This study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of various fabrics in protecting from solar radiation and ultraviolet radiation(UV). Six kinds of fabrics were selected and examined in singles or doubles. It was studied how the materials and the thickness of air layer between the fabric and the floor affected the protection efficiency of fabrics from sunlight. The results were as followes; 1) Protection from solar radiation: In the case of over 2 cm air layer, doubled fabric composed of aluminum coating-nylon and white or black polyester/cotton(T/C) was the most protective(p<0.001). In the case of 0 cm air layer, the case without fabric and white T/C were more effective(p<0.001). And the thicker the air layer the more effective the protection. 2) Protection from UV : Doubled fabric composed of aluminum coating-nylon and black T/C was the most protective(p<0.001) and the thinner the air layer the more effective the protection(p<0.001).
Background: As an important detecting device, TLD is a widely used in the radiation monitoring. It is essential for us to study the property of detecting element. The aim of this study is to calculate the thermo-luminescence efficiency of TL elements. Materials and Methods: A batch of thermo-luminescence elements were irradiated by the filtered X-ray beams of average energies in the range 40-200 kVp, 662 keV $^{137}Cs$ gamma rays and then the amounts of lights were measured by the TL reader. The deposition energies in elements were calculated by theory formula and Monte Carlo simulation. The unit absorbed dose in elements by photons with different energies corresponding to the amounts of lights was calculated, which is called the thermo luminescent efficiency (${\eta}^{(E)}$). Because of the amounts of lights can be calculated by the absorbed dose in elements multiply ${\eta}^{(E)}$, the ${\eta}^{(E)}$ can be calculated by the experimental data (the amounts of lights) divided by absorbed dose. Results and Discussion: The deviation of simulation results compared with theoretical calculation results were less than 5%, so the absorbed dose in elements was calculated by simulation results in here. The change range of ${\eta}^{(E)}$ value, relative to 662 keV $^{137}Cs$ gamma rays, is about 30% in the energy range of 33 keV to 662 keV, is in accordance by the comparison with relevant foreign literatures. Conclusion: The ${\eta}^{(E)}$ values can be used for updating the amounts of lights that are got by the direct ratio assumed relations with deposition energy in TL elements, which can largely reduce the error of calculation results of the amounts of lights. These data can be used for the design of individual dosimeter which used TLD-2000 thermo-luminescence elements, also have a certain reference value for manufacturer to improve the energy-response performance of TL elements by formulation adjustment.
The high efficiency moderated-type neutron spectrometer and doseequivalent counter were developed for the measurement of low level environmental neutrons. By using these detectors, the neutron energy spectra and dose equivalent rates due to skyshine effect were measured in the environment surrounding the accelerator facilities and also the altitude variation of cosmic ray neutrons in the aircraft flying over Japan.
The lead element or its salts are good radiation shielding materials. However, their toxic effects are high. Due to less toxicity of bismuth salts, the radiation shielding properties of the bismuth salts have been investigated and compared to that of lead salts to establish them as a better alternative to radiation shielding material to the lead element or its salts. The transmission geometry was utilized to measure the mass attenuation coefficient (${\mu}/{\rho}$) of different salts containing lead and bismuth using a high-resolution HPGe detector and different energies (between 81 and 1333 keV) emitted from point sources of $^{133}Ba$, $^{57}Co$, $^{22}Na$, $^{54}Mn$, $^{137}Cs$, and $^{60}Co$. The experimental ${\mu}/{\rho}$ results are compared with the theoretical values obtained through WinXCOM program. The theoretical calculations are in good agreement with their experimental ones. The radiation protection efficiencies, mean free paths, effective atomic numbers and electron densities for the present compounds were determined. The bismuth fluoride ($BiF_3$) is found to have maximum radiation protection efficiency among the selected salts. The results showed that present salts are more effective for reducing the intensity of gamma photons at low energy region.

This study introduces a lead-free alternative for enhanced radiation protection. While lead aprons effectively attenuate ionizing radiation, concerns regarding flexibility, weight, and environmental hazards persist. In response, the present research is focused on producing an innovative sheet shielding comprised of carefully selected dense metal oxide microparticles (DMOs-MPs) and liquid silicone rubber (LSR). To evaluate the efficacy of the LSR samples, the current study uses rigorous testing procedures, such as microstructure characterization using EDX and FESEM. Furthermore, the study investigated key attenuation parameters within the LSR samples. Radiation protection was greatly and effectively supplied using DMOs-MPs filler (Bi-1 to Bi-7) in LSR samples; this protection reached 99.9% in the X-ray energy range. Due to the unique characteristics of the Bi-7, the results demonstrated that the samples' shielding efficiency improved with the addition of high atomic number and high-density fillers. It had the greatest attenuation coefficient and density. At 60 keV, Bi-7's density was 2.980 gcm-3, and its LAC and MAC were 19.2621 cm-1 and 6.4638 cm2/g, respectively. It also had the lowest half-value layer values in the energy range of 60-120 keV. The LSR samples showed effective radiation absorption for different energy levels, indicating that LSR can enhance the flexibility and comfort of the apron while providing adequate radiation protection. The incorporation of the DMOs-MPs with LSR represents an effective contribution and a noteworthy stride to enhance the safety and well-being of medical professionals routinely exposed to ionizing radiation.

This study was to develop the sunshade hat which reduced stress from solar radiation and ultraviolet radiation (UV), in order to keep the farmer's health and to promote their work efficiency. The new sunshade hat with a large brim, special structure for ventilation, stability and portability was designed and tested with manikin heads outdoors. Two newly designed sunshade hats(A, B) and three existing hat were tested Sunshade hat A made of double fabric with aluminum coating-nylon and black cotton cloth with a polyester mix(T/C) was the most protective from solar radiation. Sunshade hat B with larger brim was the most protective from ultraviolet radiation, even though it was made of aluminum coating-nylon single fabric.
To reduce farmer's stress from solar radiation and ultraviolet radiation(UV), the sunshade hat with a large brim and special structure for ventilation was developed and tested with manikin heads outdoors at previous study(Kim and Choi, 2002). To evaluate the protection efficiency of the sunshade hat, human trial test was performed at outdoors. The results were as follows; Skin temperatures(7 sites), heart rate, temperature inside the hats, temperature and relative humidity inside clothing on the back in wearing developed sunshade hat were significantly lower than those in wearing the controlled hat. In subjective sensation, subjects answered to feel significantly hotter, more humid and more uncomfortable in wearing the controlled hat. But relative humidity inside the hats was significantly higher in wearing developed hat. In rectal temperature, there were no significant differences between two hats.
Background: Gamma-ray detectors having a thin window of a material with low atomic number can increase the true coincidence summing effects for radionuclides emitting X-rays or gamma-rays. This effect can make efficiency calibration or spectrum analysis more complicated. In this study, a Cu shield was tested as an X-ray filter to neglect the true coincidence summing effect by X-rays and gamma-rays in gamma-ray spectrometry, in order to simplify gamma-ray energy spectrum analysis. Materials and Methods: A Cu shield was designed and applied to an n-type high-purity germanium detector having an $X-{\gamma}$ summing effect during efficiency calibration. This was tested using a commercial, certified mixed gamma-ray source. The feasibility of a Cu shield was evaluated by comparing efficiency calibration results with and without the shield. Results and Discussion: In this study, the thickness of a Cu shield needed to avoid true coincidence summing effects due to $X-{\gamma}$ was tested and determined to be 1 mm, considering the detection efficiency desired for higher energy. As a result, the accuracy of the detection efficiency calibration was improved by more than 13% by reducing $X-{\gamma}$ summing. Conclusion: The $X-{\gamma}$ summing effect should be considered, along with ${\gamma}-{\gamma}$ summing, when a detection efficiency calibration is implemented and appropriate shielding material can be useful for simplifying analysis of the gamma-ray energy spectra.

Background: Different cases exist in the measurement of thyroid radiobioassays owing to the individual characteristics of the subjects, especially the potential variation in the counting efficiency. An In situ Object Counting System (ISOCS) was developed to perform an efficiency calibration based on the Monte Carlo calculation, as an alternative to conventional calibration methods. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the applicability of ISOCS to thyroid radiobioassays by comparison with a conventional thyroid monitoring system. Materials and Methods: The efficiency calibration of a portable high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector was performed using ISOCS software. In contrast, the conventional efficiency calibration, which needed a radioactive material, was applied to a scintillator-based thyroid monitor. Four radioiodine samples that contained $^{125}I$ and $^{131}I$ in both aqueous solution and gel forms were measured to evaluate radioactivity in the thyroid. ANSI/HPS N13.30 performance criteria, which included the relative bias, relative precision, and root-mean-squared error, were applied to evaluate the performance of the measurement system. Results and Discussion: The portable HPGe detector could measure both radioiodines with ISOCS but the thyroid monitor could not measure $^{125}I$ because of the limited energy resolution of the NaI(Tl) scintillator. The $^{131}I$ results from both detectors agreed to within 5% with the certified results. Moreover, the $^{125}I$ results from the portable HPGe detector agreed to within 10% with the certified results. All measurement results complied with the ANSI/HPS N13.30 performance criteria. Conclusion: The results of the intercomparison program indicated the feasibility of applying ISOCS software to direct thyroid radiobioassays. The portable HPGe detector with ISOCS software can provide the convenience of efficiency calibration and higher energy resolution for identifying photopeaks, compared with a conventional thyroid monitor with a NaI(Tl) scintillator. The application of ISOCS software in a radiation emergency can improve the response in terms of internal contamination monitoring.
