Swirl Number of Radial Swirler Design for Combustor in Aero Gas Turbine Engine (항공용 가스터빈엔진 연소기 내부 반경 방향 스월러의 스월수 계산)

  • Eco-friendly gas turbine combustors are getting attention due to emission regulations. Swirler is important design factor for flame stability and flashback inside the combustor. Design methods of the axial swirler and the radial swirler were discussed and the suitability of the swirl number calculation considering the geometric design variables and the flow loss was examined in the radial swirl for gas turbine combustor. The swirl number of flow was calculated by computational fluid dynamics and compared with swirl number according to each design method.

  • The flow and combustion characteristics in a premixed swirl combustor with a double cone burner are numerically analyzed to adopt a swirler model. The internal recirculation zone formed at the burner exit can be realized by a swirler with inner and outer diameters of 56 and 152 mm, respectively, and accordingly, the flow rate and radial velocity were determined. To select the tangential velocity, swirl and recirculation angles are introduced. A tangential velocity of 40 m/s produces an internal recirculation zone similar to that in a combustor. At the liner exit, the errors in temperature and velocity are 2.8% and 0%, respectively, and they are negligibly small. However, NOx emissions are underestimated by 67% in the numerical results obtained using the swirler model. Although considerable quantitative errors are induced by the swirler model, it can be useful numerical model for the EV burner because it can approximately simulate the essential flow and combustion characteristics in a premixed swirl combustor with a double cone burner and it is expected to make combustion analysis efficient in a gas turbine combustor with complex geometries.

  • Burner of Flat Flame type expects the uniform flame distribution and NOx reduction. The characteristics of Flat Flame Burner become different according to swirl number in the burner throat. Experiments were focused on swirl effect by four types of swirler with different swirl numbers (0, 0.26, 0.6 and 1.24). It shows many different flow patterns according to swirl number using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) method. The flow of burner with swirler is recirculated by pressure difference between its center and outside. Recirculated air makes stable in flame, and reduced pollutant gas. In case of swirl number 0, main flow passes through axial direction. As swirl number increased, The backward flow develops in the center part of burner and Flow gas recirculates. This is caused by radial flow momentum becomes larger than axial flow by swirled air and the pressure at center drops against surrounding. As swirl number increases, the radial and axial velocity was confirmed to be larger than low swirl numbers. And turbulence intensity have similar pattern. The CTRZ(Central Toroidal Recirculation Zone) is shown evidently when y/D=1 and S=1.24. The boundary-layer between main flow and recirculated flow is shown that the width is seen to be decreased as swirl number increased.

Effect of Swirl Angle on the Atomization Characteristics in Twin-Fluid Nozzle with Dual Air Supplying (이중공기공급 2-유체 노즐의 선회각 변화에 따른 미립화 특성)

  • The atomization characteristics of the dual air supplying two-fluid nozzle were investigated experimentally using PIV and PDA systems. The twin-fluid nozzle is composed of three main parts: the feeding injector to supply fluid that is controlled by a PWM (pulse-width modulation) mode, the adaptor as a device with the ports for supplying the carrier and assist air, and the main nozzle to produce sprays. The main nozzle has the swirler with four equally spaced tangential slots, which gives the injecting fluid an angular momentum. The swirl angle in the swirler varied with $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$. The ratios of carrier air to assist air and ALR (total air to liquid) were 0.55 and 1.23, respectively. The macroscopic behavior of the spray was investigated using PIV system, and the AMD and SMD distributions of the sprays were measured using PDA system. As a result, the SMD distribution increases along the radial distance, and it decreases with the increase of swirl angle in swirler.

  • The objective of this study is to find out the design data for gas burner with an axal and radial type nozzles. The design parameters are chosen as the stabilizer type, the jet hole size of gas nozzle, the distance between gas nozzle and stabilizer, the size of stabilizer and the hole size of stabilizer, the stabilizer type with or without air swirler, the angle of swirler. For the experimental test combustor sizing ${\phi}1.3m{\times}L4.5m$ is designed and manufactured, in which the set up of power diagram, the exhaust gas analysis, blow-off test, the flame temperature and the direct photography are performed.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of spray pattern such as discharge coefficient, spray angle, and mass distribution for two-fluid airblast swirl injector, within the range of fluid supply pressure 0~13kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. In general atomization is promoted with increasing total gas mass flow and performance of the splay pattern was more stable when radial mass flow was greater than axial mass flow, radial swirler was better than Axial swirler for atomization. Equivalent spray angle did not change with water mass flow except for the condition of 3kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and showed the same for the gas mass flow. Mass distribution from the patternator shows that maximum value of the distribution were lowered but distributed larger area when gas flow rate increased. Center of mass position did not change with increasing water mass flow.

  • A swirler with turbulence generator is designed and manufactured for generating many small-scale eddies in the combustor which contribute to enhancing mixing effect between fuel and air. The method results in not only the disadvantage of pressure loss but also the advantage of promoting combustion and reducing NOx. For the purpose of the study, four kinds of swirler with different turbulence generator area (0%, 3%, 7%, and 12% of reducing flow area) are designed to confirm the effect of mixing according the variation in the area of the turbulence generator. The mixing of combustor in the radial direction is significantly improved and the distributions of flames and temperature are well distributed throughout the cross section of a combustor as area of swirl generator is increased.

  • Effects of injector position and momentum flux ratio on a vertical jet in a cross flow field were studied qualitatively and shown by using air and water. The experiment was carried out by fixing the momentum flux ratio and varying the position of the injector hole. Conversely, the injector hole position was fixed and the momentum flux ratio was varied. Image visualization was performed by a Shadowgraph technique using a high speed camera. The visualized images were compared for finding differences in spraying through Density Gradient Magnitude Image. It is observed that as the x/d of the apparatus increased the jet break up height decreases and the spray angle also decreases. When x/d is 0, the spray reaches the floor and ceiling at any momentum flux ratio.
