  • Purpose : As the number of the transportation poor has increased, the application of Universal Design on urban railway station has recently been focused. However, the current criteria used in domestic areas did not show the characteristic of facilities within urban railway station. Therefore, this study aims to explore the detailed criteria in applying ideas from Universal Design to sanitary facilities, especially toilets within railway station. Method : This study explores the criteria by evaluating findings from previous studies. First, the current situation of sanitary facilities in railway station is assessed. Then, the detailed criteria applicable to railway station toilets are concluded, by reviewing types of transportation poor and principles of Universal Design. Result : Findings from this study are as follows. First, the current criteria applied to railway station toilets lack ideas of Universal Design, so the better criteria applicable to sanitary facilities in railway station are necessary. Second, standard criteria used in domestic areas with newly additional criteria suggest that sanitary facilities should be established according to those criteria. Taken together, the better sanitary facilities should be provided to railway users through the application of Universal Design to railway station toilets. • A railway station appears in the form of multi-use station building where cultural and commercial elements such as shopping and leisure are mixed, getting out of simple space configuration oriented to the space for station work, where a passenger stays for a little while. Now, a railway station is a place expanded to the inside of city, and builds a relationship with urban fabric, and therefore it should receive the social change in the time together with the surrounding infrastructure, and should inevitably form the urban environment. And it should become the 'Place' so as to be capable of playing a role of buffer and a role of regional gateway landmark by making users included in the inside through various uses with regard to the dispersed urban connection. Hence, this study is intended to examine the planning through the place branding of railway station. In the method of research, the characteristics that place branding had was investigated, and an analysis was made on the basis of 10 place branding strategic elements and 6 railway design guidelines. And it was intended to set a direction in which the existing place branding strategy could be applied to the railway station, and was intended to derive the place branding planning strategic elements of railway station. Hence, the planning can be classified into the following 5 kinds in connection with railway station. First, identity should be embodied through the strategy of constructing the symbolic image of railway station. Second, a role of mediating variously approaching flows in the city should be played. Third, the spatial layout of railway station, which can increase the efficiency of use, should be arranged. Fourth, special characteristics should be intensified through creative storytelling that stimulates emotion. Fifth, an organic change is gradually necessary for sustainability. These planning elements should be applied in harmonious combination. Therefore, a new railway station can be maded by building identity and placeness and by giving the value through these planning directions in the future.

  • This study examines the change of Shinchon railway station in Kyungui Railway from 1920 up to now. Kyungui Railway was constructed in order to prepare the war against Russia by Japan in 1905. Shinchon station was constructed in 1920 for the sake of convenience of people who lived near Seoul. Recently the development of Shinchon staton was demended because of the possibilities of economic development and the location of Shinchon station. But at the same time there are many opinions against the development of Shinchon station because it has many great memories and it is a kind of symbol of modem life in Shinchon. Even though Shinchon station has developed for a shopping center, the location of the old station has been kept. But the shape had changed because of the new railway station. So the purpose of this paper is considering how to solve the conflicts between the development and the preservation of historic places in the cities which is one of the most serious pending issues.

  • This study aims to analyze architectural characteristics of railway station facilities which were built with development of railroads from Japanese Colonial Period to 1950's. To achieve this goals, 7 railway stations in Gyeongju area that are worth preserving were set up as research targets. For this study, I analyzed literature of the railway station and drawings which the KORAL Daegu Branch is keeping. Railway stations without a construction drawing investigated a direct visit. After analyzing the railway station facilities, the architectural properties such as plan, elevation and section have been identified. The results are as follows. First, Each modern railway station is usually consisted of waiting room and office, and ancillary spaces have been added. Over the years, however, the space was expanded horizontally. In that case, the structure and finish materials have been changed, like now. Second, Most of the roof shape is 'Matbae'(gable roof), especially Gyeongju station and Bulguksa Station are 'Woojingak roof. The roof structure is truss structure, especially as Pratt and Scissors type, but Gyeongju Station's structure is a reinforced concrete. Third, main doorway of waiting room is located in the center of the front gable. However, small stations like 'Ahwa' and 'Ipsil' station to ensure the passengers' waiting area are placed next to the office area.

  • Purpose: A large number of the mobility impaired have increasingly used the railway station, so the application of UD(Universal Design) on urban railway station has been interested. However, the current criteria used in domestic areas have concerned about the effective administration of railway station facilities rather than the needs of he mobility impaired. Of diverse facilities in railway station, the platform is considered as an important space due to many transportation users' riding or transfer in railway stations. Therefore, this study aims to explore the detailed criteria in adapting ideas from UD to platform within railway station. Methods: This study explores the criteria by evaluating findings from previous studies. First, all criteria related to platform in domestic and foreign areas are taken together and analyzed, and appropriate criteria first are established. Based on these, the current situation of platform facilities in railway station is evaluated. Then, the detailed criteria applicable to railway station platform are concluded, by reviewing types of the mobility impaired and principles of UD. Result: Findings from this study are as follows. First, the current criteria applied to railway station platforms lack ideas of UD, while the criteria used in foreign countries adequately reflect the ideas of UD on railway station platforms; therefore, the better criteria applicable to platform facilities in domestic railway station are necessary. Second, standard criteria used in domestic areas with newly additional criteria suggest that platform facilities should be established according to those criteria. Taken together, the better platform facilities should be provided to railway users through the application of UD to railway station platforms. Implications: For the future users in railway station platforms, the additional research on criteria of UD as well as diverse types of spaces within railway stations should have been continued.

  • This paper was to find out the design methodology for korean railway station of steel structure using by wooden structure system. Traditionally Korean architecture was made by wooden structure system what is called Gong-Po (wooden bracket structure system). The abundant ornament of Korean architecture is resulted from the composition rule of Gong-Po(wooden bracket structure system). But Korean wooden structural system have a limit in constructing large building, for example railway station, airport terminal, convention center etc. It is needed to convert wooden structure system into steel structure system. But there are many differences between wooden structure and steel structure in texture, material strength, joint system of elements etc. In this paper, we will show you how to make a joint system for steel structure of railway station and how to present the traditionality of Korean architecture in railway station.
