  • The purpose of this study is to predict and understand the hydrodynamic forces and their nonlinear behaviors of fluid motion around the submerged plate oscillating near a free surface. To achieve this objective, we have developed a composite grid method for the solution of a radiation problem. The domain is divided into two different grids; one is a moving grid system and the other is a fixed grid system. The moving grid is employed for the body fitted coordinate system and moves with the body. This numerical method is applied to calculation of radiation forces generated by the submerged plate oscillating near a free surface. In order to investigate the characteristics of the radiation forces, the forced heaving tests have been performed with several amplitudes and different submergences near a free surface. These experimental results are compared with the numerical ones obtained by the present method and a linear potential theory. As a result, we can confirm the accuracy of the present method. Finally, the effect of nonlinear and viscous damping has been evaluated on the hydrodynamic forces acting on the submerged plate.

  • The hydrodynamic forces acting on the submerged plate are composed of diffraction and radiation forces. Thus we have carried out the extensive experiments and numerical simulations to make clear the characteristics of the diffraction and radiation forces on the submerged plate. These experimental results are compared with the numerical ones, and we discuss the effect of nonlinear on the hydrodynamic forces acting on the submerged plate. As a result, we get the conclusion that the submerged plate is useful for reducing the wave exciting forces on the structure behind the submerged plate.

  • This paper presents a simplified analytical formulation for computing acoustic power radiation from a rectangular plate exposed to random forces such as turbulent boundary layer pressure fluctuations and arbitrary mechanical force in a subsonic flow field. The expression for the acoustic power is derived using modal expansion method and light fluid loading is assumed on the plate. In order to simplify the formulation for acoustic power due to combined excitations of mechanical forces and turbulent pressures, it is assumed that the structural damping of the plate is small and excitations are broadband random forces having frequency spectra above the convective coincidence. Under these assumptions, an approximate solution for the broadband acoustic power radiation from a plate excited by both turbulent pressures and arbitrary mechanical forces is obtained and evaluated considering the effect of modal coupling on the radiated acoustic power. An efficient method is also suggested to compute modal acoustic impedance in a moving fluid medium by using averaged Green function.

  • A theoretical model has been studied to describe the sound radiation analysis for structure vibration noise of vehicle tires under the action of random moving line forces. When a tire is analyzed, it had been modeled as curved beams with distributed springs and dash pots that represent the radial, tangential stiffness and damping of tire, respectively. The reaction due to fluid loading on the vibratory response of the curved beam is taken into account. The curved beam is assumed to occupy the plane y=0 and to be axially infinite. The expression for sound power is integrated numerically and the results examined as a function of Mach number, wave-number ratio and stiffness factor. The experimental investigation for structure vibration noise of vehicle tire under the action of random moving line forces has been made. Based on the Spatial Transformation of Sound Field techniques, the sound power and sound radiation are measured. Results strongly suggest that operation condition in the tire material properties and design factors of the tire govern the sound power and sound radiation characteristics.

  • The diffraction and radiation of linear waves by an array of truncated floating multiple buoys are solved using the interaction theory based on a matched eigenfunction expansion method (MEEM). The interaction processes between multiple buoys are very complex and numerous, because the scattered and radiated waves from each buoy affect the others in the array. Our primary aim is therefore to construct the rigorous wave exciting forces and hydrodynamic forces to deal with the problem of multiple interactions. This present method is applied to a square array of four buoys with two incidence angles, and the results are given for the wave excitation forces on each buoy, heave RAO for each buoy heaving independently, and wave elevations around the buoys and wave run-up. The analytical solutions are in good agreement with the numerical solutions obtained from commercial code (WAMIT).

  • The main objective of this study is to estimate the hydrodynamic forces and to investigate the nonlinear behaviors of fluid motion around the oscillating body on or below a free surface. We have developed a composite grid method to solve the radiation problems. This method is applied to numerical computation of the radiation forces generated by the oscillating body. The numerical results obtained by the present method are compared with the experimental data and a linear potential theory. As a result, we can confirm the accuracy of the present method. Finally, we have evaluated the effect of viscosity on the hydrodynamic forces acting on the oscillating body.

  • The primary objective of this study is to present a modified method of hydroelastic analysis and application of it to the VLFS with submerged plate. The modal analysis method is applied to the VLFS with the submerged plate using the modified hydrodynamic coefficients. Namely, the wave exciting forces are modified by the transmission wave coefficients, while the interaction factor is used for the modification of radiation forces. To validate the proposed method, comparisons between the numerical calculations and experimental data have been carried out for the deflections of VLFS, and it shows good agreement between the calculation and experiment. The results presented in this study demonstrate that the elastic response of the VLFS is strongly affected by the hydrodynamic interaction induced by the submerged plate. As a result, we can confirm that the submerged plate is useful for reducing the hydroelastic deflection of VLFS, and the proposed method is valuable for predicting the elastic response of VLFS with attached the submerged plate.
