  • Abroad warships are confronted with various menaces. The most critical threat of the warship is an Anti-Ship Missile (ASM). The ASM is able to be launched at a variety of environments and platforms. The ASM can evades conventional naval radar systems and electronic countermeasure techniques for providing a fatal damage to the warship. To cope with the ASM, an active decoy is an effective method to minimize the direct damage to the warship. The active decoy increases survivability of the warship because the ASM can lure pursuit of the active decoy instead of the warship. In this paper, our proposed method verifies an available response time of the active decoy to deal with the ASM using the active decoy of the warship in marine environments. We defined models of the warship, the ASM, and the active decoy, and executed simulation by combining the models. By the simulation result, the proposed method demonstrated the superiority of the mobile active decoy of the response time decoy among various active decoys, and estimated a protection area to prevent the ASM according the response time of the mobile active decoy against the ASM.

  • Continuous monitoring and immediate response is essential to protect the national maritime territory and maritime resources from the activities of illegal ships. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images with a wide range of images are effective for maritime surveillance asthe weather and day-night conditions rarely affect to image acquisition. However, an effective ship detection is not easy due to the huge data size of SAR images and various characteristics such as the speckle noise. In this study, the Human Visual Attention System (HVAS) algorithm was applied to KOMPSAT-5 to extract the initial targets, and the SAR-Split algorithm depending on the imaging modes was used to remove false alarms. The detected targets were finally selected by the Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) algorithm and matched with the ship's Automatic Identification System (AIS) information. Overall, the detected targets were well matched with AIS data, but some false alarms by ship wakes were observed. The detection rate was about 80% in ES mode and about 64% in ST mode. It is expected that the developed ship detection algorithm will contribute to the construction of a wide area maritime surveillance network.

  • According to IMO, MASS is defined as a vessel operated at various levels independent of human interference. The safety navigation support service for MASS is designed to improve the safety and efficiency of MASS by developing public services on shore for ship arrivals/departures and for cargo handling. The safety navigation support service consists of a total of six types of services: autonomous operation, berthing/unberthing/mooring, cargo handling and ship arrival/departure service, PSC inspection, condition monitoring, and accident response support services. In order to support accident response service, the relative importance of a bridge navigational equipment was assessed by stratifying the navigation system to provide safe and efficient support services by objective judgment through specific and quantitative methods using AHP, one of decision-making methods used by an expert group. The survey was conducted by dividing the bridge navigational equipment into depth, location, and speed information. As a result of applying the AHP method, the importance of depth, location, and speed information was assessed. The relative importance of each equipment for providing location information was also assessed in order of Radar, DGPS, ECDIS, Gyro compass, Autopilot, and AIS. This was similar to survey results on the utilization of each operator's preference and its impact on marine accidents.

  • Ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were conducted in a sand tank model in a laboratory and at an alluvial field site to detect the groundwater table and to investigate the influence of saturation on GPR response in the unsaturated zone. In the sand tank model, the groundwater table and saturation in the sand layer were altered by injecting water, which was then drained by a valve inserted into the bottom of the tank. GPR vertical reflection profile (VRP) data were obtained in the sand tank model for rising and lowering of the groundwater table to estimate the groundwater table and saturation. Results of the lab-scale model provide information on the sensitivity of GPR signals to changes in the water content and in the groundwater table. GPR wave velocities in the vadose zone are controlled mainly by variations in water content (increased travel time is interpreted as an increase in saturation). At the field site, VRP data were collected to a depth of 220 m to estimate the groundwater table at an alluvial site near the Nakdong river at Iryong-ri, Haman-gun, South Korea. Results of the field survey indicate that under saturated conditions, the first reflector of the GPR is indicative of the capillary fringe and not the actual groundwater table. To measure the groundwater table more accurately, we performed a GPR survey using the common mid-point (CMP) method in the vicinity of well-3, and sunk a well to check the groundwater table. The resultant CMP data revealed reflective events from the capillary fringe and groundwater table showing hyperbolic patterns. The normal moveout correction was applied to evaluate the velocity of the GPR, which improved the accuracy of saturation and groundwater table information at depth. The GPR results show that the saturation information, including the groundwater table, is useful in assessing the hydrogeologic properties of the vadose zone in the field.

  • The tracking filter plays a key role in the accurate estimation and prediction of maneuvering a vessel's position and velocity when attempting to enhance safety by avoiding collision. Therefore, in order to achieve accurate estimation and prediction, many oceangoing vessels are equipped with the Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA) system. However, the accuracy of prediction depends on the tracking filter's ability to reduce noise and maintain a stable transient response. The purpose of this paper is to derive the optimal values of the gain parameters used in tracking a High Dynamic Warship. The algorithm employs a ${\alpha}-{\beta}-{\gamma}$ filter to provide accurate estimates and updates of the state variables, that is, positions, velocity and acceleration of the high dynamic warship based on previously observed values. In this study, the filtering coefficients ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$ and ${\gamma}$ are determined from set values of the damping parameter, ${\xi}$. Optimization of the damping parameter, ${\xi}$, is achieved experimentally by plotting the residual error against different values of the damping parameter to determine the least value of the damping parameter that results in the optimum smoothing coefficients leading to a reduction in the noise corruption effect. Further investigation of the performance of the filter indicates that optimal smoothing coefficients depend on the initial and average velocity of the target.

  • The cavity behind the tunnel lining, caused by overbrake, might be cause a severe instability during tunnel construction. So backfill grouting is essentially required. GPR(Ground penetrating Radar) is widely used to identify the position and size of the cavity and to verify the effect of the backfill grouting. In this study, GPR survey with 450 MHz antenna was implied to access the effect of the backfill grouting before and after the work to the crown part of ○○ tunnel in Seoul respectively. The result of GPR survey conducted before the backfill, was revealed that cavities behind the lining were existed in the areas of 8 spans. Finally, from the GPR survey implied after backfilling, it was turned out that backfill grouting was successfully carried out. Also, GPR survey was ascertained the better contact between lining and rock base at arrangement of bar span.

  • The performance of a landmine detection system depends on consistent extractions of the features of landmines. Since landmines have diverse sizes, it is critical to select an appropriate window size to represent the landmine region consistently. Conventional detection systems are incapable of extracting consistent landmine features because they employ fixed window sizes. This paper proposes a window size selection method according to the size of a landmine. The proposed method selects an appropriate window size based on the type of a landmine estimated from the response signal of the system. Data on various types of soils and landmines were generated from a simulation program to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The results verified that the proposed method, which employs an adaptive window size, yields a better landmine detection rate than the conventional methods, which employ fixed window sizes.

  • To develop and evaluate the real-time SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) motion measurement system, true antenna phase center(APC) positions during SAT(Synthetic Aperture Time) are needed. In this paper, CDGPS(Carrier phase Differential Global Positioning System) post processing method is proposed to get the true APC position for spotlight SAR image formation. The CDGPS position is smoothed to remove high frequency noise which exists inherently in the carrier phase measurement. This paper shows smoothed CDGPS data is enough to provide the true APC for high-quality SAR image formation through motion measurement result, phase error estimation and IRF(Impulse Response Function) analysis.

  • It has been known that the DCMP(Directionally Constrained Minimization of Power) and the ZF(Zero Forcing) can improve the SINR performance of an array antenna system by using spatial signature of wireless channel. This paper analyzes the performance of DCMP and ZF in multiple scattering environments. To obtain the spatial signature of wireless channel. both DOA(Directional of Arrival) and AS(Angular spread) of the received signals were estimated by using ESPRIT. The performance of the DCMP and the ZF was analyzed theoretically. By computer simulation of SINR performance was evaluated.

  • In this paper, we present design, implementation and test results of CTM (Chirp Transceiver Module) EM (Engineering Model) for C-Band SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) Payload. The CTM is designed to operate dual frequency scan method that simultaneously operate two frequencies in each 50MHz bandwidth to achieve 120Km swath with 10m resolution at about 500Km altitude. The CTM used radiation tolerant RTG4 FPGA for space environment, and implemented with the Parallel DDS (PDDS) method which uses a small memory capacity compared to the memory-map method. Test results show high purity chirp signal generation and excellent IRF performance from received chirp signal after direct digital conversion.
