Effect of R-Z Relationships Derived from Disdrometer Data on Radar Rainfall Estimation during the Heavy Rain Event on 5 July 2005 (2005년 7월 5일 폭우 사례 시 우적계 R-Z 관계식이 레이더 강우 추정에 미치는 영향)

  • The R-Z relationship is one of important error factors to determine the accuracy of radar rainfall estimation. In this study, we have explored the effect of the R-Z relationships derived from disdrometer data in estimating the radar rainfall. The heavy rain event that produced flooding in St-Remi, Quebec, Canada has been occurred. We have tried to investigate the severity of rain for this event using high temporal (2.5 min) and spatial resolution ($1^{\circ}$ by 250 m) radar data obtained from the McGill S-band radar. Radar data revealed that the heavy rain cells pass directly over St-Remi while the coarse raingauge network was not sufficient to detect this rain event. The maximum 30 min (1 h) accumulation reaches about 39 (42) mm in St-Remi. During the rain event, the two disdrometers (POSS; Precipitation Occurrence Sensor System) were available: One used for the reflectivity calibration by comparing disdrometer Z and radar Z and the other for deriving disdrometric R-Z relationships. The result shows the significant improvement with the disdrometric reflectivity-dependent R-Z relationships against the climatological R-Z relationship. The bias in radar rain estimation is reduced from +12% to -2% and the root-mean squared error from 16 to 10% for daily accumulation. Using the estimated radar rainfall rate with disdrometric R-Z relationships, the flood event was well captured with proper timing and amount.

  • This paper presents the technology trend of various active safety systems for vehicle. The safety system is applied to various industry fields and is expected to be spread all over the market. So far, good examples of the developed active safety systems are ACC(Adaptive Cruise Control), CMS(Collision Mitigation Systems) and APSS(Active Pedestrian Safety Systems). And, a basic operation principle, system model and detection performance in a UWB radar for vehicle is investigated.

  • In this paper, a 24GHz FMCW radar system which measures the range and the relative velocity of a vehicle in close range is described. The intended ranging accuracy is 15cm and a possible system concept to achieve this objective is presented. The VCO nonlinearity correction method using a reference delay-line and the data extrapolation algorithms based on AR(autoregressive) model are applied. The implemented system shows relatively satisfactory results in ranging accuracy.

  • This paper is concerned with the vehicle platooning in the AHS (Automated Highway Systems). For this, a relative navigation system is developed for the vehicles operating as a platoon. The relative navigation system is based on two sensors including GPS and MMWR (Millimeter-Wave Radar) and the federated Kalman Iter processing measurements of them. The architecture of this system requires GPS measurements of a preceding vehicle via communication link. Even if GPS measurements are available, they contain errors which are unacceptably high in vehicle platooning. Therefore, GPS carrier phase is considered.   • In the face of the serious security situation with the increasing threat from North Korea, Korean Army is pursuing a reduction in troops through the performance improvement project of the GOP science-based border security system, which utilizes advanced technology. In order for the GOP science-based border security system to be an effective alternative to the decrease in military resources due to the population decline, it must guarantee a high detection and identification rate and minimize troop intervention by dramatically improving the false detection rate. Recently introduced in Korean Army, the GOP science-based border security system is known to ensure a relatively high detection and identification rate in good weather conditions, but its performance in harsh weather conditions such as rain and fog is somewhat lacking. As an alternative to overcoming this, a radar-based border security system that can detect objects even in bad weather has been proposed. This paper proves the effectiveness of the AI-based scientific border security system based on radar that is being currently tested at the 00th Division through the 2021 Rapid Acquisition Program, and suggests the direction of development for the GOP scientific border security system.

  • Cross eye technique was proposed as an angle deception jamming technique against monopulse radars. Tracking radars use monopulse or conical scan methods for angle estimation of a target. Thus, if we verify deception performance of cross eye technique against a conical scan radar, efficient jamming systems can be developed to disturb both monopulse radars and conical scan radars. In this paper, we propose a mathematical model for a conical scan radar and a cross eye system. Using the proposed model, angular deception performance of the cross eye technique against conical scan radar is analyzed.

  • Through-wall ultra-wide band (UWB) radar has been considered as one of the preferred and non-contact technologies for the targets detection owing to the better time resolution and stronger penetration. The high time resolution is a result of a larger of bandwidth of the employed UWB pulses from the radar system, which is a useful tool to separate multiple targets in complex environment. The article emphasised on human subject localization and detection. Human subject usually can be detected via extracting the weak respiratory signals of human subjects remotely. Meanwhile, the range between the detection object and radar is also acquired from the 2D range-frequency matrix. However, it is a challenging task to extract human respiratory signals owing to the low signal to clutter ratio. To improve the feasibility of human respiratory signals detection, a new method is developed via analysing the standard deviation based kurtosis of the collected pulses, which are modulated by human respiratory movements in slow time. The range between radar and the detection target is estimated using joint time-frequency analysis (JTFA) of the analysed characteristics, which provides a novel preliminary signature for life detection. The breathing rates are obtained using the proposed accumulation method in time and frequency domain, respectively. The proposed method is validated and proved numerically and experimentally.

  • With the expansion of the shipping and port logistics industry in the 21st century, the traffic density is continuously increased because of the increase in volumes of world sea freight and fleets, as well as the increase in the causes of potential marine accidents, such as ship collisions and stranding. Accordingly, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has requested that the installation and operation of VTS should be applied in areas with high risk of marine traffic, and the request should be included as one of the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulations. In this paper, the fundamental requirements of the radar system for vessel traffic services were analyzed and the analyzing factors were based on the IALA guideline.s This paper also includes results for the requirement and recommendation analysis on detection distance, target separation, and the target position accuracy of X-band radar. Also, to check if it satisfies the requirement of detection distance, range and azimuth separation of small point targets, and target position accuracy from the IALA guidelines, the test was conducted through the radar image acquired at the VTS center, and hence, the validity of the technical performance requirements was confirmed.

  • The multibeam surveillance radar is a state-of art of 3D radar technology. It applies the stacked beam-on-received realized by a digital beamformer. In this paper, a design concept of beamformer and a method of target altitude extraction for multibeam surveillance radar in the normal environmental condition considering no multipath situations are proposed and investigated. The extraction algorithm based on antenna sine space coordinated system in a FFT digital beamformer is described. The proposed algorithm is simulated by 1 look-up table data and confirmed to have consistent results in accordance with a variety of target altitudes and a full radar frequency range.

  • In this paper, a feasibility on a ground-penetrating radar for detecting subsurface cavities near buried pipes has been investigated. The experimental setup was implemented by employing an impulse ground-penetrating radar system, a xy Cartesian coordinate robot, an underground material filled tank, a metal pipe and a simulated cavity model. In particular, the simulated cavity model was constructed by packing Styrofoam chips and balls, which have both similar electrical properties to an air-filled cavity and a solid shape. Through typical three experiments, B-scan data of the radar have been acquired and displayed as 2-D gray-scale images. According to the comparison of B-scan images, we show that the subsurface cavities near the buried pipes can be detected by using the radar survey.
