  • Magnetic resonance imaging has a potential to produce clear anatomical as well as functional images of human body. However, the ability to diagnose is limited by signal to noise ratio (SNR) and the resolution of current medical systems. To remove the challenges prevalent due to the use of high field scanners, dedicated radio frequency coils are used. Transverse electromagnetic coils have an advantage of providing homogeneous magnetic field throughout the region but with low signal to noise ratio while surface coils have an advantage of providing higher signal to noise ratio but with low homogeneity. This research combines both the advantage into one by utilizing transmit only transverse electromagnetic radio frequency coils (8 channel) along with receive only surface coils (by varying the number) for better imaging of brain. A 7 Tesla 32-channel close fitting helmet shaped phased-array surface coils along with the combination of 8 channel transmit only transverse electromagnetic coils provided good homogeneity as well as significant SNR improvements throughout the human brain.

  • In this paper, for phase lock loop(PLL) synthesizer, we introduce a novel but simple and low cost frequency modulation(FM) circuit of a flat peak frequency deviation for modulation signal from high to very low frequency penetrating into the loop-bandwidth of PLL. The FM circuit was basically designed to compensate an amount of feedback of the loop filter in PLL. The circuit also includes the capability of the adjustment of peak frequency deviation and blocking the interference with the loop filter. The designed circuit was successfully implemented and showed the flat frequency deviation as expected in the design.

  • This paper introduces an active sensing node using radio-frequency (RF) telemetry. This device has brought the traditional impedance-based structural health monitoring (SHM) technique to a new paradigm. The RF active sensing node consists of a miniaturized impedance measuring device (AD5933), a microcontroller (ATmega128L), and a radio frequency (RF) transmitter (XBee). A macro-fiber composite (MFC) patch interrogates a host structure by using a self-sensing technique of the miniaturized impedance measuring device. All the process including structural interrogation, data acquisition, signal processing, and damage diagnostic is being performed at the sensor location by the microcontroller. The RF transmitter is used to communicate the current status of the host structure. The feasibility of the proposed SHM strategy is verified through an experimental study inspecting loose bolts in a bolt-jointed aluminum structure.

  • The monitoring to crack damages is studied using the radio frequency system and static displacement sensors. If load is received on the center of the flexible specimen, bonded sensors will be destroyed, and these are become to send signals of damages at the radio frequency system connected with sensors. This study is fundamental research of the monitoring damage system for diagnostic concrete elements using the radio frequency system and static displacement sensors.

  • Recently, spectrum requirements are rapidly increasing in accordance with wireless communication development. For this reason, FCC(Federal communications commission) is considering cognitive radio system to increase spectral efficiency. In this paper, we present the performance analysis of signal detection by using RS(Reference signal) for LTE environments. Especially, we analyze the performance of detection probability in case of downlink LTE system. In the simulation, we generate OFDMA signal format which is specified in the LTE system. We assume additive white Gausssian noise channel environment. We estimate the performance by setting the threshold value of 5 % and 10 % based on CFAR(Constant false alarm rate) and false alarm rate, respectively. Finally, we discuss a future study plan on the applicability of CR to the LTE system.

  • In this study, we suggest an emulator for generating multiple heterogeneous interference signals in the Korean radio frequency identification/ubiquitous sensor network (RFID/USN) frequency band. The proposed emulator uses only one universal software radio peripheral to generate multiple heterogeneous interference signals more economically. Moreover, the physical and media access control parameters can be adjusted in real time using the LabVIEW program, thereby making it possible to create various time-varying interference environments easily. As an example showing the capability of the proposed emulator, multiple interference signals consisting of a frequency-hopping RFID signal and two LoRa signals with different spreading factors were generated. The generated signals were confirmed in both frequency and time domains. From the experimental results, we verified that our emulator could successfully generate multiple heterogeneous interference signals with different frequency and time domain characteristics.

  • Partial high frequency bands were allocated to the operation of ocean surface radars that monitor the sea surface currents and waves in WRC-12. On that basis, government-related organizations revised the table of domestic frequency allocation. In order to study radio environments in the allocated bands for ocean radar, tests of the radio signal spectrum were carried at 7-sites using the receiver of the ocean surface radar system operated with a shutdown of the transmitter for 10-60 min. The results showed that no serious radio noises occur at 25 and 43 MHz bands, indicating a good radio environment for the ocean surface radar operation. However, at 13 MHz band, it was difficult to generate stable and confidential data from the ocean surface radar because serious radio noises occurred continuously.

  • In this paper, we propose a detection method for Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Plus suitable for hybrid mode broadcasting which services both DRM Plus and analog FM within the same frequency band. The guard-interval correlation method of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is good for DRM Plus signal detection, but the possibility for false alarm increases when FM signal is received. The proposed method includes a reference block in the guard-interval correlation which increases the identification rate of weak DRM Plus signals and decreases the possibility of false alarm when analog FM is received. The performance of the proposed method is verified through simulations.

  • This paper presents the analysis of fiber radio system transmitting OFDM signal. We propose a baseband equivalent system model and prove the relation between the IMD(intermodulation distortion) power and the number of subcarrier in the OFDM signal. Using this relation, we derive the CNH of the overall system. In terms of the required CNR for each digital modulation scheme, we extract the maximum number of the subcarrier in the OFDM signal using simulation and examine how the system parameters are related with the CNR.

  • In this paper, authors have been evaluated the Frame Error Rate (FER) performance of IEEE 802.11 a/g/p standard 5 GHz frequency band WLAN over Rayleigh and Rician distributed fading channels in presence of Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN). Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based transceiver is implemented by using real-time signal processing frameworks (IEEE 802.11 Blocks) in GNU Radio Companion (GRC) and Ettus USRP N200 is used to process the symbol over the wireless radio channel. The FER is calculated for each sub-carrier conventional modulation schemes used by OFDM such as BPSK, QPSK, 16, 64-QAM with different punctuated coding rates. More precise SNR is computed by modifying the SNR calculation process of YANS and NIST error rate model to estimate more accurate FER. Here, real-time signal constellations, OFDM signal spectrums etc. are also observed to find the effect of multipath propagation of signals through flat and frequency selective fading channels. To reduce the error rate due to the multipath fading effect and Doppler shifting, channel estimation (CE) and equalization techniques such as Least Square (LS) and training based adaptive Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm are applied in the receiver. The simulation work is practically verified at GRC by turning into a pair of Software Define Radio (SDR) as a simultaneous transceiver.
