Load Factor Decrease In The Seoul Metro Circle Line through Analyzing Passenger OD Demand (2호선 혼잡구간 OD수요 분리유도를 통한 혼잡도 개선 방안 (교통카드 빅데이터 분석을 중심으로))

  • This study proposes a policy for urban railway travel demand management system in order to decrease the load factor of the Seoul metro Circle line, particularly for the segment between Sadang and Samsung stations, through analyzing the transit smart card data. We propose mixed train operations of the existing Circle line and a line that goes toward Samsung station in order to transport passengers that have two distinct groups: those with the destination of Samsung station and those with destinations after Samsung station. The introduction of a mixed train operation that encourages passengers passing through Samsung station to take a Circle line train will decrease the congested load factor by 11.3% during the morning peak hours using the mixed train operation of the Circle and Samsung lines. This policy could be an effective method to decrease the load factor and improve the comfort of rail passengers without extra investment in the railway facilities.

  • This research uses public transportation card data to analyze the inter-regional transfer times, transfer frequencies, and transfer resistance that passengers experience during transit amongst the metropolitan public transportation modes. Currently, mode transfers between bus and rail are recorded up to five times during one transit movement by Trip Chain, facilitating greater comprehension of intermodal movements. However, lack of information on what arises during these transfers poses a problem in that it leads to an underestimation of transfer resistances on the Trip Chain. As such, a path choice model that reflects passenger movements during transit activities is created, which attains explanatory power on transfer resistance through its inclusion of transfer times and frequencies. The methodology adopted in this research is to first conceptualize the idea of metropolitan public transportation transfer, and in the case that mode transfers include the city-rail, to newly conceptualize the idea of transfer resistance using transportation card data. Also, the city-rail path choice model within the Trip Chain is constructed, with transfer time and frequency used to reevaluate transfer resistance. Further, in order to align bus and city-rail station administrative level small-zone coordinates to state and regional level mid-zone coordinates, the big node methdod is utilized. Finally, case studies on trip chains using at least one transfer onto the city-rail is used to determine the validity of the results obtained.

Examining Access Mode Choice Behavior of Local Metropolitan High-Speed Rail Station - A Case Study of Dong-Daegu Station - (고속철도 지방대도시 정차역의 연계교통수단 선택모형 구축에 관한 연구 - 동대구역을 사례로 -)

  • This study aimed to analyze access mode choice behavior for KTX Passengers. To fulfill the aims of this study, Dong-Daegu Station was selected as a station for a case study. This study takes place in two stages. These are (i) descriptive statistical analysis of transportation status before and after introduction of the KTX, (ii) empirical model estimation for analyzing access mode choice behavior. This study makes use of the data from travel survey from Daegu metropolitan area. The main part of the survey was carried out in the KTX Dong-Daegu station. The data was collected from a sample of 1,800 individuals. The survey data includes the information on travel from Dong-Daegu station to Seoul. From descriptive statistical analysis of transportation status before and after introduction of the KTX, it is found that revealed demand of the KTX is lower than that expected. Moreover, it is found that the low demand of the KTX stems from high cost for the KTX itself and inconvenience( including travel time and cost) of access mode. In order to analyze mode choice behavior for accessing Dong-Daegu station, multinomial logit model structure is used. For the model specification, a variety of behavioral assumptions about the factors which affect the access mode choice, were considered. From the empirical model estimation, it si found that access travel time and access travel cost are significant in choosing access mode. Given the empirical evidence, we see that improvement of access transportation system for Dong-Daegu station is very important for enhancing the use of KTX.

  • There are lots of examples for naming railway lines and stations in Korea. In general, we can specify some type of principles for making names at the railway lines. The first, rail line name made some decision considering the origin and destination name of city or region. The second type of a decision making is the location or service areas of that railway line or station. And other one is about the destination city or region of that corridor line. In this paper, we classified the name of the railway line according to above three types of decision principles, and then suggested the guideline and future directions preventing any confusion to make a new railway line name afterwards.

  • A turnout which permits trains to pass from one track to another has a disconnecting rail component, namely a crossing, so that noise and vibration arc occurred abruptly when train is passing through it. In Korea, it is planned to adopt the high speed tilting train, which operates at the speed of 180 km/h, at the conventional line. However, for application of the tilting train, it is prerequisite to establish the stable turnout system allowing the tilting train to pass through it without reducing speed. This study was performed to evaluate noise and vibration emitted from the prototype turnout which is developed for speed-up of the conventional line. For the purpose, noise and vibration were measured at near the conventional turnout and the improved one, which is constructed at Waegwan station and Kumi station of Gyeongbu line, respectively.

  • Accumulated deficits resulting from managing the Korean Railroad and debts from the construction of the KTX (Korea Train Express which is a high-speed rail system) have left the Korean Railroad faced with great troubles. Since it changed into a public corporation Korail on January 1st, 2005, the Korea Railroad has been making unceasing efforts to overcome the troubles and improve its management. However, even these efforts haven't worked in the face of the improved conditions of other transportation methods such as better networks of land roads and air ways. The Korea Railroad had its revenue from its railway transportation limited, and has tried to expand its business to non-transportational areas. In some metropolitan cities, the Korea Railroad made investments in real estate by constructing station buildings based on private money. Yet, in small and medium size cities, the Korea Railroad has little particular strategic projects for business development. Recently certain small and medium size regional cities began to plan on business developments for the ex-railway land, and some small towns have developed real estate on the ex-railway land. Nevertheless, there have been no systematic case studies to classify these real estate developments.

  • Subway system including light-rail transit system is the representative public urban transportation. Accordingly, Nothing is more important than the safety operation as well as passengers' convenience. Due to the fire disaster of Daegu subway on 2003, more strict regulations of detecting fire and of conducting on emergency circumstances. However, regardless of this improved management, it was reported that installations of lots of fire-detection facilities may be harm than good to operate subway system due to frequent malfunction of some fire-detection facilities. It may cause mis-alarm for fire and induces abnormal operation of subway due to the strict regulation; the train shall be stopped on emergency circumstances. Therefore, in this paper, new scheme on surveiling breaking-out-of fire in the station is suggested with new IT technologies, Wireless Sensor Network(WSN) and CCTVs. which were integrated with an intelligent software. This intelligent system enables to surveil breaking-out-of fire in real time through sensor network technology and watch the emergency site on CCTV as well. Through this system, subway organizers could cope with the emergency circumstance rapidly as well as judge precisely whether fire breaks out or not.

Design of an Absolute Location and Position Measuring System for a Mobile Robot

  • This paper focuses on a development of a sensor system measuring locations of a vehicle to localize a mobile robot while it tracks on the track (location sensor) . Also it focuses on a system configuration identifying the vehicle's orientation and distance from the object while it is stationary at certain station (position sensor) . As for the location sensor it consists of a set of sensors with a combined guiding and counting sensor, and an address-coded sensor to localize the vehicle while moving on the rail. For the position sensor a PSD (Position Sensitive Device) sensor with photo-switches sensor to measure the offset and orientation of the vehicle at each station is introduced. Both sensor systems are integrated with a microprocessor as a data relay to the main computer controlling the vehicle. The location sensor system is developed and its performance for a mobile robot is verified by experiments. The position measuring system is proposed and is robust to the environmental variation. Moreover, the two kinds of sensor systems guarantee a low cost application and high reliability.

  • Recently heavy traffic is getting worse because increasing population of transportation in urban area. In order to solve this problem. subway is realized with high speed, high density, highly efficiency. When fire accident happened in Dae-Gu subway in February 2003, there happened loss of people and lots of damage because of not being able to control even though fire alarm which was set up in the station rang. This thesis has constructed a simulation integrating operation system using a Database construction, operating program analysis in order to build up the most efficient train operation system. The result of simulation integrating operation system with emergency virtual situation like station and train fire, train failure, power line failure, all trains running on the rail were secured safety by train operation control system. With integrating operation of each train control system, train system, power system, machine facility system, the most efficient integrating operation system should have been constructed at the time the subway fire and power failure broke out.

  • 1974. 8.15 SeoulMetro, beginning with the first electric railway established at six cities, so it is managing mass transportation of traffic. Especially, in case of seoul, It is managing that from one to eight lines, 286.9km, 265 stations have installed and now it is carrying about 5.5million of passengers everyday, and 2,000million passengers a year. So accident is increasing from the station every year. For this measure, SeoulMetro prepares safety fence for passengers crash but, as suicides or people who watch the accident took place, for at the bottom of passengers crash protection, PSD installing is needed. Even though, PSD is managing ATO section but, in controlling SeoulMetro, one to four lines sections are (ATS, ATC)section. Between as ATS, ATC section, ATO section, subway gate and PSD must have opened and crossed always at the time. And the interlock control corrosion protection gate, managing skills with installation, method, using in history, apply to 10rail cars one train sets, and maximum applying 224% sections of passengers congested that consideration is to be needed. So 2004, SeoulMetro improved technology and basic design of PSD at ATS section. Based on this, from 2005.4 to 2006.6, using subway 2lines per 12stations set the model installation(full type 11stations, half type 1station) After installing in case of success, it is going about to suggest that effective analysis and hereafter subject.
