  • The diagnostic value of a intra oral film is related to projecting technic and interpretation. The intra-oral film is a single plane representation of a three dimensional object, therefore superimposition is inevitablly present. The purpose of this article is to show how foreign objects in the jaw may be localized. The author used double exposure technics, that are changed angulation of vertical or horizontal to one film. The obtained results are as fallow: 1. In the upper anterior region, the moving distance of the labially impacted reference object was greater than that of the palatally impacted one. 2. In the upper molar region, the moving distance of the mesiobuccal root apex was the greatest and that of palatal root apex was the shortest. 3. In the lower molar region, the change of the alveolar bone level in the buccal side was greater than that of lingual side.

  • Statement of problem. Initial stability of implant is an important factor for predicting osseointegration. It requires a rapid, non-invasive, user-friendly technique to frequently assess the implant stability and the degree of osseointegration. Purpose. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between the resonance frequency analysis (RFA) and the radiographic method for peri-implant bone change under in vitro conditions. Material and Method. Twenty implants of 3.75 mm in diameter(Neoplant, Neobiotech, Korea) were used. To simulate peri-implant bone change, 2 mm-deep $45^{\circ}$ range horizontal defect and 2 mm-deep $90^{\circ}$ range horizontal defect area were serially prepared perpendicular to the X-ray beam after conventional implant insertion. Customized film holding device was fabricated to standardize the projection geometry for serial radiographs of implants and direct digital image was obtained. ISQ values and gray values inside threads were measured before and after peri-implant bone defect preparation. Results. Within a limitation of this study, ISQ value of resonance frequency analysis was changed according to peri-implant bone change (p<0.05) and gray value of radiographic method was changed according to peri-implant bone change (p<0.05). There was no correlation between the ISQ value and the gray value for peri-implant bone change (p>0.05). But, in horizontal defect condition, relatively positive correlation were between ISQ and gray values(r=0.663). Conclusion. This results provided a possibility that peri-implant bone change may be evaluated by both RFA and radiographic method.

  • An accurate working length is an essential factor in the success of endodontic treatment. There are several methods for determining working length; electronic apex locator, tactile sense by clinician, and radiography. Among these methods, the most commonly used method is radiography. But this method requires excessive radiation, long developing time, and many equipments. In additon, it could give an image distortion and two dimensional image. To improve these disadvantages, an intraoral digital radiographic system (Digora$^{(R)}$) which use an imaging plate instead of a film, was developed. The purpose of this investigation was to compare Digora imaging with conventional radiography in determining the working length. Maxillary first or second molars of human dried skull were used. Files were inserted into canals at randomly selected lengths, from 2mm short of the radiographic apex to 2rnm beyond. Radiographs and Digora images(Digora positive and Digora negative) were evaluated to determine the adjustment needed to place the file 0.5mm from the radiographic apex. The results were as follows ; 1. There was no significant difference in accuracy between those evaluated in ${\pm}0.5mm$ and those accurately evaluated in the 3 images. 2. When comparing the accuracy of each image without distinguishing the 3 images, in the group accurately determined within ${\pm}0.5mm$, the mesiobuccal group showed significantly higher accuracy compared to the palatal group(p<0.05).

  • An accurate measurement of dose distribution is indispensable to perform radiation therapy planning. A measurement technique using a radiographic film, which is called a film dosimetry, is widely used because it is easy to obtain a dose distribution with a good special resolution. In this study, we tried to develop an analyzing system for the film dosimetry using usual office automation equipments such as a personal computer and an image scanner. A film was sandwiched between two solid water phantom blocks (30 ${\times}$ 30 ${\times}$ 15cm). The film was exposed with Cobalt-60 ${\gamma}$-ray whose beam axis was parallel to the film surface. The density distribution on the exposed film was stored in a personal computer through an image scanner (8bits) and the film density was shown as the digital value with NIH-image software. Isodose curves were obtained from the relationship between the digital value and the absorbed dose calculated from percentage depth dose and absorbed dose at the reference point. The isodose curves were also obtained using an Isodose plotter, for reference. The measurements were carried out for 31cGy (exposure time: 120seconds) and 80cGy (exposure time: 300seconds) at the reference point. While the isodose curves obtained with our system were drawn up to 60% dose range for the case of 80cGy, the isodose curves could be drawn up to 80% dose range for the case of 31cGy. Furthermore, the isodose curves almost agreed with that obtained with the isodose plotter in low dose range. However, further improvement of our system is necessary in high dose range.

  • Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma is a rare benign mixed odontogenic tumor with histologic characteristics of ameloblastic fibroma and complex odontoma. As with ameloblastic fibroma, it may be asymptomatic or found because of painless swelling and delayed eruption of associated tooth. This report presents a case of ameloblastic fibro-odontoma in the posterior mandible of a 14-year-old girl and analyses its clinical features and radiographic features on plain X-ray film and CT images. • We developed a digital x-ray medical imaging system using commercially available amorphous silicon image sensor plate. The image readout could be accomplished within 3.5 sec after radiation exposure and be displayed on a monitor through computer interface. This system needs not the conventional x-ray films and film processors, and also provides digital radiographic images. This system is the fastest digital radiography system developed so far, and expected to replace many of the conventional x-ray film systems or digital radiography systems.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the availabilities of radiographic technics as diagnostic method related to mandibular canal in dental clinic. For this study 12 dry mandibles were used and 12 orthopantomograms were taken for measuring the gonial angle and the angle of mandibular canal to inferior border of mandible. 12 sites located between the 1st premolar to the 3rd molar region of 3dry mandibles were selected randomly, for measuring the vertical image magnification rates on three films; intraoral film, orthopantomogram, and computed tomogram, respectively and the thickness of cortical bone, and for observing bucco-lingually and supero-inferiorly location of the mandibular canal. The acquired results were as follows: 1. The means of the gonial angle and the angle of mandibular canal to inferior border of mandible were 123.9° and 143.5° And the two angles of dry mandible in alveolar crest stage were greater than in alveolar socket stage. 2. The vertical image length on intraoral film by paralleling technic was magnified by 3.07% on the average, the length on orthopantomogram by 18.49%, and the length on computed tomogram by 0.27%. 3. Observation of the bucco-lingually positional relationship of the mandibular canal was impossible by occlusal projection with the cross section technic and intraoral standard projection with the Clack's rule, however, possible by computed tomogram. 4. The thickness of the cortical bone of mandible was thickest in inferior border, and thicker by 6.59% at buccal side than at lingual side.

  • To inquire its usefulness of the clinical application of intelligent replenishment system of automatic X-ray film processor based on film density, we processed the serial 300 sheets of radiographic film of chest [$14{\times}14"$, HR-C type] and bone [elbow & ankle($8{\times}10"$), skull($10{\times}12"$), hand & foot($11{\times}14"$), pelvis($14{\times}17"$), HR-G type, 68, 70, 77, 85 sheets respectively]. We analyzed the characteristic corves, relative speeds, average gradients and base plus fog densities every twenty five sheets. We also evaluated the developer and fixer replenishment volumes every that time. In the chest and bone radiograph two all, the characteristic curves were little change, and the relative speeds, average gradients and base plus fog densities were within the maximum control limits. The average developer replenishment volumes were about 43m1/sheet and 39m1/sheet respectively. It brings decreased results about 29% in comparison with the conventional replenishment system. In our experiences, we conclude that the intelligent replenishment system of automatic X-ray film processor based on film density maintains image quality consistently, decreases also the replenishment volumes. Therefore, this system will be resulted in economic and environmental effects, and solve problems of over and low replenishment volume.

  • This study was designed to measure the absorbed dose to organs of special interest from full mouth with intraoral film(l4 films) and to compare the five periapical techniques. Thermoluminescent crystals(TLD-100 chip) were located in brain, orbit, bone marrow of mandibular ramus, bone marrow of mandibular body, bone marrow of 4th cervical spine, parotid gland, submandibular gland and thyroid gland. X -ray machine was operated at 70kVp and round collimating film holding device(XCP) and rectangular collimating film holding device(Precision Instrument) were used. The distance from the X-ray focus to the open end of the collimator was 8 inch, 12 inch and 16 inch. The results were as follows : 1. The absorbed dose was the highest in bone marrow of mandibular body(5.656mGy) and the lowest in brain (0.050mGy). 2. Generally, the lowest absorbed dose was measured from 16 inch cylinder, rectangular collimating film holding device with paralleling technique. But, in bone marrow of mandibular body and the floor of mouth, the highest absorbed dose was measured from 12 inch cylinder, rectangular collimating film holding device with paralleling techniques. 3. Comparing of five intraoral radiographic techniques, it was appeared statistically significant reduction of the absorbed doses measured with rectangular collimating film holding device compared to XCP film holding device (P<0.05). 4. No statistically significant reduction in the absorbed dose was found as cylinder length was changed(P>0.05).
