  • The Raman shift of water vapor is 3657 $cm^{-1}$, and this Raman signal can be easily separated from other Raman signals or elastic signals. However, it is difficult to make simultaneous Raman measurements on the three phases of water, namely, ice water, liquid water, and water vapor. This is because we must consider the overlap between their Raman spectra. Therefore, very few groups have attempted to make Raman simultaneous measurements even on two elements (water vapor and liquid water, or water vapor and ice water). We have made an effort to find three characteristic Raman wavelengths that correspond to the three phases of water after measuring full Raman spectra of water on particular days that are rainy, snowy or clear. Finally, we have found that the 401-nm, 404-nm, and 408-nm wavelengths are the most characteristic Raman wavelengths that are representative of the water phases when we are using the 355-nm laser wavelength for making measurements.

  • Synthesis of gold nanoparticles (NPs) made an aqueous environment via the reduction of HAuCl4 by ascorbic acid (AC) with the surfactant of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Highly monodisperse gold particles with size ranges from 4 to 20 nm were prepared in high-yield by pH control. The synthesized gold nanoparticles were analyzed for structural and optical properties using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-vis spectroscopy. In this study, we could reveal that the prepared nanoparticles exhibited efficient surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) properties, and their SERS activities depends on size.

  • In 1987, M. K. Wu and Paul Chu discovered $Y_{1.2}Ba_{0.8}CuO_4$ (YBCO) with critical temperature ($T_c$) of 93 K. It has significantly lowered the cost of cooling of a material up to the point where superconductivity set in. Utilizing the cost reduction of attaining superconductivity and the vast amount of research to understand characteristics of high temperature oxide superconducting materials, there has been effort to use a high temperature superconductor as a coated conductor. It is important to characterize the materials precisely for stable performance before commercializing. We used polarized Raman scattering spectroscopy to study structural and stoichiometric information regarding $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$, $GdYBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$, and $GdBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ produced by three leading groups of producing commercial grade high temperature superconductor coated conductors American Superconductor Corporation, Superpower, and SuNAM.

  • Due to the electrical properties such as narrow bandgap and high carrier mobility, indium antimonide (InSb) has attracted a lot of attention recently. For the fabrication of electronic or photonic devices, an etching process is required. However, during etching process, enegetic ions can induce structural damages on the bombarded surface. Especially, InSb has a very weak binding energy between In atom and Sb stom, it can be easily damaged by impingement of ions. In the previous work, to evaluate the surface properties after Ar ion beam etching, the plasma-induced structural damage on the etched InSb(100) surface had been examined by resonant Raman spectroscopy. As a result, we demonstrated the relation between the enhanced transverse optical(TO) peak in the Raman spectrum and the ion-induced structral damage near the InSb surface. In this work, the annealing effect on the etched InSb(100) surface has investigated. Annealing process was performed at $450^{\circ}C$ for 10 minute under antimony ambient. As-etched InSb(100) surface had shown a strongly enhanced TO scattering intensity in the Raman spectrum. However, the annealing process with antimony flowing caused the intensity to recover due to the structural reordering and the reduction of antimony vacancies. It proves that the origin of enhanced TO scattering is Sb vacancies. Furthermore, it shows that etching-induced damage can be cured effectively by the following annealing process under Sb ambient.

• [ $Gd_{1+x}Ba_{2-x}Cu_3O_7$ ] (GdBCO) coated conductors on IBAD-MgO templates have grown by pulsed laser deposition. Critical current of the films were measured as about 90 A/cm by a four-probe method. The optical response of the films was investigated by Raman scattering spectroscopy. According to the Raman scattering spectra, the peaks at $328\;cm^{-1}$, $451\;cm^{-1}$, $504\;cm^{-1}$ were found and assigned to one $B_{1g}$ mode and two $A_{1g}$ modes, respectively. The high critical-current carrying behaviors of the GdBCO coated conductors are ascribed to their 123-structure without exchange of cation and incorporation of oxygen into the cuprates.

  • We present the high-resolution spectrum of the S-type symbiotic star V455 Sco obtained with the Dupont telescope in 2014 June. We note that the Raman-scattered O VI ${\lambda}1032$ at $6825{\AA}$ exhibits a triple-peak profile. Adopting an accretion disk model with an additional contribution from a collimated bipolar outflow, we attempt to fit the profile. We propose that the blue and central peaks are formed via Raman-scattering of O VI line photons from the accretion flow and that the bipolar flow is responsible for the remaining red peak. It is also noted that V455 Sco exhibits the Raman-scattered He II features blueward of $H{\alpha}$ and $H{\beta}$.

  • Nd-doped $BiFeO_3$ materials were synthesized via a sol-gel method. The crystal structure, magnetic properties, and complex impedance spectroscopy of multiferroic $Bi_{1-x}Nd_xFeO_3$ (BNFO) materials were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman scattering, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and complex impedance spectroscopy. Our results show that the lattice crystal constants (a, c) and the ratio c/a of BNFO materials decreased with increasing Nd concentration. All samples exhibited weak ferromagnetism at room temperature, and the magnetization of samples was enhanced by the presence of $Nd^{3+}$ ions. There was an enhancement in the spontaneous magnetization of BFO with increasing Nd concentration, which is attributable to the collapse of the spin cycloid structure.

  • Nanoscale gold particles have been intensively researched due to their potential applications in catalysis, electronics, plasmonics, and biological assays. In our study, we fabricated gold nanoparticles (NPs) that were synthesized in an aqueous environment via the reduction of $HAuCl_4$ by ascorbic acid (AC) with a sodium citrate (SC) surfactant. Highly monodispersed gold particles with sizes ranging from 123 to 184 nm were prepared in high-yield by a surfactant concentration. The structural and optical properties of the synthesized gold nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-vis spectroscopy. The prepared nanoparticles exhibited efficient surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) properties that were dependent on their on size.
