  • A prototype electronic dosimeter(PED) adopting a silicon PIN diode detector as a radiation detector has been developed, manufactured and test-evaluated. A radiation signal processing circuit has been electronically tested and then the radiation detection characteristics of this PED has been performance-tested by using a reference photon radiation field. As a result in a electronic performance test, radiation signals from a detector were well observed in the signal processing circuit. The radiation detection sensitivity of this PED after several test-irradiations to $^{137}Cs$ gamma radiation source appeared to be 1.85 cps/$Gy{\cdot}h^{-1}$ with 19.3% of the coefficient of variation, which satisfied the performance criteria for the active personnel radiation monitor. Further improvement of the electronic circuit and operating program will enable the PED to be used in personal monitoring purpose.

  • It is important to test and evaluate the variation degree of ship-mounted antenna radiated power with respect to all directions in order to use more effectively antennas that installed on naval ships. The naval ship has various sensors for navigation, communication and electronic warfare, etc. And the performance of these sensors extremely depends on the various characteristics of antenna system to transmit and receive electromagnetic wave. The radiated power pattern of the antenna differs from all aspect angles of the ship because of complex superstructures. It is important to know the weak point(direction) of antenna radiation for appropriate operation. Therefore, the ARP(Antenna Radiation Pattern) of shipboard antennas is measured for the all aspect angles. The results of ARP measurement are utilized as reference for antenna arrangement of newly-built same class warship. This study also describes the development results for the ARP measurement technique, software design and test procedures to measure the radiation pattern of communication equipment antennas using the fixed test site.

  • In this study we designed the radiation-hardened sensor signal processing modules that can be commonly used for a variety of sensors during normal operation and even in high-radiation environments caused by an accident. First development module was designed to receive the change of the R and C value from the sensors and to process the signal as a PWM modulation scheme. This module was assessed to have ± 10% error to the Full-Scale in the radiation test in the range of 12 kGy TID. The main cause of the error was analyzed as the annealing of the common circuit in the switching element and the consequent increase in the duty ratio of the pulse width modulation circuit according to the radiation dose increasement. The redesigned module for higher radiation resistivity with Stub transistor circuit was found to have less than 5% error to the Full-scale from the radiation test results for 20.7 kGy TID range.

  • A radiation-resistant bacterium was isolated from gamma irradiated dried laver (Porphyra tenera) and its microbiological characteristics were examined. As a result of resistance test to gamma irradiation, the isolate was survived $10^{3}$ CFU/mL even at 30 kGy and significant shoulder line zone was shown until 20 kGy. The $D_{10}$ value was 11.27 kGy. The isolate was gram-positive, non-motile coccus and catalase-positive. n culture, the red-pigmented smooth colony was observed. The biochemical test in API (analytical profile index) system showed that the isolate fermented glucose and fructose as the carbon source. Therefore, a radiation-resistant bacterium isolated from laver was potentially identified as Micrococcus roseus sp.

  • It is the conventional wisdom that the Poynting-Robertson effect is essentially the outcome of the interplay between absorption and reemission processes. For a better understanding of the motion of charged particles around a compact star with strong radiation, we reached an alternative interpretation for the Poynting-Robertson effect based on the covariant formalism and found that it is attributed to the combination of the aberration and the Lorentz transformation of the radiation stress-energy tensor. As a general relativistic application of the Poynting-Robertson effect, we studied the dynamics of test particles around the spinning relativistic star with strong radiation. We discovered that the combination of the angular momentum and the finite size of the star generates "radiation counter drag" which exerts on the test particle to enhance its specific angular momentum, contrary to the radiation drag. The balance of the radiation drag and the radiation counter drag renders the particle to hover around the spinning luminous star at the "suspension orbit". The radial position and the angular velocity of the particle on the "suspension orbit" are determined by the angular momentum, the luminosity, and the size of the central star only, and they are independent of the initial position and velocity of the particle.

  • Beta radiation is measured for an environmental monitoring purpose or for an internal radiation exposure monitoring of nuclear power plant's worker. In korea, strontium 89 and strontium 90 is measured for an environmental monitoring purpose. Also tritium and carbon 14 contained in urine is measured for an internal radiation exposure monitoring of nuclear power plant's worker. Because above isotopes emits low energy beta radiations having a wide range of energy, very complicated isotope separation preprocess is needed. In this study, two mixed beta emitting isotopes are measured simultaneously using a liquid scintillation counter(LSC) and analyzed by using a developed statistical method. Banded least square method is used to analyze the mixed spectrum, and the goodness-of-fitness test is proposed. Test results show that the developed procedure can be very useful for analyzing a mixed beta emitting isotopes.

  • As nuclear industry has been developed, a various types of radiological contamination has occurred. After 9.11 terror in U.S.A., it has been concerned that terrorists' active area has been enlarged to use nuclear or radioactive substance. Recently, the most powerful earth-quake stroke, which triggered a massive tsunami in Japan and then Fukushima nuclear power plant reactor has suffered from a serious accident in history. The Fukushima reactor accident has occurred an anxiety of radiation leaks and about 170,000 people have been evacuated from the accidental area near the nuclear power plant. For these reasons, a social chaos can be occurred if radiological contamination occurs to the supply system for the drinking water. As such, the establishment of the radiation monitoring system for the city main water system is compelling for the national security. In this study, a feasibility test of radiation monitoring system which consists of unified hybrid-type radiation detectors was experimented for multi detection system by using gamma-ray imaging. The hybrid-type radiation sensors were fabricated with CsI(Tl) scintillators and photodiodes. A preamplifier and amplifier was also fabricated and assembled with the sensor in the shielding case. For the preliminary test of detection of radiological contamination in the river, multi CsI(Tl)-PIN photodiode radiation detectors and $^{137}Cs$ gamma-ray source were used. The DAQ was done by Linux based ROOT program and NI DAQ system with Labview program. The simulated contamination was assumed to be occurred at Gapcheon river in Daejeon city. Multi CsI(Tl)-PIN photodiode radiation detectors were positioned at the Gapcheon river side. Assuming that the radiological contaminations flows in the river the $^{137}Cs$ gamma-ray source has been moved and then, the contamination region was reconstructed.

  • Skin contact allergy (SCA) is not life-threatening, but a large number of people have been suffered from the reactions caused by various kinds of chemicals and products. Thus, in this study, radiation technology was employed to improve the traditional herb addition method on the SCA reduction of Rhus verniciflua sap (RVS). Rhus verniciflua has traditionally been used as an herbal medicine plant, but its urushiol derivatives are known as a major allergen for the SCA. The present study was commenced to assess the allergenicity of both gamma-irradiated and non-irradiated RVS by using guinea-pig maximization test (GPMT) in order to probe the mechanism of an SCA. In the acute dermal irritation assays, non-irradiated RVS caused erythema, but the irradiated RVS did not provoke any erythema on the abdominal skin of the guinea pigs. From the result of the GPMT, urushiols, the main chemical components of RVS, were identified as an extreme skin sensitizer, and the removal of urushiols by irradiation extremely reduced the erythema. These results suggest that radiation technology is a novel method to reduce SCA through the removal of urushiols of RVS.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the knowledge and awareness about radiation use among non - radiation undergraduates. This analysis were used based on the collected questionnaires with Frequency, mean and standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA. As a result, there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of gender and age. There were statistical differences in some items in the major field. In addition, the perception of radiation was more negative in women and under 25 years of age (p<0.05). The correlations between the sub - factors showed that the higher the knowledge of radiation, the higher the perception of knowledge and use of radiation. It is believed that university students will have a positive effect of contributing to the development of the radiation industry if they have a correct understanding of radiation because they are more likely to contribute to public opinion by advancing into society.

  • We study the evolution of the energy spectrum of cosmic-ray electrons accelerated at spherically expanding shocks with low Mach numbers and the ensuing spectral signatures imprinted in radio synchrotron emission. Time-dependent simulations of diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) of electrons in the test-particle limit have been performed for spherical shocks with parameters relevant for typical shocks in the intracluster medium. The electron and radiation spectra at the shock location can be described properly by the test-particle DSA predictions with instantaneous shock parameters. However, the volume integrated spectra of both electrons and radiation deviate significantly from the test-particle power-laws, because the shock compression ratio and the flux of injected electrons at the shock gradually decrease as the shock slows down in time. So one needs to be cautious about interpreting observed radio spectra of evolving shocks based on simple DSA models in the test-particle regime.
