Characteristic growth patterns of Cordyceps militaris isolates on various media, under varying light conditions and at varying incubation periods were examined. Light was found to be the most critical single factor in determining the density, texture, and pigmentation of the mycelial culture of the fungus. However, under the light condition, the degree of pigmentation and mycelial density were found to be affected by the incubation period and type of medium. Irrespective of the variations in medium type or incubation period, there was no pigmentation of the mycelium under dark condition. Radial growth of the mycelium was faster under dark incubation rather than under light incubation. Abundant mycelial density and darkest pigmentation of C. militaris isolates were produced in nutritionally rich media like SDAY, SMAY and CZYA, suggesting that these media may fulfill all the requirements for vegetative growth of the fungus. Growth characteristics of C. militaris isolates could be easily observed by the simple agar culture method, which would be useful to characterize the phenotypic characteristics of large number of pure cultures of the fungus under given conditions of growth factors such as medium, light and temperature.
The precise homeostatic regulation of local auxin accumulation in xylem precursors of cambium stem cell tissues is one of the most important mechanisms for plant vascular patterning and radial secondary growth. Walls are thin (WAT1), a novel intracellular auxin transporter, contributes directly to the auxin accumulation maxima in xylem precursors. According to recent research, the auxin signaling activated pathway-related gene network was significantly enriched during the secondary growth of Panax ginseng storage roots. These imply that during P. ginseng root secondary growth, specific signaling mechanisms for local auxin maxima in the vascular cambial cells are probably triggered. This study identified four WAT1-like genes, PgWAT1-1/-2 and PgWAT2-1/-2, in the P. ginseng genome. Their expression levels were greatly increased in nitratetreated storage roots stimulated for secondary root growth. PgWAT1-1 and PgWAT2-1 were similar to WAT1 from Arabidopsis and tomato plants in terms of their subcellular localization at a tonoplast and predicted transmembrane topology. We discovered that overexpression of PgWAT1-1 and PgWAT2-1 was sufficient to compensate for the secondary growth defects observed in slwat1-copi loss of function tomato mutants. This critical information from the PgWAT1-1 and PgWAT2-1 genes can potentially be used in future P. ginseng genetic engineering and breeding for increased crop yield.
Changing patterns and the possibility of climate change in the area of Cheiudo island, the southernmost Island in Korea, were analyzed using daily temperature and Precipitation data observed at the Cheiu Regional Meteorological Office from May 1923 to December 1998. A hydrologic simulation model "BROOK" was used to simulate and analyze the dynamics of daily soil moisture content and soil moisture deficit by applying the daily weather data. During the period, significantly increasing pattern was observed in temperature data of both annual and monthly basis, while no significantly changing pattern was observed in precipitation data. During the last 76 years. mean annual temperature was observed to have risen about 1.4$^{\circ}C$, which may show the Possibility of the initiation of climate change on the island whose validity should be tested in future studies after long-term studies on temperature. Based on the simulation, due to increased temperature, significant increase was predicted in evapotranspiration. while no significant decrease was detected in simulated soil moisture content during the period. Changing pattern of annual soil moisture content was markedly different from those of precipitation. In some dominant trees, negative effects of the drought of the late season for the previous year were shown to be statistically significant to radial growth of the tree for the current year. As annual variation of radial growth of trees is mainly affected by the soil moisture content. the information on the dynamics of soil moisture deficit possibly provides us with useful information for the interpretation of tree growth decline on the mountain. mountain.

Low-dislocation-density large-diameter GaAs single crystals with low-residual-strain have been strongly required. We have developed dislocation-free 3-inch Si doped GaAs crystals for photonic devices, and low-dislocation-density low-residual-strain 4-inch to 6-inch semi-insulating GaAs crystals for electronic devices by Vertical Bridgman(VB) technique. We confirmed that VB substrates with low-residual-strain have higher resistance against slip-line generation during MBE process. VB-GaAs single crystals show uniform radial profile of resistivity reflecting to the flat solid-liquid interface during the crystal growth. Uniformity of micro-resistivity of VB-GaAs substrate is much better than of the LEC-GaAs substrate, which is due to the low-dislocation-density of VB-GaAs single crystals.

The change of flow field and the effects of convective heat transfer on the shape and location of melt/crystal interface has been studied during the crystal growth by the heat exchanger method. Although the thermal structure is stable in the crucible, the flow due to the natural convection driven by radial temperature gradient is significant, because the thermal stability is broken by the hemispherical melt/crystal interface shape. The maximum interface deflection with convection is smaller than without and the convective heat transfer should be considered to simulate the heat transfer process of heat exchanger method rigorously.
This paper presents an atomization model for sprays under flash boiling conditions. The atomization is represented by the secondary breakup of a bubble/droplet system, and the breakup is considered as the results of two competing mechanisms, aerodynamic force and bubble growth. The model was applied to predict the atomization of a hollow-cone spray from pintle injector under flash boiling conditions. In the regimes this study considered, sprays are atomized by bubble growth, which produces smaller SMD#s than aerodynamic forces alone. With decreasing ambient pressures, the spray thickness, fuel vaporization rate and vapor radial penetration increases, and the drop size decreases. With increasing the fuel and ambient temperatures to some extent, the effect of flash boiling and air entrainment completely change the spray pattern.

Low-dislocation-density large-diameter GaAs single crystals with low-residual-strain have been strongly required. We have developed dislocation-free 3-inch Si-doped GaAs crystals for photonic devices [1], and low-dislocation-density low-residual-strain 4-inch to 6-inch [2, 3] semi-insulating GaAs crystals for electronic devices by Vertical Boat (VB) technique. We confirmed that VB substrates with low-residual-strain have higher resistance against slip-line generation during MBE process. VB-GaAs single crystals show uniform radial profile of resistivity reflecting to the flat solid-liquid interface during the crystal growth. Uniformity of micro-resistivity of VB-GaAs substrate is much better than that of the LEC-GaAs substrate, which is due to the low-dislocation-density of VB-GaAs single crystals.
The fungicidal effects of four commercial fungicides, two herbicides and two insecticides have been examined on Fusarium udum, causing wilt disease of pigeonpea in vitro and in vivo. The fungicides Bavistin and MeMc inhibited the growth of the test pathogen completely at 8 and 30 ppm. The herbicide Butachlore inhibited the growth of the test pathogen up to 80.4%. The insecticides, Ekalux and Thiodane partially inhibited the radial growth at 1000 ppm. In unsterilized and sterilized soil MeMc was most effective in controlling the disease in comparison to Bavistin and Ekalux. Maximum rhizosphere fungal population was recorded in MeMc amended soil and minimum in case of Bavistin.

Hertzian indentation tests with spherical indenters in water were conducted to examine the contact fatigue in three dental ceramics, such as feldspathic porcelain, micaceous glass-ceramic (MGC) and glass-infiltrated alumina, which was used as dental restorations, and evaluated the effect of contact damage on strength. Initial damage was dependent of microstructure, showing cone cracks of brittle behavior in the feldspathic porcelain and deformation of quasi-plastic behavior in the MGC, with an intermediate case in the glass-infiltrated alumina. However, as increasing the number of cyclic loading (n=1~n =$10^6$)all materials showed an abrupt strength degradation, at which fracture was originated from damage in the contact fatigue. There were two strength degradation with increasing the number of cyclic loading in specific loads (200N, 500N, 1000N):first was from the cone cracks, and second was from the radial cracks created by cyclic loading. The radial cracks, once formed, led to rapid degradation in strength properties, Finally the material was failed at the high number of cyclic loading. Strength degradation with indentation load at fixed number of cyclic loading indicated that the feldspathic porcelain should be highly damage tolerant to the contact fatigue.
Ring-width chronologies of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) from two experimental forest plots in Kaunas, Lithuania were developed to study tree growth-climate relationship in different geohydrological conditions using response function analysis. The tree ring-width chronologies of Scots pine ranged from 1883~1987 A.D. and 1864~1989 A.D., and Norway spruce 1838~1987 A.D. and 2870~1989 A.D., respectively. The response function analysis has vividly demonstrated that the growth of Scots pine is favoured by warm summer and Norway spruce by cool and moist summer. Spring temperature has shown direct relationship with tree growth of both the species. There also exists notable intraspecies analogies in growth responses except some minor differences.
