  • The Electronic Interlocking unit in railway signalling system is safety-related facilities to determine route and speed for train running. In particular, the SSI(Solid State Interlocking) is Electronic Interlocking unit for high-speed railway, and it performs safety-critical function by MPM(Micro-Processor Module). Meanwhile, MPM is composed of the PES(Programmable Electronic System)-based system, and the PES-based system in railway safety-related facilities should be implemented by complying with the safety requirements defined in IEC 62425 and IEC 61508. In this paper, we performed modeling of failure rate and reliability for MPM implemented by fault tolerance methods and analyzed functional safety for MPM. Moreover, we determined SIL(Safety Integrity Level) for MPM according to the safety requirements defined in IEC 61508 based on an analyzed functional safety.

  • Interlocking signalling system plays key role as core system to manage railway operation. The core role of railway operation is to control routing, displaying signal and regulation for train. Interlocking system relate tightly to railway accident because collision and derailment is sometime taken place wrong route setting and signal displaying. Safety activity for interlocking system is inevitable to avoid the accident over its life cycle. The safety activity includes hazard identification and analysis, safety requirement allocation, safety plan, safety activity and ao on. The safety activity need a broad wide range work. In this paper, we concentrate on hazard identification for generic interlocking system and programmable electronic interlocking system and compare between two results. The hazards will be used for safety activity.

  • Recently, a large amount of budget was invested in improving the railway tracks(double tracking, route improvement) of Janghang and Jungang line. However, further action to enhance the investment effect has been needed because the desired effect have not been obtained. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of track improvement briefly by examining the project summary of Janghang and Jungang line railway line improvement and analysing the change of the transport performance and revenue. The results of this study can be applied not only to establish an operation plan for maximizing the revenue of rail operation also to enhance an effect of track improvement.

  • In this paper will be presented an algorithm for designing of a railway interlocking table which is a document describing the functional specification of the interlocking device. The ability to produce an interlocking table has been handed down in the signalling engineers society. And the signalling engineer makes the most of his expertise to produce an interlocking table. But, the expertise has not yet been organized into technical system, the core of the expertise is a hard nut to crack. Therefore, we analyze into signal engineering expertise, and propose a generalization of interlocking notion. Also, an algorithm is drawn up based on a train route setting principle to solve practical and general problems by computer And the performance of the algorithm is evaluated for test program based on AutoCAD technology. The evaluation result shows that it can be utilized as the effective algorithm for computer control of the signalling system as interlocking device, that it improved in safety

However, in construction engineering practice and feasibility study the construction of difficult and strategically important bridges is generally joins in wider concept of bridge crossing. The last includes not only actually the bridge(through the river, gulf, etc.), but also approaches to it, which construction in view of features of a relief and a configuration of new transport communications which have already developed and subject to construction not less difficult technically and not only economically expended, than building of the basic artificial construction.

  • Recently, as South Korea has joined the OSJD, the rules of the OSJD need to be applied to South Korea. Therefore, the railways are connected to the continent railway in terms of software, but the railway systems in neighboring countries have been developed and operated for a long time, and are quite different with some restrictions in terms of hardware. Therefore, this study analyzed the current railway systems of neighboring countries' based on the TSI used in Europe for technical interoperability. A real operation with the operation models within the specific route was assumed and vector functions for the Infrastructure vector & Rolling stock vector were produced. The IOP value was calculated by working out the interfacing matrix value between the infrastructure vector and rolling stock vector. As a result of calculating the IOP in a specific route, which is from Busan South Korea to Vladivostok with the diesel locomotive hauling freight cars, the value was only 22%, which is fairly low in terms of the interoperability. In other words, there are 77.8% restricting items preventing their interoperability. Such restricted causes should be improved to increase the technical interoperability in the long term. Moreover, and when railway systems are constructed and manufactured, it is important to keep IOP 100% to increase the operating efficiency in continental railways.

  • One of the methods which can enhance the efficiency of railroad network is construction of interconnection branch line for several route to share one railway. In Korea, this method already has been implemented or excuted as project level. This study suggests a network design model and a solution algorithm to choice most proper site to construction it and determine the priority of branch lines which can be considered in planning level, not project level. The model is a non-linear optimization program which minimize total cost-construction cost, operating cost and passengers' travel cost. The decision variables are a binary variable to explain whether construction or not and its direction and a integer variable of the frequencies of travel routes. The solution algorithm-problem solution and route choice and also the result of implementation for example network are suggested. This result can be more advanced after application in real network and calibration of parameters.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a new transit assignment model for intercity rail networks. The characteristics of intercity rail are different from that of public transit in urban area. Line selection probability on route section is introduced to include the characteristics of intercity rail into transit assignment model. Network expansion is more simplified by a assumption line selection probability is externally given. The generalized cost is used to decide the volume of each transit line in most of existing transit assignment models. But, many variables have influence on the volume of each line such as time schedule of transit lines, inter-station distance, passengers' income, seasonal variation of demand and regional characteristics. The influence of these variables can be considered to decide the volume of each line by introducing line selection probability on route section. The tests on a small scale network show that the model proposed in this paper is superior to existing models for predicting intercity rail demand. Proposed model is suitable to consider the complicated fare structure of intercity rail and to draw inter-station demand directly as a result of assignment procedure.

  • A new railway line of about 17km length was planned between Dongbaeksan and the neighboring town Dokye to improve the existing decrepit railway system. New line about 17km of the distance will almost be in circular alignment tunnels owing to the difference of elevation about 380m. Since the geology of the area is rather unusual compared to the normal in South Korea, extensive geological investigations have been carried out to prepare geological maps and profiles along the planned tunnel routes. The tunnel will almost be in sedimentary rock formations, such as limestone, sandstone, shale, coal etc and be near abandoned mines Various rock formations have the complicated, alter ed those rocks, but are well developed with laminated formations. Each rock formations have been classified using the Q-system and the cost of tunnel excavation, support has been estimated and compared for three alternative routes in the design stage. Based on these estimates, the final route of t he railway line was chosen.
