISA in a high-risk population. The cost of identifying a previously undiagnosed HIV case was USD 26,974 with rapid testing versus USD 42,237 with ELISA in an average-risk population, and USD 153 with rapid testing versus USD 183 with ELISA in a high-risk population. Conclusion: Rapid testing would be more cost-effective than using conventional ELISA testing for identifying previously undiagnosed HIV-infected cases in Korea, a country with extremely low HIV prevalence.

Performance Evaluation of 100 % RAP Asphalt Mixtures using different types of Rapid-Setting Polymer-Modified Asphalt Emulsion for Spray Injection Application (속경성 바인더 유형에 따른 긴급보수용 스프레이 패칭 상온 재활용 아스팔트 혼합물(RAP)의 성능 평가)

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum mix design of the content of 100 % reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) for spray injection application with different binder types. METHODS : Literature review revealed that spray injection method is the one of the efficient and economical methods for repairing a small defective area on an asphalt pavement. The Rapid-Setting Polymer modified asphalt mixtures using two types of rapid setting polymers-asphalt emulsion and a quick setting polymer asphalt emulsion-were subjected to the following tests to determine optimum mix designs and for performance comparison: 1) Marshall stability test, 2) Retained stability test, 3) Wet track abrasion test, and 4) Dynamic stability test. RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS : Type A, B, and C emulsions were tested with different mix designs using RAP aggregates, to compare the performances and determine the optimum mix design. Performance of mixtures with Type A emulsion exceeded that of mixtures with Type B and C emulsion in all aspects. In particular, Type A binder demonstrated the highest performance for WTAT at low temperature. It demonstrated the practicality of using Type A mixture during the cold season. Furthers studies are to be performed to verify the optimum mix design for machine application. Differences in optimum mix designs for machine application and lab application will be corrected through field tests.

  • The basic properties and volume stability of the ultra-rapid setting cement mortar containing low-quality recycled aggregate with a higher water absorption and lower specific gravity than relavent Korea Standard were experimentally confirmed. The mix proportion without recycled aggregate followed that of the general repair mortar used in the fields. 15% and 30% of the fine aggregate was substituted by the recycled aggregate in the mixtures with and without latex emulsion, and properties and characteristics of the mortar including mortar flow, setting time, compressive and flexural strength, and linear deformation under sealed and unsealed conditions were evaluated. It was confirmed that when low-quality recycled aggregate was used by 30%, there were risks of decrease in the early-age strength by up to 50% within 24h and increases in drying shrinkage by up to 2 times for 2 weeks compared to the the mixtures without the recycled aggregate.

  • As the major alumina source, domestic alunite was applied to synthesize the clinker for rapid hardening cement. The main minerals of the clinker were found to be C3S, C11A7-CaF2 and some C4AF by means of chemical treatment, x-ray diffraction analysis and microscopic observation. Rapid hardening cement was made of the clinker by adding suitable amount of hemi-hydrite and anhydrite. The setting time of the cement was regulated with citric acid as setter.

  • Purpose : The aim of this studγ was to evaluate the patient's and dentist's perspective and knowledge on rapid human immunodeficiency virus screening test in dental setting. Material and Methods: In March 2009, 100 patients and 100 dentists at College of Dentistry, Yonsei University were provided an attitude assessment survey. Results : Results were analyzed for acceptance of testing and potential barriers. 94% of patients agreed to take a rapid HIV screening test and 77% of dentists were willing to provide the test to their patients. Also the current knowledge state of patients and dentists on HIV infection was not accurate as expected. Conclusion : Overall, dental clinic patients widely accepted the offer of rapid oral HIV screening. Rapid HIV screening test in the dental setting ran be an important option to increase the number of individuals who know their HIV status.
