  • Polymeric composite structures used in ground transportation applications such as the carbody of tilting train may be exposed to a ground environmental conditions during long-term missions. In this study, the degradation of mechanical and physical properties of graphite/epoxy composite and glass fabric/phenol composite under ground environmental conditions was investigated. Accelerated environmental conditions of ultraviolet radiation, temperature, and moisture were considered. Several types of specimens were used to investigate the effects of environmental conditions on mechanical properties of the composites. Also, storage shear modulus, loss shear modulus, and tan 8 were measured as a function of exposure times through a dynamic mechanical analyzer. Finally, composite surfaces exposed to environmental conditions were examined using a scanning electron microscope.

  • Of those off-road diesel engines, the railroad diesel rolling stocks (RDRS) for passenger and freight transportation become a growing issue since they are emitting enormous amounts of various air pollutants. Furthermore, up to the present time, emissions from these sources are not well controlled. One of main purposes in this study is to develop emission factors for the RDRS and to estimate a total amount of major air pollutants from the RDRS in Korea. Prior to develop a Korean mode emission factor, the emission factor from the USEPA was simply applied for comparative studies. As a conclusion, based on the emissions calculated from both the USEPA mode and the KoRail mode, the RDRS is considered as one of significant mobile sources of major air pollutants including NOx and CO, and thus management plans and control strategies for the RDRS must be established to improve air quality near. future in Korea.

  • It is necessary to have a maintenance of track and its equipment for safety and s the railroad transportation. In the paper, we examine the safety problems, protecti and composition of protection system for safety within the track which RTRI develo system consists of a mobile business tool carried by each worker. a terminal of t platform temporarily installed in the maintenance car. a connector attached to signalling system and a central administrative device installed at the control cen used independently to detect positions of workers and maintenance cars. Each m correctly grasp the geometrical relations with other workers cars and other objects conditions based on the state information exchanged between the machines by the control protocol. the track occupancy monitor information broadcast by th administrative device and the line information. The protection system executes its f this basic structure.

  • This paper describes the result of structure analysis and load test of body structure. The purpose of the analysis and test is to evaluate an safety which body structure shall be considered fully sufficient rigidity so as to satisfy proper system function under maximum load and operating condition. Material of body structure applied an aluminum alloy.   • With increasing concerns of indoor air quality, $CO_2$ concentration in the public transportation, such as train, bus, and subway, draws big interests. The $CO_2$ concentration in the indoor air is regarded as index of ventilation status rather than that of adverse health effect. In this study, we measured the time-series of $CO_2$ concentrations in the KTX cabin during the journey of Gyongbu-line (Seoul-Busan) and Honam-line (Seoul-Mokpo) with the number of passengers on board. At the same time, the concentration of particulate matter (PM), temperature, humidity and gaseous pollutants including HCHO and VOCs were monitored. It is found that the $CO_2$ concentration was correlated linearly with number of passengers and was highly correlated with tunnel regions where the ventilation unit (flap) was closed.

  • Before the Flap type GATE is introduced until, the Turnstile type GATE was plentifully used. The Turnstile type GATE is used plentifully from the Seoul metro, Busan Transportation Corporation and Korea Railroad Corporation. From the Turnstile type GATE, the micro switch breakdown is occurred by the contact of the micro switch which perceives a Turnstile rotation and the cam. The breakdown is cause of the passenger inconveniently. In order to prevent the breakdown which is caused by Micro switch contact, Microswitch support used the sensor in Turnstile rotation perception. The sensor which is used in test is Photo Sensor and Reed Sensor two type. The test result Reed Sensor was suitable in underground environment.   • Subway line becomes an important way of transportation as road traffic goes to limit. Recently the large number of passengers of the subway lines near metropolitan area, In-Cheon, Su-Won, Pyung-Teak and Chon-An, is rapidly increasing. The electric cars of the No. 1 subway line in the suburbs are now running fast compared to the downtown area. However, the fast electric car can be uncomfortable to ride in, because there are so much noise and vibration. In this research, the running characteristics of the electric car of the No. 1 subway line in the suburbs is investigated through the measurements of the noise and vibration at running condition.

  • As Kyoto protocol has been effective in 2005, the reduction of $CO_2$ emission is a global urgent problem. In Korea, the $CO_2$ emission of transportation increases continuously, which can be solved partially by the use of railroad. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate exactly the $CO_2$ emission of railroad through life cycle approach. In this study, the $CO_2$ emission of electric motor unit (EMU) was evaluated with its carboy material using life cycle inventory analysis (LCIA). Among the life cycles of EMU, $CO_2$ emission was the highest in the running phase. As the total weight of EMU was lowered, $CO_2$ emission was reduced. In conclusion, the light-weighting of EMU can reduce $CO_2$ emission efficiently.

  • Metro Subway System is widely known as the leader of public transportation in a metropolitan area. The signal interlocking is one of the most important organs that plays a major role in the system. By improving the quality of signal lights on the traffic system and keeping its maintenance on a high level will not only repair the current state, but it will also let the LED type signal semi-permanent. The device, which underwent a process of fine manufacture establishment and a close examination, obtained a patented article (2004, as a new device). Utilizing the equipment with cautious preservation on the system will enhance the current state of the signal device. Especially, the test for improvement and development based upon the technique that decreases the frequency of defect produced will further precipitate its efficiency. With authorization of imposing the LED lights on production, installment, and investigation of the system, the newly made equipment will bring improvement to the signal technology and to the industry at largest extent.

  • Presently metro in our county has higher rate of passengers as a public transportation of urban area than other transportations. And road is under very restrictive condition to be expanded in many aspects because the streets are completely choked. Therefore increase of capacity in metro and reduction of headway has been seriously required and utmost efforts has been taken by related fields to meet the requirements. The concept of CBTC system came out from this background. CBTC system can be implemented to detect the train location without using the track circuits. It has many advantages in aspects of signalling equipments build-up and maintenance. This study investigated examples of radio communication system and applicable standard norms in other countries. And it also reviewed the suggestion for the establishment of radio frequency and radio network to be considered for application train control system by radio under Korean metro environment.
