Monitoring of Sulfur Dioxide Residue in Commercial Medicinal Herbs in Seoul (2010) (2010년 서울지역 유통 한약재의 잔류이산화황 함량 모니터링)

  • This study was investigated to determine the contents of sulfur dioxide residues in medicinal herbs in Seoul Yang Nyoung Shi in 2010 (1,522 samples of 189 kinds). Samples were measured by modified Monier-Williams method. of the total samples, 618 samples (84 kinds) were domestic, and 904 samples (158 kinds) were imported. The content of sulfur dioxide in the domestics showed the range of 0.0 to 1,298.0 mg/kg (average 12.7 mg/kg), while those in imported samples were the range of 0.0 to 3,982.2 mg/kg (average 42.4 mg/kg). The average (mg/kg) amount of sulfur dioxide by parts in medicinal herbs was as follows; Tuber 122.3, Radix 69.3, Rhizoma 37.4, Cortex 33.3, Fructus 8.8, Ramulus 4.9, Semen 4.6, Folium 3.4, Flos 2.7, Perithecium 1.4. of the total samples (1,522), 52 samples (3.4%) were violated the KFDA regulatory guidance of sulfur dioxide. Among these 52 unsuitable samples, 16 samples (7 kinds) were domestic, and 36 samples (23 kinds) were imported. Approximately 88.1% of the total samples was less than 10 mg/kg of sulfur dioxide and 6.3% of the total samples showed more than 30 mg/kg of sulfur dioxide.

  • The total synthesis of a norneolignan isolated from Ratanhia, 5-(3-hydroxypropyl)-2-(2'-methoxy-4'-hydroxyphenyl)benzofuran (8), is described. The key steps contain the one-pot reaction for a 2-arylbenzofuran 6 from methyl 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate with 2-chloro-2-methylthio-(2'-methoxy-4'-acetoxy)acetophenone (5) in the presence of $ZnCl_2$, and reductive desulfurization of the resulting product 6.

  • Essential oil of the root of Angelica koreana Max. (Umbelliferae) was investigated. Essential oil was obtained from the dried roots by steam distillation and fractionated by column chromatography. Each isolate or fraction was identified by GC, GC-MS and spectral analysis. It was found to contain nine monoterpenes such as ${\alpha}-pinene$(7.0%), camphene, ${\beta}-pinene$, myrcene, ${\alpha}-phellandrene$, ${\Delta}-3-carene$, p-cymene, limonene(2.8%), terpinolene and also found to contain m-cresol(11.6%), citronellol, citral b, methylcinnamate, eudesmol and osthol. 2-Hydroxy-5-methylacetophenone and twelve compounds were tentatively identified.

Study on the Components of Glehniae Radix (해방풍의 성분연구)

  • Substances $I{\sim}VII$ are isolated from the root of Glehnia littoralis which has been often used as a subsitute of Bang-Poong in Korea. White needle crystalline substance of $C_{29}H_{50}O$, m.p. $137{\sim}139^{\circ}C$ was confirmed as ${\beta}-sitosterol$ through elemental analysis, derivative synthesis, IR and physicochemical tests. Moreover, it was concluded that white needle crystal of $C_{12}H_{8}O_{4}$, m.p. $188{\sim}189^{\circ}$ was confirmed as bergapten, through a contrast test with standard substance and by UV and IR-spectra. It was found that substance III and VII coincided with the Rf values of imperatorin and umbelliferone and to its colors under the UV-ray, and its similarity to UV-spectrum can be recognized, but their melting points are remarkedly different respectively.

  • 디지털 통신 시스템 및 신호처리 회로의 핵심 연산블록으로 사용될 수 있는 복소수 승산기 코어의 파라미터화된 소프트 IP (Intellectual Property)를 설계하였다. 승산기는 응용분야에 따라 요구되는 비트 수가 매우 다양하므로, 승산기 코어 IP는 비트 수를 파라미터화하여 설계하는 것이 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 복소수 승산기의 비트 수를 파라미터화 함으로써 사용자의 필요에 따라 승수와 피승수를 8-b∼24-b 범위에서 2-b 단위로 선택하여 사용할 수 있도록 하였으며, GUI 환경의 코어 생성기 PCMUL_GEN는 지정된 비트 크기를 갖는 복소수 승산기의 VHDL 모델을 생성한다. 복소수 승산기 코어 IP는 redundant binary (RB) 수치계와 본 논문에서 제안하는 새로운 radix-4 Booth 인코딩/디코딩 회로를 적용하여 설계되었으며, 이를 통해 기존의 방식보다 단순화된 내부 구조와 고속/저전력 특성을 갖는다. 설계된 IP는 Xilinx FPGA로 구현하여 기능을 검증하였다.

Screening of Antimicrobial Activity among the Therapeutic Herbal Extracts on Dental Pathogens

  • The periodontal diseases and dental caries are major infectious diseases in oral cavity. Many of the preventive and therapeutic dental products contain the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory components. But some of these antimicrobial have weak points such as coloration, burning sensation and insolubility in water. We have screened the therapeutic herbal extracts of the Plant Extract Bank for the antimicrobial activity on the major dental pathogens by growth inhibition assay. For the Porphyromonas gingivalis, 8 herbal extracts had an antimicrobial activity, 11 herbal extracts for the Prevotella intermedia, 43 herbal extracts for the Haemophilus actinomycetemcomitans and 61 herbal extracts for the Streptococcus mutans. Among these extracts, 6 herbal extracts had an antimicrobial activity for more than 3 species of dental pathogens. These extracts are Araliae Cordatae Radix, Crassirhizomae Rhizoma, Mori Radicis Cortex, Psoraleae Semen, Pini Ramulus and Sieges- beckiae Herba. All of effective extracts were CA group, ethanol extracts. Among these 6 herbal extracts, only Crassirhizomae is known to have a antibacterial effects. Therefore these herbal extracts have a possibility to be a candidate for a major antibacterial components in dental products.

  • The total 31 prescriptions of Gok Dal(穀疸), recorded in all the medical books, were investigated. The results are as follows 1. The most used prescription of Gok Dal(穀疸) was INJINHOTANG(茵蔯蒿湯). The next ones are GOKDALHUAN(穀疸丸), SOONJUNGTANG(小溫中湯). 2. The total 79 kinds of medicines were prescribed for Gok Dal(穀疸). Fructus Gardeniae(梔子) was the most popular medicine and Herba Artemisiae Scopariae(茵蔯), Radix et Rhizoma(大黃), Pericar pium Citri NobiLis Viride(靑皮), Rhizoma Atractyloclis(蒼朮) follows. 3. Chung Youl(淸熱) medicines was the most popularly medicines, Sam Sub Li Su(渗濕利水) medicines. Pa Juk Chu(破積聚) medicine So Do(消導) medicine follows. 4. Compared to other jaundices, Gok Dal(穀疸) has been cured by the case of Pa Juk Chu(破積聚) medicines, So Do(消導) medicines.

  • A new method of determination of fatty acid using gas chromatography-flame photometric detector (GC-FPD) is described. Fatty acid was methylthiomethyl-esterified with methylthiomethy chloride in 1,8-diazabicyclo [5,4,0]-undec-7-ene catalyst and its concentration measured by GC-FPD with 3%OV-1 or 3% FS-1 column. The FPD responses of thirteen fatty acid methylthiomethyl esters were examined and were proportional to the concentration of the esters without regard to their chemical structures. Consequently it was possible to determine various fatty acid using one standard calibration curve by GC-FPD. We could rapidly and conveniently determine varous fatty acids using one standard calibration curve by GC-FPD. We could rapidly and conveniently determine 13 fatty acids in Ginseng Radix alba by this method.

  • Flavonoids from plant origin show anti-inflammatory activity in vitro and in vivo. In addition to inhibition of inflammation-associated enzymes such as cyclooxygenases and lipoxygenases, they have been found to regulate the expression of inflammation-associated proteins from in vitro experiments. In order to prove in vivo behavior and the potential for beneficial use against inflammatory skin disorders, the effect of wogonin (5,7-dihydroxy-8-methoxyflavone) on in vivo expression of several inflammation-associated genes was examined in the intact as well as in the inflamed mouse skin by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction analysis.   • With increasing size of transformer-based neural networks, a light-weight algorithm and efficient AI accelerator has been developed to train these huge networks in practical design time. In this article, we present a survey of state-of-the-art research on the low-precision computational algorithms especially for floating-point formats and their hardware accelerator. We describe the trends by focusing on the work of two leading research groups-IBM and Seoul National University-which have deep knowledge in both AI algorithm and hardware architecture. For the low-precision algorithm, we summarize two efficient floating-point formats (hybrid FP8 and radix-4 FP4) with accuracy-preserving algorithms for training on the main research stream. Moreover, we describe the AI processor architecture supporting the low-bit mixed precision computing unit including the integer engine.
