  • This paper depicts the weak shock wave propagating inside some kinds of pipe bends. Computational work is to solve the two-dimensional, compressible, unsteady Euler Equations. The second-order TVD scheme is employed to discretize the governing equations. For the computations, the incident normal shock wave is assumed at the entrance of the pipe bend, and its Mach number is changed between 1.1 and 1.7. The turning angle and radius of the curvature of the pipe bend are changed to investigate the effects on the shock wave structure. The present computational results clearly show the shock wave reflection and diffraction occurring in the pipe bend. In particular, the vortex generation, which occurs at the edge of the bend, and its shedding mechanism are discussed in details.

  • In this study, we developed a new carrier finger to prevent scratches in a sheet metal forming line. The developed carrier finger was designed to have a streamlined shape with a larger radius of curvature at the edges, as well as a smaller contact area. To evaluate the scratch alleviation effect, a sliding contact analysis and scratch test using the pin on a plate wear tester were conducted for both the old and new carrier fingers. The results show that, for both transverse and longitudinal movements of the strip, the newly designed carrier finger reduces both the friction and scratch depth by its streamlined shape, which decreases the pressure spike at the edge.

  • It is very difficult to partially describe the hull shape made up of 3-dimensional free form surface. With computerizing skill in ship design, the geometric modeling technique has been developed. In hull shape modeling, the blending technique has not yet been adapted to the hull shape surface has a variable curvature. By adapting the blend surface, small surface on drawing plane is to be softly blended with given hull surface and a projecting part. This study has adapted to the ship design one of the blending methods by which offsets data of the blend surface can be obtained by the input of blend radius on two base surfaces.

  • In metal cutting the shape of generated chip varies according to cutting conditions, characteristics of workpiece and geometry of cutting tool. The best surface roughness of machined workpiece is obtained when generating flow type contrinuous chip. If the generated chip is not broken, that is not only tangled workpiece and cutting tool, but also may give damage on the machined surface of workpiece or danger for a operator. The flow type continuous chip may bring the low productivity in high speed any heavy cutting, automatic machining process and non-human factory. There are two type of chip break process ; controlling cutting condition and using chip breaker. In present study we carried out the experiment on new type chip breaker compared with conventional type and proved the efficiency of a new type and showed the chip break condition to be applied in actual metal cutting. In the experiment SM 20 C as a workpiece material and WC as a tool material were used and cutting speed of 30-150m/min, feed of 0.071-0.210mm/rev and depth of cut of 1mm were applied as cutting condition. The results of the experiment are as follows : (1) The mechanism of chip curl can be explained more clearly by plastic flow of workpiece material and moment of shearing force. (2) The most effective radius of curled chip and flat distance from cutting edge is 2.0-2.5mm and 1.5mm in both types. (3) The effective inclination angle of chip break surface and side cutting edge angle are 30.deg.- 45.deg. and 20.deg. in conventional type, while the radius of arc surface, lower arc angle A, upper arc angle B and side cutting edge angle are 3mm, 20.deg.- 45.deg., 0.deg.- 45.deg. and 10.deg.- 20.deg. in new type. (4) The probability to be obtained 100% chip breaking ratio is much higher in new type than in conventional type.

  • The development of pre-set wavelength G$\ddot{o}$rtler vortices are studied in the boundary-layer flows on concave surfaces of 1.0 and 2.0 m radius of curvature. The wavelengths of the vortices were pre-set by thin wires of 0.2 mm diameter placed 10 mm upstream and perpendicular to the concave surface leading edge. Velocity contours were obtained from velocity measurements using a single hot-wire anemometer probe. The most amplified or dominant wavelength is found to be 15 mm for free-stream velocity of 2.1 m/s and 3.0 m/s on the concave surface of R = 1 m and 2 m, respectively. The velocity contours in the cross-sectional planes at several streamwise locations show the growth and breakdown of the vortices. Three different regions can be identified based on the growth rate of the vortices. The occurrence of a secondary instability mode is also shown in the form of mushroom-like structures as a consequence of the non-linear growth of the G$\ddot{o}$rtler vortices. By pre-setting the vortex wavelength to be much larger and much smaller than the most amplified one, the splitting and merging of G$\ddot{o}$rtler vortices can be respectively observed.

  • In this paper. firstly, numerical results were compared with experimental results to verify accuracy of the results. It is found that the numerical results show good agreements with experimental result. Next, computations about flow within blades for design parameters such as radius of the pressure and suction side's curvature and pitch-chord ratio have been performed. It is found that the flow and performance characteristics mainly depend on shocks occurred at the leading edge of blades and the end of nozzle and separations occurred inside the flow passage. And shock of nozzle and separations depend upon area of flow passage and shocks of blade are affected by the number of blades occupied by a nozzle.

  • This paper presents an optimization method to determine the shoulder height of an angular contact ball bearing by 3D contact analysis using nondimensional-shaped variables. The load analysis of the ball bearing is performed to calculate the internal load distributions and contact angles of each rolling element. From the results of bearing load analysis and the contact geometry between the ball and inner/outer raceway, 3D contact analyses using influence function are conducted. The nondimensional shoulder height and nondimensional load are defined to give the generalized results. The relationship between the shoulder height and radius of curvature of the shoulder under various loading conditions is investigated in order to propose a design method for the two design parameters. Using nondimensional parameters, the critical shoulder heights are optimized with loads, contact angles, and conformity ratios. We also develop contour maps of the critical shoulder height as functions of internal loads and contact angles for the different contact angles using nondimensional parameters. The results show that the dimensionless shoulder height increased as the contact angle and dimensionless load increased. Conversely, when the conformity ratio increased, the critical shoulder height decreased. Therefore, if the contact angle is reduced and the conformity ratio is increased within the allowable range, it will be an efficient design to reduce the shoulder height of ball bearings.

  • This paper aims at investigating the effect of steel ratio and the magnitude of edge-ratio on the mechanical characteristics of reinforced concrete ring sector plate. The influence of steel bars was taken into account by coupling stiffness matrix of the steel bar element with that of the concrete plate element without dealing with separate element of steel bar and by establishing the composite stiffness matrix, which leads to the desirable result which does not increase th number of element could be obtained. Through case studies with 6 cases various steel ratios in ring sector plate supported at four edges and 4 cases with different open angles, the influence of the steel ratio was examined. A numerical analysis to find out the effect of the steel ratio d ue to above mentioned cases was carried out by 4 boundary conditions ; all edges clamped (B.C-1), all edges simply supported (B.C-2), curvilinear two edges clamped and other edges free (B.C-3) and curvilinear two edges simply supported and other edges free(B.C-4). The main results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. The effect of steel ratio on the magnitude of lateral deflection and x-directional bending moment at the center of sector plate and the midpoint of outer and inner curvilinear edges is almost the same up to $30^{\circ}$ of open angle. Beyond $30^{\circ}$ of the angle, the larger the angle, the greater the effect of ratio. 2. In design works using balanced steel ratio, the effect of steel bar can be ignored. But for larger open angles, especially greater than $90^{\circ}$, it proves desirable to consider the effect of steel bar. 3. The effect of the arc length of center circle/straight edge on lateral deflection and bending moment is remarkable in B.C-2. For larger open angle, the effect is also noted except for B.C-3 which turn out hardly affected. 4. The effect of the radius of curvature/straight side length on lateral deflection and x-directional bending moment is noted in B.C-2. As open angle increases, B.C-1 and B.C-3 almost agree and B.C-2 approaches B.C-4.

  • A finite element-based computer simulation of excimer laser susery was conducted to study some factors on the surgery. In particular, the radius of curvature at the apex of the cornea was examined under various surgical conditions. Corneal tissue was assumed to be a nearly incompressible, linear elastic, homogeneous, isotropic material under very small deformation. The geometry of the human cornea was taken from the experimental data[1]. The simulation utilized ANSYS(Swanson Analysis System Inc.Rev.4.4A). In this study, the major factors which affect the outcomes of the excimer laser surgery were investigated. First, two patterns of surgery with various surgery thickness(40-70micrometers) were examind. The pattern#1 describes the meridian from the apex to the edge of the surgery area to be straight. And the corresponding meridian of the pattern 2 can be expressed as a quardratic function. The results show that the pattern #2 is more realistic and effective. Then, the effects of other factors were investigated based on the pattern #2. Other factors are:various diameters of the surgical area (3-8 milimeters), Young's modules(3.5-4.5MPa), and depth of surgery at the apex(40-70micrometers). Compared with the computer simulation of the radial keratotomy surgery[2], the excimer laser surgery was proven to be more effective in treating myopia patients. In conculusion, the results of the simulation are qualitative agreement with clinical experience[3] indicating the potential of the finite element model of the surgery as a guideline to the surgeon before actual surgery.
