  • In our nature, the utilization of rainwater is essential for healthy water recirculation. This is one of the solutions of the increment of impermeability surface according to the development of new cities; this study of the improvement of rainwater quality has been carried on through the improvement of collecting and restoring system of rainwater. The southwestern region of Daejeon City, the rainwater coefficient of run off was 0.40 and this number had computed to 0.59 after the development. After filtration of rainwater, the heavy metal (Cu, As, Cr, Fe, Mn) contents level were lower than underground water. Moreover, collected rainwater showed better quality than underground water in following criteria; hardness, permanganate consumption quality, chloride, evaporation residue, sulfates and nitrate nitrogen. This water quality met the gray water quality standards. The rainwater quality was still suitable to use as bathroom flushing and gardening after 100 days of storage. This study proved that modification (installation of cover with gutter to existing rainwater collection system, proper filtering, and installation of underground storage tank) of collection system could improve quality of water and maintain this approximately 100 days.

  • The worldwide shortage of water resources is a major environmental issue. Using pure water for drinking and domestic purposes is a bigger issue than other environmental issues. Industrialization and Urbanization have even polluted rainwater. In China, when it rains, rainwater is stored on the roof or other sources of storage for daily use resulting in pollution. Several studies have been conducted to treat rainwater. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficiency of constructed wetlands by using ACF as a medium. So, this study aims to treat rainwater in Wuhan city through a Composite Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands. First, rainwater was stored in the tank while it flows out of the roof, further it is processed in constructed wetlands. The constructed wetlands is consisted with plants Calamus and Chives, adding ACF (prepared from luffa) has achieved great results in this study. Results show that the pollutants have been removed to a considerable level, there were significant differences in removal rates under different HRT at 6h, 9h and 12h respectively. Therefore, Composite Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands is recommended for total nitrogen and Ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus.

  • In this study to estimate suitable size of rain tank in Suwon district, monthly rainfall, daily rainfall duration curve and daily rainy days have been analyzed. Annual rainwater consumption and daily average amount of storage with respect to size of rain tank have been calculated by applying continuity equations that take account of daily rainfall, daily consumptive use, storage of rain tank, It has been shown that above 50 mm of rainfall in the ordinance related to reclamation water may be inappropriate regulation if annual amount of rainfall captured, efficiency of utilized rainwater, number of days for utilized rain tank, daily average amount of storage and daily consumptive use have been considered. Thus, it has been shown that suitable size of rain tank should be determined considering reasonable daily consumptive use with respect to district, constructed cost of rain tank and benefit of rain tank constructed.

  • The purpose of this study is to draw out objective bases for selecting various applicable facilities in case of the establishment of rainwater management strategies. To do so, sixteen facilities were selected from decentralized rainwater management systems that induce rainwater infiltration and detention as well as centralized end-of-pipe type infiltration and detention facilities in local areas. With these facilities, it attempted to evaluate them in terms of sustainability, pollutant elimination, flood control capacity and costs and subsequently analyzed correlations between each characteristic. The outcomes of the analysis were as follows: First was the analysis of characteristics between decentralized rainwater management systems and end-of-pipe rainwater management systems. From the decentralized rainwater management systems, the mulden-rigolen system and grass swale at street level had the highest in the total of the four items while the totals of the underground detention tank and temporary detention site were highest in end-of-pipe rainwater management systems. After analyzing the correlation between different types of facilities and each variable, it can be said that decentralized rainwater management systems have a higher correlation than end-of-pipe rainwater management systems in terms of sustainability whereas the latter are better in flood control capacity than the former. Second, the analysis of correlation in variables of each facility is as follows: first, there is a negative correlation between sustainability value and flood control capacity value; and there is a positive correlation between flood control capability and pollutants elimination. In addition, it revealed that the higher the flood control and pollutant elimination capability the higher the facility costs. Based on these assessments, it is possible to use them as objective selection criteria for facility application in case of site development project or complex plan.

  • The Philippines is known for its abundant water resources such as the rainfall, where it has a mean annual rainfall range from 965 to 4,100mm. Due to the rapid urbanization of the country, the population in Metro Manila has been continuously increasing hence, the demand for a potable water supply also increases. To mitigate the scarcity of potable water supply, utilization of the water resources should be practiced. Rainwater harvesting is one way to utilize the rainfall runoff. This study analyzedthe potentiality of the rainwater harvesting on residential areas in Metro Manila. A water balance method based spreadsheet was used with input parameters including daily rainfall, catchment area, runoff coefficient, population and the water demand. The efficiency of the domestic water tank was analyzedusing the three different climatic conditions (i.e., minimum, median andmaximum annual rainfalls) and three different types of toilets (i.e., inefficient, conventional and dual-flush toilets). Furthermore, the overflow volume was used to determine which size of rainwater storage was more appropriate for the study area. The results of the study showed that for the three types of rainfall years, only the conventional and dual-flush toilets were suitable for the utilization of rainwater harvesting. The utilization of the $60m^3$ storage tank was sufficient for supplying the demandsof the 90 houses only for a small period of time, 3 months. Based from this study, to fully sustain the long-term water demand of the houses, the enlargement of the tank size having a capacity of 1,100 to $2,500m^3$ is ideal.

  • This study developed a determination method for a rainwater retention-pumping combination system for roof runoff control. The outflow and stored water volume in the rainwater system was simulated using a water balance equation. Its result is presented in the TPP (Tank capcity-Peak outflow-Pumping rate) curves for rainfall return periods. In a case study on reduction of the peak flow rate of 100-year return period to 5-year in Seoul, The range of pumping rate for $100m^2$ roof area is determined as $0{\sim}25{\ell}$/min. Additionally, retention volume of $8.5{\sim}10m^3$ can be combined with the pumping rate range. That is to say an effective combination of a retention-pumping system capacity can be determined from a system of $8.5m^3$ tank with $25{\ell}$/min to $10m^3$ tank without pump. Using the TPP curves, engineers can determine the effective combination range of retention & pumping system capacity. Furthermore, that can be helpful to decide a detail system capacity for field condition.

  • Urban floods are usually caused by the lack of drainage capacity. Hence, sewer capacity expansion methodology by replacing small pipes with bigger ones is primarily applied as a flood control measure. However, this approach is often unreasonable because of the costs and time involved. Thus, the installation of underground rainwater storage tanks with the two advantages of flood control and water conservation is proposed. This study compared the effectiveness of flood control by both the sewer expansion methodology and rainwater storage tanks using the Storm Water Management Model. Three cases were simulated in this study. The first case analyzed flood reduction by the storm sewer expansion methodology. The simulation results indicate that the overflow volume from manholes was reduced by 49% with this methodology. The second case analyzed flood reduction by installation of rainwater storage tanks. The simulation results indicate that the overflow volume was reduced by 62%. However, these two cases could not prevent urban floods completely. Hence, the third case analyzed the joint application of the storm sewer expansion methodology and rainwater storage tanks. In this simulation, flooding did not occur. Consequently, the results of this study clearly show that underground rainwater storage tanks are more effective for flood control than capacity expansion of storm sewer. Furthermore, the joint application of these two flood control measures is more effective than their separate application.
