Fatigue Crack Growth and Fracture behavior of Rail Steels

  • Contact fatigue damages on the rail surface, such as head checks and squats are a growing problem. The fatigue cracks forming on the contact surface grow according to load and lubricating conditions and may end up breaking the rail. Rail fracture can be avoided by preventing the cracks from reaching the critical length. Therefore, the crack growth rate needs to be estimated precisely according to the conditions of the track and load to develop a maintenance plan against rail damages. Therefore, it is important to understand the mechanism of cracks initiation and growth on a rail due to repetitive rolling contact. In this study, we have investigated the crack growth behavior on the rail surface by using the twin-disc tests and the finite element analysis.

재래식 철도소음 특성 (Characteristics of Conventional Railroad Noise)

  • The railroad noise has been considered as one of environment pollution and complaints about it have been increasing every year. Therefore, the establishment of railroad noise monitoring network is necessary. It will be designed for monitoring railroad noise, storing data of railroad noise continuously and providing the fundamental knowledge for the measures of railroad noise. For this, we investigated the actual condition and status of railroad noise according to distance around Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju, and Busan. This paper shows the basic data that will be used for predicting the noise level near railroad in the environmental impact assessment.

  • Seoul subway is an safety, quick, and clean public transportation to secure citizens safety. One of the most important elements of train is optimizing railroad function and need to conform railroad inspection for function maintenance. Railroad is the most biggest part of the railroad facility and it is a structure which requires sustainable maintenance. The purpose of study is to improve domestic metropolitan railroad facility inspection method and period. For this, we refer documents about present roving method, roving members and period of railroad roving. In addition, analyzed problems of railroad roving investigation method and period by examining the type and standards of railroad investigation and interviewing experts. By this, we analyzed improving plan and expectations of railroad maintenance and repair operation.

  • Due to the reduction of greenhouse gases and a sharp increase in the energy prices the world over, there is a growing interest in the railroad transport. In particular, in the case of containers which are the major item of railroad transport, a need for the switchover from the road transport to the railroad transport is being suggested, however, it is understood that the extent of the switchover occurring is only marginal. There exist many causes that account for the marginal extent of the switchover to the railroad transport. Some of them have to be dealt with at the policy level and efforts are needed to make it more efficient to use the railroad than other means of transport by improving railroad logistics facilities. Thus, the present study seeks to examine the possible measures for improving the railroad logistics facilities to promote the railroad transport.

  • Effective management strategies of railroad environment should be prepared by the systematic management with the environment core technologies from the initial stage of the railroad environment to provide energy-efficient, safe, sound, and environment-friendly railroad service. In addition, the need for the development of railroad environment policy, like the improvement strategies and development strategies of railroad environment, is strongly required to actively prepare for the strengthening of environment regulations and supervision on the railroad environment problems. In this research, we studied the correlations between railroad environment policies and management strategies, and defined the component of environment policies. Moreover, we tried to present the direction of environment policies and mid-/long-term development plans that suit for the characteristics of Korean railroad through investigating the environmental policies of advanced countries.

  • It is a plan the government increases a railroad section SOC investment, and to activate railroad construction while a railroad wins the spotlight with green transportation. But an error of the demand forecast that is a base of a railroad investment evaluation follows in occurring big, there is it with an operation with an obstacle of a railroad investment. Case of the Incheon International Airport Railroad which went into operation recently, While a present transportation demand showed about 10% than a demand forecasted in a past conference, it was magnified in a social problem. A lot of research was gone on in road project about traffic demand forecast and error, a study to find out the error cause is an insufficient situation although errors of a railroad occurs big. So, this study looked for errors and causes about trip generation model and modes sharing model of railroad demand forecast but it was defined causes so that it can occur similar problems in the future. Especially it investigated causes after comparing rate of development plan for the realization and O/D size in trip generation model and after comparing rate of modes sharing of past and current and conducting a survey for airport users. In conclusion, it suggested method to reduce errors of railroad demand forecasting in the future.

  • 철도는 이제 대표적인 대중교통 수단이다. 하지만, 철도를 운영하는 운영기관마다 철도정보를 관리하고, 서비스를 제공하고 있다. 즉, 철도 운영기관 별로 관리하고, 서비스하는 정보와 정보의 형태가 다르기 때문에, 철도이용객은 정확하고, 통합된 정보를 제공받지 못하게 된다. 따라서 다양한 형태의 역사정보, 운영정보, 열차정보, 이용객정보와 같은 철도정보를 단일화된 표준철도정보로 통합하기 위한 방안이 필요하다. 이에, 본 연구에서는 각 운영기관에 산재해 있는 철도정보에 대한 표준분류체계 및 표준정보를 정의하고, 표준정보로의 시스템적 수집 및 마이그레이션 방법을 고찰하였다. 이를 통해, 철도이용객은 실시간으로 모든 철도정보를 한 번에, 한 눈에, 한 곳에서 이용할 수 있으며, 이러한 체계적이고 통합적인 철도정보 관리는 새로운 서비스를 창출할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고, 철도 정보서비스를 획기적으로 발전시킬 수 판단된다.

폐타이어의 철도진동 저감효과에 대한 실험적 연구 (Reduction Effect of Railroad Vibration by Utilizing Waste Tires)

  • This paper describes the results of a series of field experiments which are carried out to assess the reduction effect of railroad vibration by utilizing waste tires. The ground vibration due to train service is measured in Honam Railroad line and Kyongbu Railroad line to assess the ground vibration with the domestic railroad line and train type before field model test. From the results of these tests, frequency on train service is presented from 5Hz to 100Hz and a range of excellence frequency is presented to be about from 20Hz to 40Hz in the domestic railroad line. Also, plate bearing tests are conducted to evaluate the variation of bearing capacity with different thickness of the waste tire layer and the fill layer. Finally, field model test is performed by using tire chips ($5cm{\times}5cm$ in size) as a reduction material of railroad vibration. The reduction effect of railroad vibration by utilizing waste tires increases with increasing the thickness of the waste tire layer and the frequency of the vibration source. The results of this experimental study was shown that the waste tire can be used for reduction of the railroad vibration.

철도이용수요에 따른 선로용량 변화 분석 연구 (A Study on Railroad Track Capacity According to Transit Railway Demand)

  • It is very important that the calculation of railroad track capacity in infrastructure investment analysis and train operation planning. The dwelling time is one of the factors that influence in railroad track capacity. Current research in dwelling time has been focusing on theoretical investigation, the state of the research in effective variable (dwelling time etc) is insufficient. In this paper, we clearly draw the concept of railroad track capacity and the estimate on modeling of relationship railway demand and dwelling time. Also, we compare and analyze the variation of railroad track capacity according to transit railway demand in Gyeongin Line (Guro~Inchon). This paper is expected to contribute for improving on the in-using equations and methods in train operation planning as well as for improving level of service on railway user.

철도종합안전심사제도 개선을 위한 해외 심사제도 분석 (The Investigation of the Overseas Audit Systems for the Improvement of the Integrated Railroad Safety Audit System)

  • Recently the assurance of railroad safety is very important issue in KOREA because there are lots of changes in the railroad industries. The Railway Safety Act was established in order to cope with these changes effectively and prevent the railroad transportation accidents. According to this law, Korea Transportation Safety Authority (KOTSA) has been entrusted with 'Integrated Railroad Safety Audit (IRSA)' and has implemented the safety audit to the railroad operation agencies such as Korea Railroad (KORAIL) and the railroad facility management organization such as the Korea Rail Network Authority (KR Network). The target of IRSA is to establish the effective rail safety management system and to raise the safety level of the railroad operation and facility agencies by checking synthetically their performance of safety duties with sincerity according to the Railway Safety Act. The purpose of this paper is to improve the efficiency of IRSA by the comparative research between IRSA and other similar safety audit system. To study the efficiency of IRSA, we investigated the rail safety audit systems of EU system specially France, England where the big changes have happened for the rail operation concepts and Japan where government entity control the railroad safety. The international standards of Occupational Health & Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS 18001), Quality Management System (ISO 9001) and Guidelines for Quality and/or Environmental Management Systems Auditing (ISO 19011) are investigated.
