A decimation chain for multi-standard reconfigurable radios is presented for 900-MHz and 1,900-MHz dual-band cellular standards with a data interpolator based on the Lagrange method for adjusting the variable data rate to a fixed data rate appropriate for each standard. The two proposed configurations are analyzed and compared to provide insight into aliasing and the signal bandwidth by means of a newly introduced measure called interpolation error. The average interpolation error is reduced as the ratio of the sampling frequency to the signal BW is increased. The decimation chain and the multi-rate analog-to-digital converter are simulated to compute the interpolation error and the output signal-to-noise ratio. Further, a method to operate the above-mentioned chain under a compressed mode of operation is proposed in order to guarantee continuous packet connectivity for inter-radio-access technologies. The presented decimation chain can be applied to LTE, WCDMA, GSM multi-mode multi-band digital front-end which will ultimately lead to the software-defined radio.
Traditional designs of cognitive radio (CR) focus on maximizing system throughput. In this paper, we study the joint overlay and underlay power allocation problem for orthogonal frequency-division multiple access-based CR. Instead of maximizing system throughput, we aim to maximize system energy efficiency (EE), measured by a "bit per Joule" metric, while maintaining the minimal rate requirement of a given CR system, under the total power constraint of a secondary user and interference constraints of primary users. The formulated energy-efficient power allocation (EEPA) problem is nonconvex; to make it solvable, we first transform the original problem into a convex optimization problem via fractional programming, and then the Lagrange dual decomposition method is used to solve the equivalent convex optimization problem. Finally, an optimal EEPA allocation scheme is proposed. Numerical results show that the proposed method can achieve better EE performance.

Harmonic effects in a wideband stepped frequency radar(650 MHz~4.5 GHz) have been analyzed. As a result of numerical analysis and simulation, when the second harmonic exists in each frequency, a time-domain result represents an additional object which does not exist but looks to be located at a distance of twice the original object distance. The second harmonics can be removed effectively by low pass filters because there are no other signals between DC and a fundamental signal. In this paper, the harmonic problem can be solved by removing the second harmonics of 650 MHz to 4.5 GHz wideband fundamental signal with two switches and four low pass filters.

In a cognitive radio based system, quality of service (QoS) for the secondary user must be maintained as much as possible even while that of the primary user is protected all he time. In particular, switching wireless links for the secondary user during the transmission of multimedia data causes delay and information loss, and QoS degradations occur inevitably. The efficient resource management scheme is necessary to support the seamless multimedia service to the secondary user. This paper proposes a novel frequency selection method based on Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM), in which uncertain parameters such as received signal strength, cell load, data rate, and available bandwidth are considered during the decision process for the frequency selection with the fuzzy set theory. Through simulation, we show that our proposed frequency selection method provides a better performance than the conventional methods which consider the received signal strength only.

This paper proposes, based on a bandpass sampling theory, a novel method to find valid sampling frequency range and minimum sampling rate with low computational complexity for downconversion of N bandpass radio frequency(RF) signals, under application of all possible signal placements(full permutations) in a IF stage. Additionally, we have developed a complexity-reducing method to obtaine the opttimal and minimal sampling rate for supporting the user-wanted guard-band or spacing between adjacent downconverted signal spectrums. Moreover, we have verified through comparisons with other methods that the proposed methods have more advantageous properties.

Since the existing anti-jamming methods, including intelligent methods, have difficulty against high-speed reactive jamming, we studied a new methodology for jamming utilization instead of avoiding jamming. Different from the existing jamming utilization techniques that harvest energy from the jamming signal as a power supply, our proposed method can take the jamming signal as a favorable factor for frequency detection. Specifically, we design an intelligent differential frequency hopping communication framework (IDFH), which contains two stages of training and communication. We first adopt supervised learning to get the jamming rule during the training stage when the synchronizing sequence is sent. And then, we utilize the jamming rule to improve the frequency detection during the communication stage when the real payload is sent. Simulation results show that the proposed method successfully combated high-speed reactive jamming with different parameters. And the communication performance increases as the power of the jamming signal increase, hence the jamming signal can help users communicate in a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environment.

We designed the Intermediate Frequency(IF) distributor for multi beam backend system and manufactured Voltage to Frequency Converter(VFC) to measure the multi-beam receiver performance. Multi beam receiver has 15 channel receivers and can get 15 spectrums at once. The multi beam receiver has more observation efficiency than single beam receiver. We manufactured the 15 IF distributors to distribute IF signal for Autocorrelation spectrometer that is radio signal processor. Also, we manufactured the VF Converter to test the performance measurement of receiver for Korea VLBI Network(KVN) system which is under-construct in Seoul, Ulsan and Jeju. As a result of performance measurement, we could obtain linearity of 99.4% on the input power vs output frequency and measured the operating range of input frequency.

This study analyzed the properties of VHF band and suggested an efficient VHF band application plan for digital radio and UHDTV broadcasting through the experiment by the house T-DMB device in practical user environment. In order to find an efficient frequency band for digital radio broadcasting, this study examined first, to check the times of drop-out receive occurring in the audible area using a DMB/FM CAR Radio for T-DMB that has the characteristics of DAB. Second, this article explored the phenomenon of feedback loops in the same channel using a T-DMB house gap filler transmitting the signal by the same OFDM modulation scheme with UHDTV for configuring suitable SFN transmission network of the UHDTV broadcasting. Based on these experiments, this study suggested a suitable VHF band for digital radio and an efficient utilization of the VHF frequency band for the SFN network configuration of UHDTV.

SIGINT(SIGnal INTelligence) includes several parameters intercepted by measurement and analysis of the RF(Radio frequency) signal from free space. One of the important parameters is frequency information. Expecially, in order to perform instantaneous frequency measurement of Radar and Missile seeker's RF signals, we use dedicated RF modules as a DFD(Digital Frequency Discriminator) to provide frequency information by measurement of the relative phase difference between signals via intended RF delay lines. It must measure and provide realtime based frequency information on short pulsed RF signal up to 100 nSec or less. This document proposes Ultra wideband DFD consisted of a RF input section of Wideband 4 channel RF delay line and correlator, a digital processing section to measure and provide frequency information from I/Q signal, and a frequency calibration section. Also, it will show design suitability based on test results measured under test condition of very short input pulse signals.

In this paper, we evaluate the basic test results of the 32 Gbps observational equipment introduced as the back-end system for the wideband VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) observation of KVN (Korean VLBI Network). Radio astronomers want to make a large radio telescope that has excellent performance in order to observe the superfine structure of a celestial body, but a lot of money is needed. Therefore, in order to increase the sensitivity, the performance improvement of the receiving system and the method of observing the wide frequency bandwidth are introduced. To do this, we adopted a wideband sampling method for converting analog signals to digital with ultra-fast speeds and a wideband sampler for performing digital filtering in order to observe a wide observational frequency bandwidth. The wideband sampler (OCTAD-K) supports up to 16 Gsps-2bits sampling and supports a variety of observational bandwidth using digital filtering techniques. In particular, it is designed to support KVN's 4-frequency simultaneous observation system and VERA(VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry)'s 2-beam observation system. It can also support polKVN(Korean VLBI Network), KaVA(KVN and VERA Array), 32Gbps Direct Sampler, Digital Filter, Widebandarization observations and supports the standard VDIF(VLBI Data Interchange Format) format of observed data. In this paper, the performance of the system and the problem solving are described in detail after performing the factory inspection and field test before the system is introduced.
