The biggest challenge bridge agencies face is the maintenance of bridges, keeping them safe and serviceable, with limited funds. To maintain the bridges effectively, there is and urgent need to predict their remaining life from a system reliability viewpoint. In this paper, a model using lifetime functions to evaluate the overall system probability of survival of a rail road bridge is proposed. In this model, the rail load bridge is modeled as a system. Using the model, the lifetime of the rail road bridge is predicted.
In railway bridges, various loads including train load, transverse load and braking force are applied to continuous CWR or semi-continuous longer rail located on non-continuous bridge superstructures. The rail-girder interaction due to thermal expansion is also very complex in railway bridges because the thermal characteristics for each of the rails and girder are quite different. Recently, the bridge retrofits for seismic loads were performed on bridges not designed for these loads. These retrofits may however have limitations with respect to rail-girder interactions because, in general these retrofits address issues related only to seismic loads. In this study of seismic evaluations for railway bridges, the load effects on the bridge rails from the road beds through the continuous rails shall be considered. Practical methods will be proposed which will increase the railway stability. For this, rail-girder interaction analyses due to train loads, temperature changes and seismic loads were performed and the results reviewed from a practical point of view.
To investigate the nonlinear aerostatic stability of the Hutong cable-stayed rail-cum-road bridge with ultra-kilometer main span, a FEM bridge model is established. The tri-component wind loads and geometric nonlinearity are taken into consideration and discussed for the influence of nonlinear parameters and factors on bridge resistant capacity of aerostatic instability. The results show that the effect of initial wind attack-angle is significant for the aerostatic stability analysis of the bridge. The geometric nonlinearities of the bridge are of considerable importance in the analysis, especially the effect of cable sag. The instable mechanism of the Hutong Bridge with a steel truss girder is the spatial combination of vertical bending and torsion with large lateral bending displacement. The design wind velocity is much lower than the static instability wind velocity, and the structural aerostatic resistance capacity can meet the requirement.
A distribution method of limited budget for rail line facility improvement is to use investment priorities of rail line segments based on their deterioration. In this paper we present an evaluation method of rail line segment deterioration which can be used to distribute limited budget. Rail line facilities include rail track, crossing, road bed, bridge, tunnel. These facilities deterioration and line shape can affect line segment deterioration. Deterioration evaluation method we present is a weighted sum of each component deterioration scores. The component weight can be obtained from experts using analytic hierarchy process.
A comprehensive analysis of wheel force spectrum is conducted to provide the KTX safety evaluation with structural behaviour of Pre-Stressed Concrete (PSC) box bridge due to various high speeds. The wheel spectrum for KTX locomotive running over road and PSC bridge tracks is compared using irregular track responses with numerical models of 170m approach road track and 40m span length of PSC box bridge The high-speed railway locomotive is used as 38-degree of freedom system. Three displacements (vertical, lateral, and longitudinal) and three rotational components (pitching, rolling, and yawing) for one car-body and two bogies are considered in the 38-degree of freedom model. Three dimensional frame element of finite element method (FEM) is used to model of the simply supported PSC box bridge. The irregulation of rail-way is derived using the experiential spectrum density function under assumption of twelve level tracks conditions based on the normal probability procedure. The dynamic analyses by Runge-Kutta method which are able to analyze the high frequency wheel force spectrum. A dynamic behaviour of KTX due to high speeds until 450km/h developing speed with relative time is analysed and compared the characteristics running over the road and PSC box bridge tracks. Finally, the KTX integrated evaluation method of safety between high speed train and bridge is presented.
Nowadays, most of bridge networks are complete or close to completion. The biggest challenge railroad./highway agencies and departments of transportation face is the maintenance of these networks, keeping them safe and serviceable, with limited funds. To maintain the bridges effectively, there is an urgent need to predict their remaining life from a system reliability viewpoint. And, it is necessary to develop the maintenance models based on system reliability concept. In this paper, maintenance models are developed for preventive maintenance and essential maintenance by using system reliability and lifetime distributions. The proposed model is applied to an existing railroad bridge. The optimal maintenance strategy of this bridge is obtained in terms of services life extension and cumulative maintenance cost.
According to introduce KTX in Korea, rail-road bridge section of KTX was increased approximately 50% of the total length. Bridge is required periodic inspection and check to prevent accident and hazard because various damage which have effects on traffic and replacement of damaged parts is difficult. Specifically, the train as large-scale transportation because accidents led to great damage, preventing these accidents are critical. Well-organized management and maintenance systems are required to prevent the accidents. In the case of roadway bridge, bridge inspection vehicle is used to deploy inspectors in roadway bridge. However, this method requires a lot of time and efforts, and inspectors are exposed to potential hazard. Also, surrounding environment like poor lighting system or electric wire could harm the inspector while repairing. Due to this reason, automatic repairing and inspecting system have been introduced to replace the old methods. Management system of the railroad bridge track for trains uses various advanced equipments, but whereas roadway bridge management system is lacking these efforts. As a result of that, this study looks over the existing management method. and review the method to apply the Bridge Inspection Robot in railroad bridge. Moreover, this study suggests future management technology using inspection robot.
The Transitional zone between bridge abutment and earthwork is one of the representative vulnerable zones in railway where differential settlements may take place due to the different supportive stiffness. Although transitional zones are managed with stricter standards than those of the other earthwork zones either in the design and construction stages, it is very difficult to prevent differential settlement perfectly. A three-dimensional numerical analyses were performed by applying train moving load in this study. The analytical model including abutments and earthwork zones was constituted with rail, sleepers, track concrete layer (TCL), hydraulic stabilized base (HSB), reinforced road bed, and road bed using railway and road base structure. The clamp connecting the rail and sleeper were also modeled as the element with spring coefficient. The train wheel is modeled in the actual size and moved on the rail with 300 km/hr speed. The deformation characteristics at each point of the rail and the ground were considered in detail when moving the train wheel. The analysis results were compared with those from the two-dimensional analysis without considering moving load. The research results show that displacement and stress were greater in the three-dimensional analysis than in other analyses, and the three-dimensional analysis with moving load should be performed to evaluate railway performance.
In this study, we have studied rail infrastructure related to emergency action to manage the risk when emergency caused by faults of facility or rail vehicle during operation happens. Especially we have compared the effect of emergency action with examining the structure of vehicle, tunnel, bridge and access road, etc which are related to emergency action. Also, we have tried to analyze effects of radio and communication equipment, lifesaving and refuge which could be used for rolling stock, station, control room, tunnel, bridge and etc, and we have presented the way of reporting the emergency to the train driver or crew, control room, outside networks which could be used by passengers in vehicle, station, railroad line. Based on these, we have analyzed the conduct of emergency action in length of time when emergency happens in railway and high-speed railway, and studied the method of which passengers could be guided safely and escape from the scene of the accident.
Long-span cable-supported bridges are flexible structures vulnerable to unsymmetric loadings such as railway traffic and strong wind. The torsional dynamic response of long-span cable-supported bridges under running trains and/or strong winds may deform the railway track laid on the bridge deck and affect the running safety of trains and the comfort of passengers, and even lead the bridge to collapse. Therefore, it is eager to figure out the torsional dynamic response of long-span cable-supported bridges under running trains and/or strong winds. The Tsing Ma Bridge (TMB) in Hong Kong is a suspension bridge with a main span of 1,377 m, and is currently the world's longest suspension bridge carrying both road and rail traffic. Moreover, this bridge is located in one of the most active typhoon-prone regions in the world. A wind and structural health monitoring system (WASHMS) was installed on the TMB in 1997, and after 17 years of successful operation it is still working well as desired. Making use of one-year monitoring data acquired by the WASHMS, the torsional dynamic responses of the bridge deck under rail traffic and strong winds are analyzed. The monitoring results demonstrate that the differences of vertical displacement at the opposite edges and the corresponding rotations of the bridge deck are less than 60 mm and $0.1^{\circ}$ respectively under weak winds, and less than 300 mm and $0.6^{\circ}$ respectively under typhoons, implying that the torsional dynamic response of the bridge deck under rail traffic and wind loading is not significant due to the rational design.
