  • This paper summarizes full-scale test results on CFT column to flat plate connections subjected to gravity loading. CFT construction has gained wide acceptance in a relatively short time in domestic building practice due to its various structural and construction advantages. Constructing the floor as flat plate is often regarded as being essential for both cost savings and rapid construction. However, efficient details for CFT column to flat plate connections have not been proposed yet, and their development is urgently needed. Based on some strategies that include maximizing economical field construction, several connecting schemes were proposed and tested in this study. Test results showed the proposed connection details can exhibit strength and stiffness comparable to or greater than those of R/C flat plate counterpart.

  • It is possible to suppress voltage drops, power loading fluctuations and regeneration power lapses for DC railway systems by applying an energy storage system. A electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) of the rapid charge/discharge type has been developed and used in wide ranges. It has a long life, high efficiency and maintenance free/low pollution features as a new energy storage element. In this paper, an efficient charge and discharge control method of a bidirectional DC-DC converter using the supercapacitor is proposed.

  • It is possible to suppress voltage drops, power loading fluctuations and regeneration power lapses for DC railway systems by applying an energy storage system. Recently the electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) of the rapid charge/discharge type has been developed and used in wide ranges. The on board energy storage system with supercapacitor for railway vehicles presented in this paper seems to be a reliable technical solution with an enormous energy saving potential. In this paper, an efficient charge and discharge control method of a bidirectional DC-DC converter using the supercapacitor is proposed.

  • The response of concrete structures subjected to shock and blast load involves a rapid transient phase, during which material breach may take place. Such an effect could play a crucial role in determining the residual state of the structure and the possible dispersion of the fragments. Modelling of the transient phase response poses various challenges due to the complexities arising from the dynamic behaviour of the materials and the numerical difficulties associated with the evolving material discontinuity and large deformations. Typical modelling approaches include the traditional finite element method in conjunction with an element removal scheme, various meshfree methods such as the SPH, and the mesoscale model. This paper is intended to provide an overview of several alternative approaches and discuss their respective applicability. Representative concrete material models for high pressure and high rate applications are also commented. Several recent application studies are introduced to illustrate the pros and cons of different modelling options.

  • This paper extends a single equation, semi-analytical approach for three-span bridges to multi-span ones for the rapid and precise determination of natural frequencies and natural mode shapes of an orthotropic, multi-span plate. This method can be used to study the dynamic interaction between bridges and vehicles. It is based on the modal superposition method taking into account intermodal coupling to determine natural frequencies and mode shapes of a bridge deck. In this paper, a four- and a five-span orthotropic roadway bridge deck are compared in the first 10 modes with a finite element method analysis using ANSYS software. This simplified implementation matches numerical modeling within 2% in all cases. This paper verifies that applicability of a single formula approach as a simpler alternative to finite element modeling.

  • Small-sized gas turbine engine could be applied to various fields such as propulsion, power generation, machine driving, etc., and Doosan has been developing 5MW class gas turbine engine for power generation since 2005. To verify its design performance and operating characteristics, a gas turbine engine test facility was constructed, and control system was also established to satisfy rapid and reliable control performance. In this paper, the hardware specification and structure of control system for gas turbine engine are introduced, and test result for starting characteristics analysis and loading is also presented.

  • A novel and simple method of designing the current feedback loop for the velocity controller of an armature controlled dc servo motor is presented. Instead of constructing the usual tight current feedback loop, a loose current feedback loop is suggested in this paper. More specifically, the armature current is not limited to a fixed constant value, but instead the upper bound value is allowed to be variable along with the present motor speed. The control system designed in this manner shows that the motor under control is robust to a wide range of loading conditions and yields a more rapid transient characteristics which is verified experimentally by applying the method in the design of the controller for an Industrial robot.

  • Fe-4Ni-0.5Mo-1Cu powder was selected as raw material, pressed and sinter-hardened at $1135\;^{\circ}C$ for 30 min with rapid cooling. The density varies in the range of $7.24-7.29\;g/cm^3$. Its fatigue properties have been tested in axial loading of alternating tensile/compressive stress at R=-1 with a servo-pulse pump. The fatigue endurance limit was measured to be 260 MPa. The microstructure showed more homogeneous bainite and martensite. Fractography displayed the fatigue cracks initiated from the pore areas near the surface. A non-typical ductile fatigue striation was found. More dimples occurred on fracture surface due to the plastic deformation, which can prohibit cracking propagation and improve its fatigue properties.

  • In this paper three damaged exterior RC beam-column joints made of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) were repaired. The aim of the study was to restore back the lost capacity of the beam-column joint to the original state or more. A relatively cheap material locally available galvanized steel welded wire mesh (GSWWM) of grid size 25 mm was used to confine the damaged region and then jacketed with cement mortar. Repaired specimens were also subjected to similar cyclic displacement as those of unrepaired specimens. Seismic parameters such as load carrying capacity, ductility, energy dissipation, stiffness degradation etc. were analyzed. Results show that repaired specimens exhibited better seismic performance and hence the adopted repairing strategies could be considered as satisfactory. These findings would be helpful to the field engineers to adopt a suitable rapid and cost efficient repairing technique for restoring the damaged frame structural joints for post earthquake usage.
